Originally didn't know it was a food shop til i walked in. But i was hungry so, i ordered a classic cheeseburger. Honestly wasn't expecting the burger to be that good. Being able to also write on the walls make s the experience so much better. Best burgers in Sydney hands down!!! The place looked super dingy and I had difficulty finding it until I saw the pictures on google. I'm excited that I did try to visit!! Food is amazing. The bar downstairs is self service and you can order At the bar. For table service head up the staircase at the back and someone will bring you to a table. The menu is on the walls. Please get the Mary's burger and add the trashcan bacon. The best combination ever. Juicy patty with amazing oozy cheese intertwined in it. The bun is great and the vegetables are fresh and refreshing. The fries are like frozen ones but quite nice for the ones who are kind of soggy. My husband tried the half bird - the fried chicken was rather juicy and had a nicely fried batter. The flavor of the batter could be better though. I really enjoyed the hipster vibe and loved the food. The volume wasn't too loud for me at 7 in the evening. Definitely can't wait to visit again! read more

Good ol' fashioned fast food ticking all the boxes! Soft, squishy, buttery bun... Perfectly pink pattie... My tastebuds were awakened as I took that first bite. So the rumors were true. There is something about Mary. It's just a order & go establishment & we waited a while for our order in the non-existent queue so not a quick fast food joint but if you have time order the meal & wet your appetite with the malty chocolate thick shake... Well, you walk in to a bit more than a hole in the wall burger joint. Why no I guess? Everyone seems to be raving about the Mary's in Newtown. To start off the sass with the girl taking orders, rolling eyes, one word answers, that usually won't stop me from trying something so we ordered. 1 $10 cheese burger, 1 chicken burger, some fries and a drink. When my burger was ready I grabbed it and tried to give my ticket (with my order number on it) to the girl behind the counter to which she gave me a dirty look and said "uh.. there are bins out side". That was a bit rude but fine, we were all dressed nice and none of us were hipsters so maybe that was why she gave us all the attitude. I'll just comment on my burger, very sloppy, small, and oily (see my pics I uploaded). the patty was raw in the middle and I didn't feel so good afterward. I think for me the whole experience was bad. Maybe if the burger was worth it I would go back but unfortunately that wasn't the case. It's finally here! Mary's in Newtown, creators of the best damn burger in Sydney has finally opened doors to their CBD takeaway shop. I repeat, it's a takeaway only shop and quality has not been compromised! You enter from the right door, exit on the left door. There's no fried chicken here except for a fried chicken burger which is essentially the same as a Mary's burger but with a fried chicken patty. You can still get a cheeseburger or veggie burger. Burger's start at $10, and you can get a meal combo (fries and a soda) for $15, or with fries and a shake for $17. For a double you tack on $3, and the same goes for bacon. Free refills too and you can ask for Mary's Sauce for dipping!!! Looks like they're open for breakfast as well at 7am and have a breakfast burger where you can also get a hash brown, will have to try this at some point. Mary's of Sydney has gotten everything - a quirky location - a funky menu - awesome illustrations - walls where people can draw their inspirations - cool packaging Only thing it's missing is a winning taste in my opinion. I wasn't in love with the burger I got to say. I was really excited about trying this place for months but just felt it was a burger that could have been served at a regular fast food chain. The burger took about 10 minutes to come out so was expecting a lot and it was just good. The burger I chose was the Mary Burger which was bun with beef patty, onions, lettuce and special Mary's sauce. The sauce was good but just felt if it was handed to me randomly I would just as easily think it came from Macca's or somewhere like that. They offer thick shakes also which sound really good so may have to try them sometime. The menu isn't that cheap considering you have to eat it on the street as the place is just a hole in the wall. Burger was $10 and to make it a meal brought it to $19 I think. Would rather spend that towards a sit down meal some place else. Could be one of those meals that tastes super super amazing after a few drinks . read more

I finally tried this after all the hype from my brother-in-law and I must say I think I came in with high expectations. It really wasn't a big deal, nothing special I reckon. The lady serving me recommended the Mary's burger saying it was the most popular. And for $15 for a chips and drink combo I think it's a bit rich for a beef patty, tomatoes, lettuce and special sauce. The only plus was the quick service and friendly staff. read more

I love the Newtown version but I dislike this joint. Hardly anywhere to sit, a long wait on the bustling street, while inane music is pumped into your bleeding ears. Meh. Average run of the mill burger. The burger patty was under cooked and roughly the same size of a MC Donald's burger. The toppings were fresh. The bun was tasty. I got the Mary's Burger which had "Mary's Sauce" on it.... Which was basically non-existent so I couldn't tell you if it was amazing. The Milkshake was pretty awesome though. Nice and thick! The decor is actually really great. I like the style of the restaurant and the service was good even though it took quite sometime for the burger itself. On offer are their renowned Mary's burger, an (anything but) standard cheeseburger, a vegetarian option for the ladies* & a chicken burger. My pick is the chicken burger, a deep fried chunk of calorific deliciousness. Thigh not breast, spicy, juicy, crispy, nom! The only thing that could improve it would be the addition bacon. Which they offer. Get the bacon. I went here on a recommendation. But was a bit disappointed with the burgers I received. I ordered the Mary's burger with fries and the drink and the person who I ate with order the cheeseburger with the drink and fries. I found the burger very greasy, especially the bun its self. I do understand that a good burger is meant to be a bit greasy but the inside of my mouth was if I ate a tub of butter. The person who I ate with also found there cheeseburger below par as well. A friend took us to this tiny burger store, which he thinks the burgers here are good. Well, I agree actually, it's good. But I'm not amazed, honestly speaking. We order Mary's burger and Chicken burger, and the sizes, well, smaller than what we expected. We order meals for each burger and they costed 40 dollars in total, which I think it a little bit expensive. In addition, no seats in this store, it means that you must take the burgers with you and find somewhere else to finish them. I guess I was disappointed after the incredible hype for this place. I found that it was pretty overrated as the burgers tasted basically like "expensive maccas". It's really heavy on the oil, which makes it 10x more guilty when eating it - perhaps it's great for a hangover though! read more

I tried Mary's last week and was most suitably impressed. I haven't been to Mary's in Newtown, but my fellow dining companions informed me the burgers (and naturally the price) were slightly bigger at the flagship store. Not a problem. I had a Mary Burger, and it was the tastiest burger I'd had in a while. It was a little small for me, and only after I'd consumed the burger was I advised by my burger compatriots that I could have "doubled up". Got a Mary's burger for lunch. One word: greasy! The bun was so greasy it was wet. There was hardly any cheese, i only saw melted bits around the corners, and WAY too much sauce! You can get better burgers elsewhere in the city for under $12. (You might even be able to find a seat to have your meal). 2 stars cos the fries were good. Put quite simply, the burgers at Mary's is freaken awesome. So far, I've had the mary's burger, the cheeseburger and the chicken burger (sorry, the carnivore in me just cannot bring myself to try the vegetarian burger). All the burgers are fantastic. I even tried the double (two patties!), and it's double the joy. My most recent burger was the chicken and beef. That's essentially the chicken burger plus a beef patty. Pure awesomeness (though, a fair amount of grease as well - so be warned!). I'll admit that not everything at Mary's is that good. You can get better french fries from maccas and the thickshakes are just a tad too sweet for me. But with burgers as fantastic as these, do you really need anything else? Pretty sure the feud between Chur burger fans & Marys fans dates back to before the Montagues first threw some shade at the Capulets. Just about everyone who's raved about Marys to me has likened it to a good, high quality, McDonalds meal. I really can't add much to that incredibly accurate description. Its delicious, and the style is either your thing or its not. Marys also does a really good fried chicken burger, but, curse of the home cook, so do I. I'm pretty annoyed about my visit to Mary's today. In the first couple of weeks some workmates and I visited and I ordered a burger without the bun. It was pretty delicious and I looked forward to returning for a second burger. I wandered over today and ordered the same as last time, and was advised that they didn't do it anymore. I made sure to be clear - can they just put the pattie / cheese / toppings and so on in the wrapping and they declined. I'll just talk about my experience, and the food. Oh yes, the food. Came here, lined up, paid, enjoyed the soundtrack and wrote something on the wall while I waited. I got the fried chicken burger as a combo. The burger was as awesome as ever. I don't think I could eat other fried chicken burgers now - I've just been spoiled. The bun was nice and soft too, perfect for the heaving mass of chicken, cheese and sauces in between. The chips were fine too, definitely some of the better chips I've had of late. I ordered the shake flavour of the day - maple syrup and chilli. Man, did that concoction ever tingle the tastebuds. I liked it so much I'd considered going back for a second, but I wanted to be able to not fall over from overeating. The only caveat I'd had this time was that they didn't mention the special burger they had going on for the week, nor did I see it mentioned on the walls, maybe I didn't look hard enough. I had the Mary's burger. At $10 I feel it was overpriced. It's not a big burger. It tasted ok, I think the special sauce and onions helped. Looks like nothing special, it was thrown together like anything from McD/HJ etc. The meat patty was cooked medium rare, which is not necessarily a bad thing but not to everyone's taste. The staff are not particularly friendly but it is just a takeaway joint. I don't think I'll be rushing back. Overall it doesn't live up to the hype. More style over substance. read more
