I love the barbecue sandwiches from Bunn's!

The best chopped barbecue I've ever had!! I'm from NY and every time I come to North Carolina I have to stop here for a sandwich. You can sit in for a quick bite or order takeout. The staff is always, always so pleasant. I'll probably stop back in before I go back home ! Lol Ps-It's not fancy. You come here for the awesome food, not the ambiance. It's a vintage Gem. Also, no credit cards accepted Just cash. Enjoy!

I have eaten at this iconic, beyond retro, barbecue joint a number of times over the years - usually as a slight detour on the way to the OBX. I always enjoyed the pig here, but it had been almost 8 years since my last visit, so I didn't feel comfortable reviewing it. Now I do. This place still serves very, very good Eastern NC style barbecue, not the "World's Best" as stated on the front of their building, but very, very good (easily in my Top 15, maybe even Top 10), and it is very reasonably priced. They cook just pork shoulders here so the meat is leaner and cleaner than some you find in Eastern NC. It is moderately chopped, tender & moist, and is rather mild as it comes out of the kitchen, but with a definite vinegar snap to it - a good dose of the house sauce (which has some heat) and a little salt, rounds this pig out for me. The Cornbread Sandwich ($3.50 for BBQ between 2 pieces of cornbread) is the unique item here, but much like the famous Pork Chop Sandwich at Snappy Lunch, once is about enough. The cornbread is thin and rather chewy, much like that at Skylight Inn, and overpowers the taste of some pretty good barbecue - the cornbread just isn't that good, imo. The Barbecue Plate ($6 for Regular, only $6.75 for Large) comes with slaw and a piece of cornbread. The slaw is a little different from that served at most Eastern NC BBQ - the cabbage is shredded, not chopped, has a little carrot and some celery seeds, very little mayo, and is on the sweet side - if you get a sandwich (goes for $2.75), I'd leave the slaw off. The Hot Dog here is outstanding and is only $1.25 - I'd stop here just for the dog. The BBQ by the pound is $6.25 cold, $7 if you want it hot. Like I said, great value here. The menu is very compact here - they offer a very good Brunswick Stew ($4.50 for a bowl), BBQ Chicken on Tuesday, and absolutely outstanding Chicken & Pastry on Thursday. This is a small place, with limited seating (maybe 6 or 8 small tables), most here seem to order takeout. The folks are very personable and friendly - one of the owners was kind enough to take a picture of my wife and me out in front of the place. You need to try the food here, and bring cash - no CC accepted here.

Not open and we drove 15 minutes out of our way. Closed and website and sign wrong! Not up to date for information on yelp site either!

I had high hopes. BBQ was decent, Brunswick stew was good, cornbread and slaw were below average.

Kim, our very delightful and great waitress told us they have them on the weekends. So, we will definitely have to come back on a weekend. We loved the atmosphere, saw other repeat customers and got to know several of the friendly, on-the-ball servers. The buffet food offered country-cooking foods with a variety of selections.  We liked the atmosphere and food so much that we drove about 2 hours round trip to just eat at The Hitchin Post. We took a break for several months then recently returned to learn that there was a new owner. We didn't recognize any of the staff. We were told by our server that the owners were making some positive changes. OK, we thought, we will give it a chance.   Today we arrived on Sunday again and we were so disappointed. First off, the music was blaring (saying a lot coming from a person with a hearing loss!) with pop music which is disconcerting in a western-themed, country restaurant. We nicely mentioned the loud music to our server but nothing was done.  And, no I am not some ornery codger who hates contemporary music.  But who the heck wants their eardrums punctured early on Sunday morning?  The Hitchin Post is usually busy on Sundays at this time, but there were few customers today. I would not be surprised if other regulars are unhappy also.  The fried chicken, cornbread, rolls are still good. Overall, the food quality has also gone downhill - definitely not enough vegetable choices.   Plus, no one should ever mix butterbeans and corn together.  My gosh, the cake slices are so small, close to paper-thin and not tasty to boot. Sadly, we won't be returning. I hope the new owners can turn this around before they lose more regulars.

My sub was definitely on the sparse side. The 6ish inch sandwich arrived at the table warm on a small metal tray. The serving of salami was skimpy; I seriously doubt that it had much more than an ounce of salami and about the same size serving of mozzarella. Despite the modest amount of protein, it really was OK. I've had better versions of this sandwich, but I've had worse too. The baked ziti showed up piping hot in an enormous baking dish that dwarfed the metal tray of my sandwich. It was easily a large enough serving for two or possibly even three. I got to try a bite and it was also OK. There was a lot of pasta with a barely adequate serving of meat sauce and there was a lot more tomato sauce than meat in the sauce. The sauce was definitely on the sweet side; I've had baked ziti many times and do not recall ever eating sauce this sweet before. Our server was not overly attentive but did eventually refill our drinks. The restaurant is clean and had a bit of a 1990s feel. We both noticed that there was pay telephone in the lobby that appeared to work. It definitely reinforced the 1990s vibe. The restaurant charges a 4% fee to use a credit card. There really aren't too many dining options easily accessible off of highway 64 east of Rocky Mount until you reach the OBX. Momma's Pizza is a reasonable choice as long you have modest expectations.

It's a normal wait for the meals. As I mentioned in a previous review, the decor doesn't give the customer an "nice Italian dining" vibe. The pasta dishes are a good portion and has the flavor of standard Americanized Italian fare. That's not a negative opinion of the food, just a little info for the potential customer anticipating a gourmet Italian meal. My only serious ding would be the decor, tables, and seating are in dire need of replacement or renovation.
