Not open and we drove 15 minutes out of our way. Closed and website and sign wrong! Not up to date for information on yelp site either!

A MUST stop when driving through Windsor. OMFG, the cornbread is ground breaking. Two people can eat the best BBQ sandwich of their lives with sodas for a tad over $10. The staff are so sweet and wonderful. read more

The best chopped barbecue I've ever had!! I'm from NY and every time I come to North Carolina I have to stop here for a sandwich. You can sit in for a quick bite or order takeout. The staff is always, always so pleasant. I'll probably stop back in before I go back home ! Lol Ps-It's not fancy. You come here for the awesome food, not the ambiance. It's a vintage Gem. Also, no credit cards accepted Just cash. Enjoy! read more

Bunn's Barbecue - I love the barbecue sandwiches from Bunn's! - Barbeque Near Me - Windsor, North Carolina

I have eaten at this iconic, beyond retro, barbecue joint a number of times over the years - usually as a slight detour on the way to the OBX. I always enjoyed the pig here, but it had been almost 8 years since my last visit, so I didn't feel comfortable reviewing it. Now I do. This place still serves very, very good Eastern NC style barbecue, not the "World's Best" as stated on the front of their building, but very, very good (easily in my Top 15, maybe even Top 10), and it is very reasonably priced. They cook just pork shoulders here so the meat is leaner and cleaner than some you find in Eastern NC. It is moderately chopped, tender & moist, and is rather mild as it comes out of the kitchen, but with a definite vinegar snap to it - a good dose of the house sauce (which has some heat) and a little salt, rounds this pig out for me. The Cornbread Sandwich ($3.50 for BBQ between 2 pieces of cornbread) is the unique item here, but much like the famous Pork Chop Sandwich at Snappy Lunch, once is about enough. The cornbread is thin and rather chewy, much like that at Skylight Inn, and overpowers the taste of some pretty good barbecue - the cornbread just isn't that good, imo. The Barbecue Plate ($6 for Regular, only $6.75 for Large) comes with slaw and a piece of cornbread. The slaw is a little different from that served at most Eastern NC BBQ - the cabbage is shredded, not chopped, has a little carrot and some celery seeds, very little mayo, and is on the sweet side - if you get a sandwich (goes for $2.75), I'd leave the slaw off. The Hot Dog here is outstanding and is only $1.25 - I'd stop here just for the dog. The BBQ by the pound is $6.25 cold, $7 if you want it hot. Like I said, great value here. The menu is very compact here - they offer a very good Brunswick Stew ($4.50 for a bowl), BBQ Chicken on Tuesday, and absolutely outstanding Chicken & Pastry on Thursday. This is a small place, with limited seating (maybe 6 or 8 small tables), most here seem to order takeout. The folks are very personable and friendly - one of the owners was kind enough to take a picture of my wife and me out in front of the place. You need to try the food here, and bring cash - no CC accepted here. read more

My reputation amongst my friends is that I will travel 100 miles for a good BBQ sandwich and this past Wednesday was another trip. Friends who live near Windsor NC strongly suggested that I give Bunn's BBQ a try. Being I was returning from a ceremony in Rocky Mount NC, I felt no time like the present to try Bunn's BBQ. I arrived shortly after noon and there were quite a few trucks and cars in the parking lot (usually a good sign). Upon entering Bunn's I was greeted by a young man who assisted me with the ordering process. One goes into another small room where you place your order. The menu is simple but do not let the simplicity of the menu cause you to walk away without trying the BBQ. I decided on a Bbq sandwich, with slaw , and a bowl of Brunswick stew. There are several places to sit and enjoy the meal. I selected the seating area where you sit on a bench and enjoy the meal at a clean counter. Several employees came into the eating area and asked if my meal was ok and did I need anything. The service was great especially for a small BBQ Restaraunt. The BBQ.had an outstanding smoked flavor and was chopped as I would expect from a good Eastern NC BBQ restaurant. For me personally, the cole slaw was a little to coarsely grated, but again it is just my opinion. The Brunswick stew was hot and for me very good. The flavor was good with a good mix of vegetables. My one complaint would be that the stew did not have enough meat in it. One of the servers told me that on Tuesdays they also serve BBQ chicken and on Thursdays they serve chicken and pastry (some call this chicken pot pie). This is a pleasant surprise for s small NC BBQ Restaurant along with the BBQ. I have added Bunn's to one of my favorite Eastern BBQ places and will definitely travel to it again. read more

Awesome BBQ!!!! I know what BBQ should taste like. I have eaten BBQ all over NC. You come here for the food. Not the atmosphere. Good size portions. Great service and price. read more

Everytime I go to Edenton to visit my family I make sure to go to Bunns at least 2 times. I love Eastern Carolina BBQ. A great big helping of Chopped pork on a bun covered in home made slaw and Texas Pete! My mouth is watering right now just thinking about it! Hope to see you soon Bunns. read more

A little confusing when you first enter, but the dining room is through the back and around to the right. Things were slow so we just kind of ordered as we walked past the waitstaff to sit down. No frills....barbecue, slaw...barbecue chicken once a week on Tuesday I believe and chicken pastry on Thursday. The slaw was great, not creamy and heavy on the vinegar. The barbecue was very flavorful and didn't even need the vinegar barbecue sauce, although I doused mine anyway. The old fashioned cornbread is a total throwback. It's not my favorite style of cornbread but my family loves it and you don't see it much anymore. read more

Usually go for hole in the wall type places but this one was bad all around. The chopped bbq was very good and I get the hype on the reviews about it but its slightly above average at best for the NC area. The rest of the food is terrible, slaw was gross and cornbread was cardboard pretending to be bread. Customer service was also awful. Cant find the menu anywhere unless you walk in. Which is weird because they encourage call in orders and drive thru orders. If you go through the drive thru you catch fresh attitude if you dont know what you want, which is weird because you havent even looked at the menu because it doesnt exist outside of the 1970s lightup board inside the restaurant. People who havent left windsor, please do so you can experience real bbq at an establishment thats operating in this century. read more

I had been working in the area and a local resident suggested I try Bunn's if I like BBQ..... Driving up to the former gas station / old time general store, with a grill in the back, it was not what I would call an impressing sight.... But I've found that some of the best places aren't..... In the back room I sat down at an old, well used, but clean counter and and ordered a bbq sandwich from the incredibly friendly waitress..... The service was quick.... and wonderful.... better than I've had in some high end restaurants.... The other folks at the counter were friendly and genuinely interested in striking up a conversation. The BBQ was great.... smokey, with an eastern NC vinegar sauce.... the bun was fresh and the slaw was excellent ..... I'm looking forward to getting back to this part of NC to go to Bunn's again! read more

We love off the beaten path eatin places. Being from southeastern North Carolina we always appreciate good barbecue. This place exceeded our expectations. While it might be in a 1950ish gas station it was clean and the people are extremely friendly. If you make the trip, bring cash and I recommend the cornbread bbq sandwich. We will go back anytime we are in the area. read more

First time here a really great piece of Americana. 81 years in business that alone says a lot ! The BBQ was great and I really enjoyed the pickled slaw. A must see and enjoy when in the area read more

By far one of the best pork BBQ places in the east. Always fresh and delicious. Try the homemade Brunswick Stew and don't forget the cornbread. I always ask for the corner piece. By the way, they only accept cash. read more

Best NC BBQ I've had in a long time! I had the large plate and a sweet tea. So delicious, very moist and the sauce had just the right tang. Cole slaw was on point and the sweet tea washed it all down just right!! read more

This East Carolina BBQ shrine has been in business for many years and 40 under the same family's ownership. It is a simple place in an old service station in a tiny town, but if you want good well smoked lean BBQ this is your place. They make their own sauce and sell it separate or put it on your order. Also please remember they close at 5:00 read more

I had high hopes. BBQ was decent, Brunswick stew was good, cornbread and slaw were below average.

Found this gem driving from Raleigh to Norfolk and couldn't have been more pleased! THIS is how BBQ should be - served on a paper plate in an old gas station. I had the small pork plate that came with a good serving of BBQ and coleslaw and wonderful cornbread (not sure how they fix it but it was dense and crispy) I would recommend anyone driving thru to take the 5 minutes off the highway and try it out read more

This is great food!! Love running in and getting a barbeque sandwich or cornbread sandwich. Also the Brunswick stew is amazing. Great small town feel! read more

Great staff Janice and Karen. Barbecue chicken is the best , I wish that they had it every week.

Wife and I disagree here: she says it's good, i say it is the best in Eastern N.C. Slaw is old-timey rough chop authentic, barbecue also old skool. Brunswick stew is perfect, and the flat, sheet cornbread is legendary. Atmosphere is 1950s. Go and eat here. One of a kind. read more

We almost didn't go in when we arrived as no other cars there but decided to take a chance and as soon as we went inside a stream of customers began arriving. The outside looks like an old gas station. We were so glad we went it. The owner and employees were extremely friendly and helpful. The food was outstanding. We had the special of the day which was BBQ chicken. The owner brought us a sample of their pork BBQ which was also delicious. Rustic, informal atmosphere with paper plates which is fine with us. Will definitely go again. Friendliest people we have encountered in a restaurant anywhere. Also found it amazing that these people had just recovered from a 5 ft flood from storm Matthew. The owner said thanks to family, friends, church they were able to get the place recovered and ready for business in a little over 30 days. read more

Bunn's Barbecue is the best anywhere I've been. The staff is super friendly. The Barbecue is always hot and mouth watering good. Soon as I walk out the door of Bunn's Barbecue I start to miss it pretty badly and can't wait till I am in the area again though I only live in the nearest by County, The only time I am able to visit Bunn's is when I'm working in the Windsor area and when my work partner ask me where do I want to go for lunch I always say Bunn's Barbecue without thinking twice. I wish so badly that we could eat there every single time but because my work partner is the boss man I try my best not to say Bunn's Barbecue all the time though I so badly want to. read more
