Other than the prices and Wilber Shirley's absence, it really hadn't changed much in the past 20 years. The decor is "1960s eastern NC BBQ restaurant", which adds to the appeal. Service was friendly and attentive. Our drinks never went empty during our meal. The owner also stopped by to check on us as well. Our server brought us a small basket of hushpuppies, clearly just out of the fryer. While hot, the recipe had not changed over the years and were just as bland as always. Accompanying the hushpuppies was a small serving of some sort of sauce; it didn't had much flavor but I think it was supposed to be butter or at least buttery. My dining companion got the quarter-rack rib special. The ribs were meaty, very flavorful, and tender. They were good enough that the accompanying barbecue sauce really detracted from the ribs. The potato salad was as good as ever. The serving included 4 ribs for $12.50, which I thought was a very good value. I had my standard, the Pork Plate with slaw and potato salad. The serving of chopped pork was generous, but was too dry and over seasoned for my taste. The slaw was fine but unexceptional. The $12.56 price on the menu was a reasonable value, however after we paid we found out that we were charged $13.50. It turns out that the printed menus Wilber's provides in the restaurant don't reflect their latest prices on Toast. Our server did not mention anything about price discrepancies. The difference in prices doesn't seem like they are just rolling in the sales tax to the orders either. This is absolutely unacceptable and reflects a huge failure in judgement by the management and owner. Shame on you. All in all, our experience rates a four-star review. However, when taking the price discrepancies into account, Wilber's earns a 3-star review and that is generous. Restaurants need to accurately advertise their prices to their Customers, whether dining in or getting take out.

Maybe they should rename it "slay," cause it does and it's the only slaw I like! I got the brisket on the baked potato with bacon, cheese, butter and sour cream. No green onion cause onions are gross. It was DELICIOUS! Would definitely order it again. Staff was on point as usual. Special shoutout and props to Jason...he is always kind and gracious to my mom, and that is ALWAYS a win in my book! It's always a bit noisy, and I loathe the chairs at the tables (they scream be uncomfortable, eat and get out), and altho I wish they'd improve it, the awful chairs shall not separate us from excellent BBQ...and brisket. Don't you dare forget the brisket (on Mondays and Tuesdays)!

There was a very real risk of wasting an entire day. Thankfully, Skylight Inn delivered in a big way. First, this is the kind of place that attracts everyone: police officers, construction workers, families, businesspeople in suits, and that's just on a weekday. That's always a good sign and something I love to see. Their whole hog Eastern North Carolina barbecue was absolutely worth the effort. It was incredibly flavorful and packed with texture. The crispy skin is expertly mixed throughout the meat, alongside moist pork and just enough rendered fat to create a perfect balance. Every bite had something different going on. The sweet tea was excellent, the slaw was solid, and the picnic-style potato salad hit the spot. The cornbread, however, deserves special mention. Unlike what most people think of as cornbread today, Skylight's version is made with only stone-ground cornmeal, water, salt, and pork drippings. It's dense, chewy, and rustic. No wheat flour, no sugar, and no fluffy crumb. It may not be everyone's favorite, but it's a fascinating piece of barbecue history, and I respect that they're still making it the traditional way. I came. I saw. I ate. Then I bought three pounds to go and grabbed a T-shirt on my way out. That's about as strong an endorsement as I can give. PS.....Walking the grounds is fun as well.

We got the pulled pork and chopped brisket, cornbread, mac n cheese, baked beans and a bottle of sauce (included). We felt the value for amount of food was great, and I loved that they included smaller containers of most, if not all, of their sauces so we could try them! The corn bread was great, a couple pieces were pretty dark but still warm and fresh. The baked beans, for me, was a highlight! They were so good, whatever sauce they're cooked in was SO good, I ended up dipping my pulled pork/ brisket into that instead of the sauces!! So good!!! Our kids liked the Mac n cheese, we thought it was pretty good too! Loved that the pulled pork came with no sauce, made it super easy to portion it out for my husband and keep it fresh. Thee brisket came sauced, but the flavor was really good so we were fine with that! Overall, we'd definitely do this once in a while. It was about $90 total for the family meal, which is a little steep for a regular family meal. But flavor was great, everything was fresh, and we very much enjoyed it and will have leftovers for days!!

They make them all in house. I've never added vinegar to my meat before and I'm hooked. They have this Alabama white sauce that you have to ask for and that was done so well. All the sauces were tasty. I tried their sweet tea and I'm very particular about sweetness with drinks but I thoroughly enjoyed the balance in their tea. The seasonal treat is strawberry shortcake so I ordered that and there was so much balance in their flavor. I'm partial to strawberry shortcake because it was what I often shared with my late Grandpa. I was so impressed with how good this was and it definitely added nostalgia to the experience. The service here was phenomenal and the place has so much memorabilia honoring service members. Very open and welcoming space. Lots to take in, but not overwhelming. I'm definitely glad we stopped in. 10/10 recommend if you're in the area.
