Nice quiet, clean place to get a sandwich and salad. Love that they have a salad bar. They also have a good variety of appetizers.

Leaving another review to say the patty melt is DELICIOUS and the onion rings with boom boom sauce made me "yum" out loud.

The rutabagas were delicious, & without the addition of a bunch of sugar that would ruin them. Perfectly seasoned! My mom had not eaten there in decades, She used to go frequently when she taught at Chicid, & remembers Miss Shirley fondly. Even though I grew up nearby, I don't recall having eaten there as a girl. Boy have I been missing out! Can't wait to return soon and have another generous helping of delicious rutabagas! It does remind me of so many of the mom & pop restaurants that used to oeooer the ENC. I frequented them with my parents, aunts, uncles, cousins & friends. If you're tired of big corporate cookie cutter restaurant chains, with food that all tastes the same, would like some traditional, sit down, old school charm, & a chance to slow down & revel in the nostalgia, I can without reservation suggest a trip to Bum's. Sooner rather than later. They'll welcome you out of the heat with a tall icy glass of their best sweet iced tea...and you'll know you're right where you're supposed to be!

Regulars are addressed by name and people genuinely want to know how your day is. It's a meat n twos now but plates include all the usual suspects plus a daily special. Two sides and corn sticks, cornbread, or rolls are included. Prices are very reasonable. There's both street parking and a small lot, in addition to a drive-thru window. Not fancy, but seriously good. You won't go wrong with any of the sides.

There was a very real risk of wasting an entire day. Thankfully, Skylight Inn delivered in a big way. First, this is the kind of place that attracts everyone: police officers, construction workers, families, businesspeople in suits, and that's just on a weekday. That's always a good sign and something I love to see. Their whole hog Eastern North Carolina barbecue was absolutely worth the effort. It was incredibly flavorful and packed with texture. The crispy skin is expertly mixed throughout the meat, alongside moist pork and just enough rendered fat to create a perfect balance. Every bite had something different going on. The sweet tea was excellent, the slaw was solid, and the picnic-style potato salad hit the spot. The cornbread, however, deserves special mention. Unlike what most people think of as cornbread today, Skylight's version is made with only stone-ground cornmeal, water, salt, and pork drippings. It's dense, chewy, and rustic. No wheat flour, no sugar, and no fluffy crumb. It may not be everyone's favorite, but it's a fascinating piece of barbecue history, and I respect that they're still making it the traditional way. I came. I saw. I ate. Then I bought three pounds to go and grabbed a T-shirt on my way out. That's about as strong an endorsement as I can give. PS.....Walking the grounds is fun as well.

It was a Thursday and very busy but no so busy we had to wait very long. Just good to see all kind of people really for some BBQ. The food was fantastic and I loved the sides. I'm a big Cole slaw fan and this was very finely shopped up slaw with amazing flavor. They leave the crispy skin in the pork to give you these little yummy surprises as you eat. Plenty of room in the dinning area and a covered outdoor picnic table area.

McDonald's has a great system, but when you don't follow the rules, nothing works properly. This is a perfect example here in Ayden. They even had my paper ticket up and it was on the screen facing the lobby and messed it up twice. It was a cheeseburger that's it. Someone came in with screwed up. Had to fix while I was there and several other people were waiting employees are just standing around, trying to figure out what is pathetic
