There's a line...let me jump in! Yep that's literarily how I found this spot...I was driving back to Charlotte after my half marathon...saw a line, pulled over and stood in the hour long line, happy as a 4 year old with a lollipop with my bag of BBQ. This is a carry out or eat outside spot. The line was long, but they said it was because the chicken wasn't ready. They serve Carolina vinegar based "sauce". This was the most different part for me as I'm from Indiana and have never had vinegar based sauce. Things to know before going: 1) Cash only 2) Take-out only. There are a few tables outside, though. 3) Get there early, as in 9:30 or 10am. When they sell out, they close. If you wait until normal lunchtime you may very well be out of luck. So, the food. If you don't like Eastern Carolina style vinegar based whole hog bbq you will not like B's. Therefore no complaints about "sour" sauce, "tasteless" boiled potatoes, strange "potato sticks," or lack of sugary sweet tomato sauces will be tolerated. The cue is slow cooked over charcoal. Today the texture was a bit tougher than ideal but the flavor was pretty good and the chicken was very good, moist, tender, and flavorful. The sides are unremarkable but just fine. I'm normally not a big fan of the east of Wilson area corn sticks (give me hush puppies and honey butter any day) but B's are among the better ones. This place is worth the early morning trip. A line before they open and knowing that they'll likely be sold out for lunch meant barbecue for breakfast. The service was friendly, the food was fresh. The chicken was a little dry but incredibly flavorful and the vinegar sauce was so good and not at all like what my west coast self is used to. They had plenty of seating, but I guess a hot and humid summer means most people aren't gonna sit outside. It's cash only and really affordable. Glad I got to experience B's. read more

The three most important words I can share with you about this spot is GET THERE EARLY! B's BBQ is the spot to go to if you are looking for a no-frills A+ barbecue joint. Please be advised that this is not the spot for you if you are expecting ambience, low lighting, or Michelin-rated tiny plates of rabbit food. But, you can go expecting good old down home, wholesome eating! My fave is the chicken. Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to try the ribs because I can't seem to get there early enough! But one day I will...and when I do, I'll check back in. The sisters who take your order offer service with a friendly and welcoming smile. They even give you tips on how to get the ribs and to beat the rush. But you gotta be willing to get up early in the morning. You know that you are going someplace special when you turn off the main highway and it's B's Barbeque Road that takes you to your destination! And B's fully lived up to our expectations; indeed, my significant other needed only one bite of the smoked chicken to proclaim it the best that she had tasted anywhere in the country. We ordered half a chicken and a mountain of chopped pork, with sides of coleslaw and green beans to go with finger shaped hush puppies. Add in a couple of refillable teas, and the whole came to the modest sum of $18.50. The chopped pork is classic East Carolina, and so is the sauce. Since the richly smoked meat is already lightly sauced, you really, really want to sample it before adding more. The green beans didn't impress us, but we liked the hush puppies and loved the coleslaw, which is that cold, palate cleansing bite that we always prize when eating two or more meats at a sitting. How good was the meal? We went back for seconds, and got the last chicken about 90 minutes after they opened. GO EARLY! read more

From the outside, B's may look like a total sketchy dive, but don't let that scare you...because to me this is one of the best places on the planet to eat. Not only because of the wonderful memories of BBQ sandwiches and BBQ chicken on Saturdays with my grandaddy, but also because of the unparalleled perfection of the food. B's does the best BBQ everything I've ever had that wasn't cooked at one of my family reunions. This is the way eastern NC BBQ is supposed to taste. In fact, for me...if it ain't B's I ain't eating it. It ruins you for every place else. Pro Tips for Eating from B's: (cause yeah...I've eaten there that much...lol) 1. Get there early. When the food runs out, they close up shop. If they don't run out, they'll stay open until 1:30-2ish. If you get there early enough ( between 7- 8am) you might be lucky enough to get on the list for a rack of their amazing ribs. But those go super fast. So set your alarm. You can buy chicken and BBQ pretty much anytime from about 9am on. The chickens will very likely be sold out by about 11ish...depending on the time of year and how busy they are. 2. There is no calling ahead. They don't have a phone. You will have to wait in the line. But it moves fast because these folks know what they're doing and because they aren't taking calls. Also, it gives you plenty of time to know what you want. 3. Bring cash! No phone means no way to run credit cards or take digital payments. 4. Get the BBQ sandwich to eat immediately. It's truly God's gift to those of us living in the dark ages over here east of I95. There is just nothing like that hot BBQ and cold slaw on that freshly steamed bun. Y'all might have broadband internet and a Starbucks on every corner over in Raleigh, but we get fresh B's BBQ sandwiches on the regular. So it all evens out. 5. Get a combo plate to go. It comes with chicken (your choice of light or dark meat), two sides, and corn sticks. My husband and I always get the large with double potatoes and an extra pint each of potatoes and slaw. We can usually get a couple of meals out of it. You can also buy whole or half BBQ chickens and BBQ, slaw, and sides by the pint or half pint. Don't miss out on the "red" (BBQ) potatoes. They are the best you'll find. If you're taking it to go, you'll also want them to package your corn sticks on the side so they don't get soggy. If you're sharing a plate, order extra of those too so you don't fight over them. And...don't forget to ask for extra sauce, especially if you plan on reheating your score later. 6. Take a cooler to keep your B's goodies nice and warm til you get home. Except the slaw. You want it cold (another good reason for ordering it separately from your plate). 7. Think of your friends. If you love someone, there's no greater kindness you can do than gifting them a pint of BBQ and slaw. In fact, before my husband retired, that was what I sent to his Christmas party potluck. I always got a clean crockpot back. It's also great to take for families dealing with births, funerals, parties...or just a nice thank you. 8. If you're driving a distance to come...buy extra. Trust me. You're always gonna wish you had just a little more when it runs out. And...you can freeze it. To the folks at B's, it REALLY pains me to write and leave this review, but I also feel it's necessary to share the info due to potential health-related issues. The food at B's BBQ is undeniably delicious and my family has eaten on and off there for years...until recently when my husband went inside to place our order, then immediately came back out telling me that while waiting to be served, he saw mouse droppings on several of the cabbages they use to make the slaw. I'm sure (or at least hope) it's thoroughly washed before use; however, where mice poop they also urinate as well as leave behind hair and saliva....so who knows just how clean clean really is?.?. Now, I'm not naive and realize we've unwittingly eaten it ourselves, but now that we know, and after researching the dangers, I can't bring myself to go back. For now, I'll live in "blissful ignorance" concerning other establishments we frequent - until I learn otherwise. In case you don't already know.... Mice carry, store, and spread germs of 35+ diseases, such as hantavirus*, listeria*, and salmonella** through their urine, droppings, saliva, hair and nesting materials and though eating food they've come into contact with more than likely won't kill you, it can still be a major source of severe sickness. *disease can be fatal ** usually not life-threatening However, in certain people -- especially infants and young children, older adults, transplant recipients, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems -- it can be extremely dangerous. read more

Eastern NC BBQ at it's best. In my opinion, if you want some of the best BBQ NC has to offer, B's is certainly on that list. I have been going to B's for 10-15 years since I was in school in Greenville. We would get a group together for an early lunch when we didn't have class (of course we would never skip class) to head over to stand in line at B's. As others have said, get there early. B's only serves until they run out of food, and they will run out of BBQ early. It is nothing special, just a small cinder block building nestled along the road named after it. You will see and smell the charcoal smoke as you get close. Typically there will be a line, but it will not last long and is super efficient, just be ready to order when it gets to be your turn! Of course, get the BBQ, tender, flavorful, smokey, and full of texture. It is what BBQ should be with a hint of vinegar sauce. The slaw is good, but as it should be it is there to accompany the BBQ and not overshadow it. It is fresh and crisp and a little more course than a lot of BBQ slaws I have had. Often overshadowed, B's also has grilled BBQ chicken. I would strongly suggest giving it a try! To me it is a hidden gem! As for the sides, they are good, but not really anything to write home about. Green beans, potatoes, cornsticks. All perfectly fine, but in my opinion, just go to the walk up window and get a BBQ sandwich with slaw and grab a seat at the picnic tables under the large Oak tree on the side! Take the small detour if you are driving down 264 to grab some of the best NC BBQ from B's! I drive by B's Barbecue every day to school. I thought this place was just a run down building. However, every day during lunch time this place is packed. I see cars parked in the lot and on the side of the streets. And there are always a lot people sitting on the picnic tables. This made me want to come visit. I ordered a BBQ sandwich while my friend ordered a BBQ Plate. The sandwich comes with coleslaw and corn sticks. I must say that it was the best BBQ sandwich I've ever had! It is vinegar based and they have their own sauce too! You would have to ask for it. The corn sticks tasted like french fries to me or at least something you would get from the state fair. If you needed extra buns, you can also ask them for it! Remember to bring cash!! My friend didn't have cash on her but fortunately the employees were so nice and said that they would let her come back later on just to pay. That is definitely some trust there! read more

B's is an institution of NC Barbecue, there is no denying it. So I was incredibly excited to finally make it out here before the barbecue sold out on a Friday afternoon. The line wasn't terrible, even though the place was full, as I anticipated it would be. I ended up ordering a BBQ Dinner, which included pulled pork, two sides, and corn bread sticks (think dense sticks of corn meal that are deep fried). The meat was delicious. Their vinegar sauce had a little sweetness to it, which I enjoyed, and the smokiness of the meat was spot on. There were some bits of the barbecue that were dry, unfortunately, but it was overall excellent barbecue. I tried the slaw and green beans as sides. Both were pretty standard, nothing stood out to me. The corn bread sticks were interesting. They tasted good - almost like large corn bread fries - but it took a little bit of getting used to. The sweet tea was great, and they had free refills, too. If you're looking for a new, clean space - look elsewhere. Most well-established barbecue places won't offer you that, and B's is no exception. The service was ok - they were just efficient at getting your order and getting you food.
