I've been taking both my cars to Ken Scales for the past 12 years, but since Ken retired and his…read moreson Jeff stepped back from the business things have gone downhill, which is usually what happens when there's no owner presence on-site. When I took my Subaru in for an oil change, the tech didn't tighten the oil cap which popped off and blew oil all over my engine. Then, two weeks ago my Corvette wouldn't start, made a loud noise when I pushed the start button. AAA was not able to start it. Had to call a flat bed. Ken Scales did nothing for 2 days. On the third day they called and said the battery was dead. I told them I suspected something else was wrong because a dead battery makes no sound at all when you push the start button. I asked them to check everything having to do with starting the car that might have caused that noise. When they called to say they replaced the battery, I asked if they found what was causing the noise when pushing the start button. They said it was just a dead battery that's all, couldn't find anything else. This week, I drove the Corvette to Brookings, turned the engine off, but when I tried to start it again it made the same noise as before the new battery was installed. Worse yet, AAA said there were no AAA approved automotive service places within 30 miles, and they will only tow for 3 miles. I was terrified - 2 1/2 hours from home and no way to get there. After hitting the gas pedal a couple of times, I managed to get the car started, decided to try to make it home to Jacksonville. Took the car to Bob Thomas Automotive (BBB approved). They took the car right in, called me to say they hadn't found the problem yet, but assured me they would keep looking. Next morning their best technician called to say it took him 2 1/2 hours, but he finally found the problem. The grey wire to the fuel pump was loose. I will NEVER take my cars to Ken Scales again.

He is only interested in your money. Very poor diagnosis. I got P0524 code, I called this guy, he…read moreinitially said he would charge $285 for oil change ( He brought oil and filter ) He told me he is going to use good quality oil thats why he is charging more. In that price he also promised that he will do diagnosis of P0524 code, which he did but absolutely wrong way. He removed the oil pressure valve and cleaned it and put it back since he could not find the new part in the area which is fine but it was not valve it was just oil pressure sensor. Any simple mechanic would first try to find oil pressure sensor not the valve its different thing. And Yes he took it back that new oil and filter with him and never changed. I thought he will charge me less since he said i dont need to have new oil and change because it was good. I was predicting he is trying to save my money by not having oil and filter because the issue is something else but guess what?? i was wrong. After he finished diagnosis told me it will be $300 ( he barely spent one hour ), I called him in regular hour not afterhours like midnight or early morning. I would strongly suggest please find another mechanic if you get stranded dont use his service. Money minded greedy person. Since i dont want to argue with him on that day i quitly paid $300, he just cleared the code thought he actually made fix but i was wrong, check engine light came back as soon as we hit mountain. I checked with other local shop in Redding CA and he was able to figure out actual issue, he did diagnosis and changed the oil pressure sensor very reasonable price and car was fixed. again dont go by his fake google reviews, think before anyone contact him. Has no shame getting your money.

I asked him to do a full assessment on my car because it has a lot of miles and I didn't think it's had much maintainence. He shared with me that the plugs, etc. had been changed and were in good shape (I had forgotten having it done a few years ago!). It would have been a good opportunity for a less honest mechanic to take advantage of me. We also had him find and repair a leak in the A/C of our truck. He has retired and some mechanically-inclined gentlemen whom he used to employ have taken over. It is also important to note that they are not taking credit cards at this time, so come prepared. I should also disclose that I have gone to Nelson's on and off for years whenever I needed brake work, so I'm a bit biased towards this place. That said, I came back to get my brakes done, and I am happy to say the new owners are continuing with the same tradition of great service at some of the fairest prices in town. I will continue to come here and refer friends, and am happy to see this good service continue in the same way Nelson's always treated me.
