Vintage leaded glass door installed for our pantry door.
    Anna S.

I've had a great experience shopping here. I love a hunt though and I had a couple of specific "treasures" I was looking for. I found the perfect black metal windowed exterior door for my patio. I was working with new construction so I could build to fit. It was perfect for what we wanted. Originally the door was worth $5000+ and I bought it for $1700. We also found the perfect vintage door to use as a pantry door and we hung it from barn door hardware. We had a weird narrow tall space and wanted something special. This door was solid hardwood and beautiful leaded glass. We paid about $400. It took a bit of work to clean it up, sand it down and re stain it. But it turned out gorgeous! The best part of this shop is Hands-down Baldimor and his darling wife. Baldimor is so knowledgeable and energetic and hard working. I loved supporting his business and finding just the perfect thing for my home. I love that there are people like him out there scavenging treasures from beautiful older homes and keeping them out of the landfill. Plus he was so patient and friendly with me despite all my return visits and measurements and indecision. Sales are final so I had to be sure.

my contractor brother-in-law's motto could be "well begun's the most work you can hope for outta me…read more..." so, now that we've hired a guy to finish one more of the many, many construction/remodeling projects he started, got paid for but never, ever got around to actually finishing (in this particular case patching and painting an exterior wall he tore up trying to resolve a plumbing issue which also required hiring a plumber to fix), i found myself trucking out to SAN MARCOS for mortar and stucco. any task requiring tools other than a spatula or kitchen knife is out of my comfort zone and these guys were very, very helpful mostly in a bemused sort of way -- not that i blame them as clueless as i am it's reasonable they found my feeble attempts at having anything to do with a construction project amusing. the good news is now, thanks to a little help from FREE BUILDERS SUPPLY and our very handy handyman, five years after the demo portion of the assault on the wall, our home is whole again.

Unfortunately, both Lowes and Home Depot were out at most of the stores in San Diego. I called around and found it at Free Builders. When I arrived I went straight to the counter and asked for the product. The less than friendly worker started to write up a ticket for the purchase. Now standard concrete is about $4.00 a bag and this stuff runs about $14.00 but it's better for what I was using it for and I didn't need much so worth the extra cost. But I noticed he wrote about $30.00 on his little ticket for one bag of the stuff. I asked if that was what they were charging and when he confirmed it I said "Thanks Anyway" and walked out. As I leaving the parking lot, another guy came out and said...."Oooops it's $21.00 a bag. We made a mistake" I kept driving. Now I'm a reasonable woman and I understand that a mom and pop shop does not get the same discounts as the big box stores so I expect to pay a bit more. But not double! Maybe it was an innocent mistake. Or maybe they saw a woman walk through the door in a dress and flip-flops asking for one bag of concrete and assumed that she just "don't know shit" about the cost of building materials. You decide. As for me, I don't do business with scammers.

They supply most landscape materials you need and have many samples in the store to look at. I highly recommend also requesting samples to take home so you can see how it looks where you want it. Their prices were very competitive compared to other local stores and they offer discounts for large bulk orders. For in stock items, delivery was within 24-72 hours and custom orders took a couple of weeks. I mostly interacted with Carla and Ashlee who were both great. They were responsive on the days they worked and helped to make sure my orders arrived on time. Sometimes the male employees picked up the phone, but they seemed less enthusiastic to help out. Overall, I'd recommend them for your next landscape project.

Although I live in NorCal, KRC Rock offers Barkwood gravel that isn't carried near me. Sales rep Martine took my call at the end of a Monday and said he'd check if they could mail me a sample. The sample was shipped on Wednesday and he emailed me to let me know. I got the shipment Friday, and it's a generous sample. KRC is able to ship the super sacks of decorative rock on a flatbed truck with forklift to place the sacks at my property. I still haven't decided on a decorative rock for my backyard, but I am so impressed with responsiveness from KRC Rock that I felt like giving a shout-out. (I have had much worse experience with another big SoCal company who keeps dropping the ball on my requests, on the order of months of delay with no updates. I have also read many poor reviews of a 3rd SoCal company with problematic deliveries where the material was wrong or shorted.)

This is without a doubt the worst, most unprofessional business I have ever encountered in my life…read more I paid $160,000 for glass windows and doors in a complete remodel of a high-end contemporary La Jolla home, which included two 10-foot long sliding glass doors and one 20-foot long sliding glass door. The list of serious issues I have had is long, and it has so far cost me an additional $38,000 working through things. The most expensive and biggest problem they caused me is that they insisted that I not use the Panoramic sliding doors specified by my architect and engineer. They swapped them out for La Cantina Doors, saying that I would be much happier using La Cantina. Immediately after installation the 20-foot door was binding, and couldn't be fully opened without applying so much force that my wife couldn't open it. Their explanation was that there was dirt in the tracks, and that the door would be adjusted after the back yard hardscape was in place. We foolishly trusted their advice. Two years later, when the landscaping was in place, and the door had been adjusted multiple times but still wouldn't open, I had a La Cantina Door rep examine the door who determined that the overhead support wasn't sufficient. The original Panoramic doors place all of the door weight on the floor, but La Cantina doors hang from the beam above. The additional 1200 pounds of weight was causing the overhead beam to sag just enough that the door couldn't be opened properly. Their solution was to tear open the roof and reinforce the beam. After consultation with my architect and engineer, and now NOT trusting their advice, we simply replaced the 20 foot La Cantina door with the originally specified Panoramic door. The beam was sagging with additional weight, but that particular beam was in fact designed to flex, and the engineer assured me that it wasn't permanently damaged. He was right. The Panormaic door works perfectly When the finishes around the "new" Panoramic door were all repaired, it cost me an additional $38,000. Now I am hiring an engineer to tell me if the other two 10-foot doors should also be replaced, as the roof of the house was not designed to support the additional weight of La Cantina Doors. A competent window and door company would have known that these very different doors have different structural requirements. When the hardscape was finally put in, we discovered another problem with Sierra Padre's installation. NONE of the 9 exterior doors were weather sealed at the bottom! My GC, who I believe was getting a kick back from them, told me that his flooring contractor usually weather-sealed under the doors. I now believe this was just a scam to get me to pay for extra labor. When I called Sierra Padre out on this, they immediately sent out a crew of 6 guys who weather sealed all of the doors for no extra charge. It also turns out that the La Cantina doors open in an accordion fashion, whereas the Panoramic doors slide to one side, then open and stack up upon each other at one end. What that means practically speaking is that indoor and outdoor furniture can placed within a few inches of the door in all locations except for at one end if you use a Panoramic door. But because they accordion outwards, you need to keep about 3 or 4 feet clear behind large La Cantina doors. By insisting I use La Cantina doors, Sierra Padre compromised the use of my outdoor patios, which are rather small. There were other problems as well. The original order specified that many of the windows and doors were to be frosted glass. Who would want clear glass windows in the bathroom, as a front door, into the garage, or into an outdoor utility closet? Most of the widows and doors that were supposed to be frosted were manufactured with clear glass, and it was VERY difficult to get them to make them replace the clear glass with frosted glass. And they made the same error even on the re-order! One of the windows specified in the plans was missing, and the re-order came in clear glass. They did take this one back with any argument, but believe it or not, when the re-re-order was delivered, this second re-order also came to us in clear, not frosted glass, and so it had to be re-ordered a third time. Some screens were also missing, which we didn't figure out until the project was almost over, and it took some coercing to get these as well. And we still have minor problems. Some of the window hardware is the wrong color, and I only have 3 keys to 9 exterior doors, which means that every door I can open from the outside has a different key, and three of the doors cannot be opened from the outside of the house, because they didn't come with keys! I have called repeatedly for nearly 8 months now with this problem. Each time Kevin apologizes and tells me that he will order coordinated door cylinders and get back to me next week, but today he hung up on me. Stay away from this crappy business !!!!
