We recently bought door knobs from Home Depot and saw the same brand here for half the price that we paid. The flooring section wasn't as extensive as we envisioned however, the prices were reasonable. Anytime I would pause at a door and examine it for more than a few seconds I would hear "Hello Ma'am! Anything I can help with?" With a genuine tone of wanting to help. Everyone is so friendly and eager to answer questions, help you find what you're looking for, give ideas, etc. what I liked the most is the zero pressure or sales vibe which helped me relax and make my decision. I bought all new pre hung doors for the house and was prepared to spend a few thousand but I saved so much compared to a Home Depot/Lowes buying here and the customer service here is top tier. They were out of a few doors that I needed but they assemble them there! So later this week I'll be back to pick them up all up at once. Eric did a fantastic job designing my kitchen from scratch. I was building a new house and had used a discount architect who doesn't design interiors, so all I had to go on for the kitchen were the plumbing and electrical locations. Eric created the entire kitchen with his software. Builders Surplus has a great selection of all-wood kitchen cabinets. It was so helpful being able to see the exact design elevations on paper and on computer screen, and Eric was very patient because I changed my mind several times. In addition, I was using vintage appliances, so that created an extra challenge. In the end, I got just what I wanted. I am very pleased with this design experience. The pocket doors for a cottage were are building and them in clearance area. The farmhouse sink I needed was a small size and we had the perfect sink. Alan (a poor excuse of a manager) insulted my intelligence with attempting to convince me that I didn't pay a restocking fee although I have a receipt which clearly states RETOCK FEE! This is a great place to find almost any of your remodeling needs. I what searched for a 43x22 vanity counter top and all dept stores (HD&Lowes) had to special order it and it would take a week or two to come in. Did that twice and both times they came broken which set me back time and money. This place had 5 different versions in stock and even helped me load it so it wouldn't crack or break. I called and they gave me a lot of info before making the hour drive across town. It wasn't to easy to find because they are warehouses all around but I uploaded pictures to Waze to show the outside. My husband went in to Builder's Surplus looking for a set of doors for my craft room. He FaceTimed me so that I could see my options. Dee was extremely helpful; he pulled out doors so I could get a better view of them. I was able to find the perfect doors for my space. Then I sent my husband on another mission to find the barn door I wanted. Dee patiently answered my extensive questions and took the time to discuss the pros/cons of the different types of barn door hardware. While there, my husband also saw some bathroom vanities that he liked. He decided to come home and get me so I could see them in person. Upon arrival, Dee was assisting another customer. As he walked past me he smiled and said, "I recognize your face from the phone!" We looked at vanities while Dee finished up with the other customer, then he came over to assist us. There was a lot of back and forth while we tried to pair the perfect vanity with the perfect countertop. Dee did not hesitate to go out in the 102 degrees Houston heat multiple times to find various countertops for us. He was once again patient with all my questions (and mind-changes) and went out of his way to help us create the look we needed for our bathrooms. It seems to be rare to find good customer service, let alone EXCELLENT customer service, but Dee provided excellent customer service! I have been in the store/ warehouse for 40 mins looking and pricing other items for a kitchens remodel. I came here for my mother's French door for the patio and it is $599.00 with blinds built in plus I needed installation. In my 40 mins: The one customer your salesman was helping left without purchasing, three customers and one pick up entered after me. Why did they get greeted and asked if they needed help? Why was I the only one left to roam the store looking for someone to give money to? BTW: I like the motion sensors on the warehouse lights. Thanks for going green! So what do we call this? While the prices are on the high side (go to Door Clearance Center, they are better priced), the exact door that I wanted, was in stock at Builder's Surplus. So I decided against my better judgement and ordered from Builder's Surplus. My first inclination that I should have been worried was the big sign at the front of the store that read all sales are final. As a consumer, this always makes me hesitate and is normally a red flag that the company is not customer friendly and will not support you in any way after the purchase is made. Well... That is exactly what happened. I'll spare all of the granular details, but information that would have been extremely helpful was omitted during the sales process (not their job per Eric Lynch - "Manager"). When it was time to get the door installed, the issue was discovered and it could be fixed for an additional $150 dollars. While the sum was not a large amount, when I called the manager (Eric Lynch) to discuss what could be done, he was beyond rude. I've dealt with unprofessional employees before but he is a horrible excuse for a manager. I do not say this lightly. He blamed me and told me that he should actually charge me more to fix the issue. I asked why the information was omitted and he said it's not his job to ask the customer questions about their purchase. Wow... I will be sure to never shop with this company again and hope that someone reads this review and decides to go elsewhere as well. Customer service is big and they failed miserably. Knowing how they talk to their customers, I am fully expecting to get a response to this post with them blaming me again. Good riddance. read more

On Monday we went to the Houston store on Pine Timbers. The store was too busy to meet with us to give us an estimate on the cabinets we wanted. So we left our measurements for the cabinets and were told that on Wednesday we will get the cost estimate. No estimate on Wednesday so we called on Thursday and were told that the person that handles that was off on Thursday. We called twice on Friday but were told that he was busy but he will call us. My wife and I had a great experience with the Cabinet Guru, Eric! We did a total kitchen remodel (we're still waiting on the backsplash, etc) and Eric was an enormous help and very easy to deal with. We're in Austin, so we actually came and picked them up in a uhaul. The guys at builder's surplus loaded them for us with ease. We're very pleased with the quality of the cabinets (plywood, soft close, hinges, etc) and the price was literally unbeatable. There was a small hiccup with a cabinet size (more a manufacturer's issue than anyone else's fault). Eric was very responsive and went above and beyond to make sure the problem was rectified and we were happy. I didn't expect that level of customer service from a "budget" option. I would absolutely go back to them again for future remodels and have already given their information to someone else. I will echo many of the other sentiments expressed here with regard to customer service - unequivocally the worst experience I've ever had. They managed to send the wrong door not once, but twice. The second door they sent me - which is still not the actual door I ordered, has: (1) a large gap all the way around the wooden trim and the glass and (2) glue spilling out of the aforementioned gaps. Instead of offering to make this right, their proffered solution was that I could pick up a piece of glass from their store and install it myself.... I've literally never experienced customer service this bad. read more

If I could put a zero I would have put it doesn't give me that option first of if you will be purchasing any windows from here make sure that they write in the system the exact same measurements that you give them .I gave the gentlemen the measurements on a paper he typed them wrong I got 2 of my windows wrong ,spoke to two people to get them fix which they offer to order the correct ones which I have to pay for and they won't take the ones that they gave me wrong. This place is NOT a Surplus. Material prices are exactly priced the same or higher as the Big Box Stores (Home Depot & Lowes) no additional discounts such as military 10% discounts. And you can not return. NO REFUNDS... only a store credit. And if you lose your paper receipt store credit then you are SOL. This place doesn't care because they think they are giving you a Surplus Price. I would NEVER shop here again nor would I recommend them to anyone. Save your time & money and spend it somewhere that appreciates your business. I bought 6 doors and one they gave me the wrong swing open, so I went to return it but they said it was my fault to verify before I purchased. For starters, I have Wellborne Premier Custom Cabinetry throughout my home. If you're not familiar with the name, it's because there are not many distributors "privileged" enough - as they put it - to carry the brand. In the Houston area, there are only two, with Builder's Surplus being one of them. After we flooded this past April, I needed to find someone who could accurately quote the RCV of those cabinets as well as replace them - hence my finding out about Builder's Surplus.... The couple times I've visited, the guys there (Eric, Ethan, Chris) have been MORE than willing to assist. From taking the necessary time in an attempt at quoting out new cabinets, to helping me with other little odds & ends here and there - even tracking down the exact color to my existing door fronts. Never once did I feel rushed, or brushed off, as if my business didn't matter. That presentation alone is a surefire way to earn my business. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've visited an establishment, only to be made to feel as if my money wasn't worth something. I never once got that impression here. The shop itself is a warehouse type set-up and there are things EVERYWHERE. They have it all... doors, sidelights, bath fixtures, cabinets, tubs, tile, door knobs, etc... The only problem I have (which is truly a personal opinion) is there's no way to know exactly what they have at any given time. As an aside, I haven't found any of the items that I did stumble upon, to be less than stellar in quality and have actually found SOME of the items to be pretty competitive in pricing. The key is to match.... The shop is in a fairly accessible location (Hempstead Rd) & easy to find - amongst A LOT of builder supply businesses and granite wholesalers, so obviously with the rebuild, I felt like I was in fixtures & finishes heaven! The 4 stars is for the chaotic store. While there are directives posted throughout to put you in the general direction of what you're seeking, there are many items you'd have to dig through to find what you need/want. Even with a good portion of product readily accessible & at your fingertips, that's not always ideal in my situation - merely with time not permissive. Utlimately, I'll definitely keep them in mind as a go-to for any remodel project I have - whether in my own home or my rentals. Plus - they already have my heart since they carry Wellborne! ;-) read more

The store manager at the Houston location (Chad?) had his floor associate, then assistant manager speak with me in lieu of doing it personally. Even as I waited for the assistant manager to fully load a customer's truck. It was lunchtime, but it's a 5 minute conversation... I take my stand with this internet post, no more builders surplus for me. Big box, Wayfair/Amazon/Build.com all have better service and as good of pricing. read more
