I have a full home remodel that I'm doing and stopped at Builders Surplus today to source about 20 doors and multiple items for the project, and could not be more disappointed. Before going I checked out the website and there was really no information, prompted to stop by the store for more information. I live quite far but made the drive and hope so finding items that would be reasonable and in stock. I got to the store around 9:00 on a Thursday morning, there were lots of employees around, all seemingly to be busy unloading a truck. I walked around on my own for a while and was not finding what I was looking for so went to the front for assistance. Three employees just stood there talking ignoring me and finally acknowledged me, I told them I was looking for help with doors and they call over a kid. This kid didn't look old enough to work much less know much about doors but I gave him a shot. He proceeded to show me he really didn't know what he was talking about. He tried to page the manager and she told she was busy. A gentleman on a lift notice the perplexed look I'm guessing and asked if I needed help and I said absolutely. He was much more informative, we narrowed down quickly that most likely they didn't have the type of door I was looking for, they did take me out to the door graveyard out back to search further. I don't know how a company does business not having their information online or having employees who know the stock or a system they can look in. As a remodeler, my time is very important and I do feel that I've wasted a lot of time attempting to come here. Don't waste your time with this place. read more

The obnoxiously bad service here obligates me to warn you from working with these people. A simple order for some slab doors takes countless hours of followup. Our contractor went to pick up our order and they couldn't find it - he wasted over an hour waiting on them, and ended up leaving frustrated (and billed us for the time). I have to call them repeatedly to find someone to hunt down our order, and if being left on hold for hours isn't bad enough, their hold music comes from a 1985 Casio electronic music generator. It will truly drive you insane. When we tried to add two more doors to an order, they can't find the order again. Every time you call, you will be left on hold indefinitely. If you offer constructive criticism/feedback about this issue, it's met with immature backtalk, from people who genuinely don't care. Needless to say, I'll find supplies elsewhere in the future. read more

This place has no idea of what they are doing. When they put surplus in their name. That's exactly what you are getting LEFT OVER JUNK. AS IS NO RETURNS. Save yourselves some time and a headache and go to Seconds & Surplus it's whole lot better place and they care about their reputation! We purchased two exterior doors not realizing that one of them needed to have a 2x6 jam. I called back up and the guy I spoke to told me that it wasn't a big deal they have a kit that we could use to convert it. It's a $100 bucks. So we go down there- not that easy. It has to be modified- BY THEM. They don't have the time to do it. Their exact words were, "We're not going to stop a job for you". Wow- HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. And- did I mention that when we bought the doors we paid for them over the phone and when we went to pick them up we were told that they did not have a record of them being paid for and we would have to wait to pick them up because the guy we ordered from was not at work and they were not going to call him at home. Forgetting the fact that we had a copy of the Credit card authorization form along with a printout of our credit card statement showing that they were charged. Disappointing visit looking for flooring and other remodel items. They had a decent selection, but their prices are most certainly not surplus prices. We saw all kinds of items that were about the same price or even more expensive than your standard stores, and some of the items they have are out of the box items! The sales people also hound you like they're selling Bibles, so be wary. I wonder if they get paid on commission which would explain the pricing. We ended up going with someone else for flooring that was a way better price and included installation. Feel free to go to compare, but be prepared to be underwhelmed. read more

The door we were looking at was 762.00 on sale at seconds and surplus and we paid 450.00! Home Depot and Lowes were also pretty expensive. I've been trying to buy a window from this location for quite a while. First they weren't in stock, then they said they had some and I drove all the way there to come away empty handed. The next shipment came in and another wasted trip to find out they didn't have any screens. I was told later I could've bought the window and they would've ordered the screen for no extra cost but that's not what the associate told me at the time so I waited again. I called again and was told they couldn't quote a price but it would be under $300. The price up to that point had been around $269. I drove all the way there again to be told the price went up to $442. The only reason I went through all this drama is because Home Depot and Lowe's don't stock this particular size in a single hung. (47.5 x 59.5) I told them about my experience and there was no empathy to my situation. Hence the 1 star review. read more

I have purchased doors and molding from them on multiple occasions. They are NOT the lowest price around. There are some items that are downright steals. However, you have to know your products to not overspend on the others. Their interior doors and trim are reasonable and plentiful. IF YOU ARE THINKING OF PURCHASING CABINETS FROM HERE... DON'T. PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF THE TEARS AND NIGHTMARE. Let me start by saying that MOST of the staff were a joy to work with. Now sit back and let me tell you about my NIGHTMARE. My home flooded and I had to do a complete remodel. I've shopped at Builders Surplus for many years so I decided to get most of my things here at the Garland location plus my contractor has a good relationship with this store. I went in and did a cabinet consulatation with Mark. He seemed to be very knowledgeable... SEEMS is the key word here. He will make mistakes that will cost you heartache and money when he shows NO COMPASSION for your additonal dollars you will have to spin. WARNING!!!! Keep up with all your paperwork and renderings. After I did the consultation I met with my contractor and I returned to make changes before Mark placed the order. One thing I was very adament about was have a "trash cabinet". I made the change and was given the printed copy. Before the cabinets even arrived I went into the store and told Mark I had a bad dream and even tried to pay to just cancel the order and start over but of course I couldn't. Well when cabinets arrived the dream/nightmare started unfolding. When my contractor prepared to install the cabinets he called me and said the cabinets were not correct. I sent him a photo from my phone of the rendering and he noticed something wasn't right. I called Mark just to find out that 2 cabinets were missing from my order. I had paid for them but they didn't get ordered. My contractor proceeded with what he did have and then I discover I didn't have the trash cabinet. I returned to the store and was informed that I NEVER ORDERED THE TRASH CABINET. After about an hour of going back and forth Mark said he would go speak with his manager (Trevor). Marked returned to tell me that the manager said there was NOTHING he was willing to do for me. He wouldn't discount a new order or do a rush shipping. The only thing I could do was REORDER AND REPAY for 2 new cabinets. Since I was positive that I had ordered I kept looking for the paper work and I remembered I had a copy in my phone. BAM... Got'em. Now both Mark and Trevor were looking might crazy and trying to still figure who to blame and even tried to say maybe it wasn't their rendering/copy. Trevors words were "well I guess with the proof she have on her phone, we have no choice but to order her a new cabinet". Not one apology, no empthy or anything. I returned on the following day and spoke with store manager Timothy Buck and he was a dream come true. He ordered the cabinet and made sure I got it that day by sending a freight company to pick it up. 5 stars to Timothy. Now after everything was installed my fridge wouldn't fit. Durning the consultation I advised Mark that my fridge was really big but he insisted it had to be 70 inches tall. He never took into consideration that there are hindges on top that would prevent the cabinet from opening even though I tried to tell him this during the consulations. Mark just kept telling me that "oh it has to fit because that's the height that's my computer". I took his word for it SINCE HE IS THE EXPERT... WRONG!!!. I was also told that I need extra molding and a side panel that I didn't need. My contractor couldn't understand why he even sold me some of this since my cabinets were completely finished. When I returned it today, Mark just said "oh well, we can't give you a refund". You OK'd it so now it's yours. It turned out to be $140 worth of items. He also said I had to order and pay for another cabinet $280 because it was up to me to inform him if his rendering was incorrect. I tried to tell him but he didn't listen but I'm the one having to pay. Please understand it's not so much about the money but if I sat down with an expert and was told I need the extra item and that my fridge would fit because it has to be standard when infact my fridge has extra hindges that the PROFESSIONAL CABINET EXPERT didn't take into consideration I feel Builders Surplus should have paid to take order me another cabinet. I've spent 13k in the last 30 days and Builders Surplus doesn't treat me like they value my business at all. I understand have policies and proceedures in place because I'm a business owner for the past 17 years. Sometime you have to bend a little, expecially when you wrong and the words "I APOLOGIZE" are not that hard to say when you wrong. The Building Materials Surplus at Farmer's Branch, Tx. They were very rude on the phone. I called to get directions and they told me that they only had one store and that I needed to look at the address right. I asked to confirm and they said "that's the only address they had" very rude. When the Carlos got there they were still rude and only one guy was willing to help load. Carlos had most of the weight since the 2nd guts was just looking and not helping. Carlos got scratches due to having most of the door on his side. Then when Carlos was securing the door the 2 guys were just watching him and mumbling to themselves. This is one of those moments when we all invariably say "I drove that far for this crap!?" I went looking for a set of French Doors for my dining room. Nothing from the outset worked at this place. I had already established a baseline price at the nearby Home Depot so I know what the ballpark price should be. Of course, this was the price for the set of doors that would almost exactly fit the opening I was trying to close off. Home Depot could special order them for about $319. I was only at Builders Surplus for about 5 minutes after they said they only had sets that were 12" narrower than the opening I had, or they could "shave down" a set that was inferior in quality....and both sets were about $70 more expensive, unprimed for painting and of cheesy construction. The only thing that was impressive was a bathtub with a built in television, surround sound and all kinds of other bells and whistles. So, if you're a pimp looking for a new tub, this is your place. Otherwise don't make the drive. The stores motto is "Smashing High Prices." My daughter revised it for them. "Smashing High Prices...and then putting them right back together again, but much more cheesily!" read more

Went there for a 36x80 entry door and found plenty of choices. And I changed my mind three times over a 3 week period. I worked with Andy and he never lost his patience and hustled to find what I needed with a great attitude all three times I returned to find a different door. My lack of ability to get the right door until the third try was a terrible "time suck" for these guys but despite this, they were just as nice as they could be. Andy is the best and Tim was too. I've spent over $10,000 here in the last three months because I have a home building company. They sent me a 5ft door. They refuse to give me a refund on those two doors. I'm posting here because this company likes to delete their negative reviews on their Facebook page. I've also created a complaint with the BBB. I will continue to repost on every page possible until people know how these people work. We have also contacted our attorney. This doesn't bother our time one bit but it will show your customers how much you care for their business and the black ones. Notice they have negative reviews on the places that can't delete. Obviously their "all sales are final" only applies to a customer they've screwed over" but not when they've messed up and don't want to honor their price. They're all for give you a refund then. It's always a bad experience with their stores. Dealt with their Garland location purchased a steel door with them for $800 and some change. Didn't take it with because my guys would pick it up the next day in a truck. The day after paying for it we received a call from Kyle I believe his name was ( a manager) stating that the door accidentally had the wrong price on it and his employee rang up the wrong price and we could not pick it up. Instead we could get a refund or pay an addition $400 for it. In what customer service world is it okay to fault a customer for a employees mistake to process a payment and not honor a tag that's on a item. Non apologetic Kyle was the nastiest to deal with and could careless about loosing a customer or maybe just their black ones. This isn't the first time we've dealt with this type of situation. If it's not the price that's messed up and them trying to get more money, it's them following you around the store like a criminal after you spent thousands of dollars with them. Not surprised at all by that. Update to this: We just received a call from an undisclosed employee that took our information from our order and called because they stated it was wrong on all levels. Stating they need to honor the price that was on it and also they went to harass the guy that placed the sold sticker on it after purchase asking him "so what really happened" and were probably firing him. We didn't share five words with the guy other than pointing the door out but assuming since he was black he HAD to be giving the "hook up" or something. Highly in appropriate and if they do fire him our company will gladly pay for his attorney fees to sue the hell out of them for discrimination and wrongful termination.
