This was my first meal I had, fresh off my flight from New York,…read moreand though I've been to Paris many times, I never tire of the bistro food that is so plentiful and so good across the city. Le Café du Coin's innovation is its daily-refreshed menu (they literally date stamp the paper menus each day, provide the exact day of service since they've opened, and use very seasonal ingredients); the laid-back, unfussy, but still-gourmet food elevates this restaurant as one of the gems in its genre. On the late summer day I came, there were many tempting options on the menu, with the bounty of the summer produce available. I opted for one of their classic and much-lauded pizettes (a round flatbread), that day's version featuring a combination I adore: cacio e pepe. It was pillowy and crisp, with generous cheese and a wonderful savory flavor. Next, for my main, I opted for the grilled sardine with watermelon salad and a grilled Persian cucumber: this as a combination I'd never had before, and there was a salsa verde/pesto that tied all the elements together so well. I didn't mind the tiny bones in the 3 sardines because most of them were pretty soft, and it was wonderful to have such fresh fish. Lastly, for dessert, they were out of the apricot tart I wanted, but I was happy to try my second choice, a bounty of summer delight: peach sorbet, a shortbread cookie (sablé), and slices of the most exquisite red-skinned peaches I've ever had. The natural wine list impressed me: it was tightly curated and clearly complemented the season/food. I had a crisp white of a grape and region I'd never heard of before, and wasn't disappointed! If you are willing to try new things and eat food that is truly authentic and reflective of Paris, now, Le Café du Coin is an excellent place to experience that. I truly felt incredulous about my lunch menu costing only €20 (the wines were all €6 or less a glass!) and the place being filled with mostly locals -- that's hard to find in Paris in August. Service was kind and helpful though they were a little slammed by the lunch crowd. Don't miss out on this place; the tourists will swarm it soon!

For lunch, we order the french onion soup because when in Paris and YUM SO DELISH! Savory and warm and comforting even on a lovely spring day. And we shared some croque madames which were delish! A lovely fried egg on top and delish ham and cheese and they came with french fries which were great as well. This is a great spot to stop in for lunch!

Escargot: This type of snail is a different type than I thought; I suppose it's the authentic version in France. It was cooked in a garlic butter sauce so it was super simple. Was there anything wowing about it? Not particularly. It was good but nothing screamed on either the super good nor bad spectrum. The gizmo they used to handle the snail was more interesting. Foi gras: It was such a chunky portion. It was thick and pretty hard to spread. And as such, the thing that could have made it better was if it was at room temperature. It was just a tad too cold and wouldn't spread too well on the toast. It was also really hard to really enjoy its full flavors. Also, the toast was more like it was on its way to being a crouton. The side of sauteed onions was also a very interesting accompaniment. French onion soup gratinated: This was the most flavorful thing in the world. We learned later that with the words "gratinated," it makes it a more authentic version with the cheese and bread atop of the soup versus just having onion soup. The Cantal cheese and how it crisped and infused with the bread was amazing. And the broth was also stupid crazy with flavor. The hubs was just wowed away when he sampled this. Beef tartare: There was a generous portion of the beef tartare. It was fresh in a way. It sort of looked like a pile of raw beef which technically it was. I enjoyed it, but the hubs really enjoyed this pick. The French fries and salad were so so sides. An interesting thing to serve alongside beer tartare IMO. I guess it's the French way! The food overall was good. Service was great. There was a good variety of food choices. There were plenty of lunch options to choose from that's a pretty good deal.

Our waitress was very sweet; she helpfully recommended the salmon to me after I skimmed the menu and asked for her opinion. The food took a while to come out, but I didn't mind; the yummy bread kept me busy. The salmon was delightful! A tuft of arugula sitting atop a poached egg, which after being cut, drools nicely onto the salmon below, all of which is sitting atop a fried potato pancake (I think a latke?). It was delicious and very light. The potato was my favorite; crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a boutique cafe to slowly enjoy their meal.

There were only 4 available the day I came, so a lot of the dishes I'd read about weren't available, and you can't mix and match courses (I couldn't have ordered the French Toast and the Benedict, unless I got two entire meals to myself). Although most of the guests seemed like tourists, there were still French speaking customers and this did not feel touristy. THE WAIT: We got here at 12:25pm, and it was about a 30-minute wait. THE SERVICE: Excellent, very accommodating to us with a stroller, and they spoke great English. THE COST: 75€ total for two brunch tastings and a couple extra pastries to go. THE FOOD: LE RIVE GAUCHE, 32€ * Vitamin juice (carrot, ginger, etc) - 4 stars Sharp & pulpy - I enjoyed this! * Coffee - 4 stars Good, but unlike most other places we went in France, ordering a cafe did not mean getting an espresso. * Madeleine - 3 stars Dry. Needed butter or jam to be edible. * Selection of breads - 3.5 stars Fine, my boyfriend loved the grain roll, but I found it a little bland a dry. Honestly these are a little bland compared to the rest of the meal! * Roesti with smoked salmon - 5 stars My bf says: it was a menagerie of delicate flavors - it was really f****** good. Slightly picky thing I noticed - the poached egg did not have a runny, but rather a soft, yolk. * French toast - 4.5 stars Very soft and moist, great with the light (and not overly sweet) whipped cream. LE VERO DODAT, 32€ * Cappuccino - 4 stars On the sweeter side, but perfect for me. Nice thick texture. * Mini croissant - 4.5 stars Airy light with a lovely ever so slight crisp. Loved this. Great with butter or jam, or without. * Scrambled eggs - 5 stars Silky soft, absolutely perfect textures! Fyi a lot of the same flavors/sauces as the Roesti (in the "Le Rive Gauche"). * Claus muesli or homemade granola (not sure which one I got) - 4 stars Lovely toasted flavor, and the hazelnuts were an amazing addition (I make homemade granola and this makes me want to add hazelnut into the mix!). My first time having fresh miniatures lingonberries and I liked the tart contrast they brought. A LA CARTE PASTRIES * Brioche bread - 4 stars Lovely, fluffy, and soft. We bought this in the way out and didn't eat it for 18 hours, but it was still great (the tiniest bit dry by then). * Matcha bread - 4.5 stars Still crazy moist after 18 hours in our bag. Definitely dense, and love the flavor!

When my granddaughter saw they also had gelato, we got gelato. One of the rituals of our vacation to London and now Paris seems to be consuming gelato. I got a scoop of the chocolate in a cup, which looked kind of sad in the bottom of a too large cup. Tasted fine though, good chocolate flavor and I assume tiny pieces of chocolate to give it not quite the smooth texture you would associate with gelato. The setup was a little odd, you stand in a line and give your order for drinks and how many scoops you want, then get into a second line and tell the scooper what flavors you want. We weren't the only tourists who thought that was unusual, normally you give your complete order and get it without needing a second line. Maybe there was a temporary issue where the scooper couldn't keep up with the order taker / cashier.
