Buffets are a tradition in Trieste - they emerged as a way to feed Trieste's dockworkers and shopkeepers, who needed fast and affordable food - so I knew I wanted to try one when I was in Trieste for a day earlier this summer. My husband and I stopped by Buffet L'approdo for a late lunch after a few hours of exploring Trieste on a rainy day. Buffet L'approdo has been around for more than 100 years, so it's well known in Trieste and very popular. There are very few tables in L'approdo, and all of them and the standing window were full, so we stood at the bar where we ordered a few panini and a beer and a glass of wine. The service was great, and so were the panini (we ordered two each, which was the perfect amount). This lunch was special. You really feel the history at a place like L'approdo, which makes it the perfect meal for a day in Trieste. read more
