We had one night in Trieste before a cruise. We had passed by the Pizzeria di Napoli when we were walking earlier in the day and decided we would come back and try if for dinner because it was just down the street from our hotel. Plus, my husband noticed that they had gnocchi on the menu and the prices seemed very reasonable.
We were there on a Thursday evening. Downtown Trieste was bustling and the restaurant was quite busy inside and on the patio; however we noticed a few empty tables. We went inside the doorway and at least 3 different servers or staff members passed us by without even a "someone will be with you shortly," comment. We stood there awkwardly for about 5 minutes and we were just about to try someplace else when a young woman came by and asked us if we would like a table outside.
Once we were seated a waitress came by pretty soon thereafter to take our orders. I ordered a pizza with sausage and mushrooms on it and my husband continued on with his choice of gnocchi. We both ordered an Italian beer as well. Our server came by right after we ordered and plopped a brown paper bag of bread down on the table. (No words-just left the bag of bread). It was good but if needed some butter or olive oil, and we were given neither. We tried it, but left most of it on the bag.
The meals were promptly delivered. The pizza was plenty big enough for two. I liked it; but the crust was very thin, and not firm, so I had to eat most of it with a knife and fork. My husband had an ok sized portion of gnocchi. He said it was good; but nothing more special than he was used to from back in the USA.
My husband finished his gnocchi and I took half of my pizza for a late night snack. We liked the restaurant but found that it was nothing spectacular, and the service definitely could be a little more welcoming. read more
