In my jar there were calamari, mussels, baby clams, octopus, and scampis. If I was home I would have taken the sauce for pasta. For pizza we ordered the prosciutto e funghi. The pizza was one of the best Neapolitan style pizza I've ever had. The crust was the right amount of cooked without being burnt and there's just enough toppings on the pizza without the crust being soggy. The servers were friendly and attentive and our meal was paced properly. They did charge a one euro cover per person, which we thought was very reasonable. Considering earlier for lunch we went to a restaurant that charged 2 euros per person.

Scarpon has been there forever, offering a homey feeling, no big scenes, no pretentiousness, just very good food at very good price and a friendly service. Scarpon has plenty of traditional Trieste dishes, but specializes in fish and seafood, so indulge, because this quality at these prices is very hard to find. I can't even suggest what you eat, haven't had anything that wasn't very good. If you visit from the USA you will probably pass out when you see the price of the branzino here: we are talking about a great fish offered at US hamburger prices! Scarpon is a legend in Trieste and for good reasons!

I walked in just as they were opening for lunch, and being the only customer in what looked more like the deck of a ship than a restaurant, I actually wasn't sure if I was in the right spot until a few minutes of waiting when the owner popped out of the kitchen and led me to a table. "We have the best fish soup in Trieste, and the second best in Italy," he tells me proudly. I peruse the Italian-only menu and understand almost none of it. While not confident in his own English skills, the owner patiently gave me a few other non-soup recommendations. I ended up settling on the "little of this, little of that" seafood combo. Out came a fantastic platter of sardine, barley-mixed octopus, olive-mixed squid, oysters, and about 5 other things that he didn't know the English for and that I couldn't identify. Everything tasted like it had been freshly caught that morning. It also came with bread, and a huge slice of polenta, which to this day is the best polenta I've ever had. Prices were very reasonable, and I'd definitely go back next time I find myself in Trieste...even if it's just to try that seafood soup that hindsight tells me I probably should have ordered.
