The best Zuppa di Cozze in Trieste. All the salads and the calamari are outstanding. And good wait staff. You can do a lot worse in Trieste.

** in Italiano sotto*…read more A classic! One of the most traditional Trieste Eateries, and a must visit when in town. Scarpon has been there forever, offering a homey feeling, no big scenes, no pretentiousness, just very good food at very good price and a friendly service. Scarpon has plenty of traditional Trieste dishes, but specializes in fish and seafood, so indulge, because this quality at these prices is very hard to find. I can't even suggest what you eat, haven't had anything that wasn't very good. If you visit from the USA you will probably pass out when you see the price of the branzino here: we are talking about a great fish offered at US hamburger prices! Scarpon is a legend in Trieste and for good reasons!

You cannot visit Trieste without visiting this restaurant as well!…read more This medium sized restaurant is located right in the center of the city (= parking is a nightmare, you better use public transportation), and specializes in fish, seafood and local cuisine. I have been to this restaurant many times and it has never disappointed: the food is AMAZING; they have very good wines and after-meals-drinks as well; and the prices are very decent. Since it is always full of people (also because it has a lot of regulars on a daily basis!), you need to make reservations well in advance. Despite being extremely busy all the times, the staff is always very professional. I look forward to go back!

Rating: 88/100 pts…read more Fate brought me to Alla Voliga when I was in search of good local food, and the meal certainly did not disappoint. I walked in just as they were opening for lunch, and being the only customer in what looked more like the deck of a ship than a restaurant, I actually wasn't sure if I was in the right spot until a few minutes of waiting when the owner popped out of the kitchen and led me to a table. "We have the best fish soup in Trieste, and the second best in Italy," he tells me proudly. I peruse the Italian-only menu and understand almost none of it. While not confident in his own English skills, the owner patiently gave me a few other non-soup recommendations. I ended up settling on the "little of this, little of that" seafood combo. Out came a fantastic platter of sardine, barley-mixed octopus, olive-mixed squid, oysters, and about 5 other things that he didn't know the English for and that I couldn't identify. Everything tasted like it had been freshly caught that morning. It also came with bread, and a huge slice of polenta, which to this day is the best polenta I've ever had. Prices were very reasonable, and I'd definitely go back next time I find myself in Trieste...even if it's just to try that seafood soup that hindsight tells me I probably should have ordered.
