** in Italiano sotto*…read more A classic! One of the most traditional Trieste Eateries, and a must visit when in town. Scarpon has been there forever, offering a homey feeling, no big scenes, no pretentiousness, just very good food at very good price and a friendly service. Scarpon has plenty of traditional Trieste dishes, but specializes in fish and seafood, so indulge, because this quality at these prices is very hard to find. I can't even suggest what you eat, haven't had anything that wasn't very good. If you visit from the USA you will probably pass out when you see the price of the branzino here: we are talking about a great fish offered at US hamburger prices! Scarpon is a legend in Trieste and for good reasons!

I ordered first from the board, then asked for recommendations, and the man at the bar was smooth, thoughtful, attentive, and caring, replying to my crude Italian in English (as all bar staff seem to do in Trieste). Dark but vividly decorated interior, with lots of wood; superb overall atmosphere. A really great place to try a variety of wines, at very good prices, with nice bar snacks, in a memorable atmosphere. An excellent experience.

We ordered fish croquettes to start with and they were great. Yummy flavor and texture. Bread in the basket was super fresh and just perfectly crunchy. For main dishes I ordered the fish lasagna (omg the best lasagna I have ever eaten in my whole life ). Order it! It is life changing. Think you know what a lasagna should taste like? No you don't until you eat this. Wow. Mind blown. My bf had the house gnocchi which can had a tasty sauce and great texture. For seconds he ordered the fish of the day. Tip: get it whole, don't get a filet. The whole fish has all the flavors in it and the crunchy skin and tail and cheeks. Insanely tasty. And you get to eat a whole fish. With head and all. It tasted heavenly. Get the fish! Plus the house wine was amazing too and went perfectly with our fishy dishes. Prices are affordable and food is out of this world. The whole time we were there we were the only tourists everyone else was Italian. I would return here in a heartbeat and suggest this place to anyone who wants to try authentic Amazing Italian food in Trieste. What a find!!! Skip all the other places. Go here now!

We got there around 6:45 and the food wasn't served until 7 pm but all the tables were filled?!? It appears to be customary at the end of the day to meet and have a drink or two before heading out. People literally sit at the table for 1 hour with one drink, talking; no pressure from servers bec they don't live off tips! So we decided "while In Trieste..join them" we ordered drinks, a plate of local meats for an app and people watch...very European. Later we ordered "prawns and tagliatelle ", I had "chic with roasted olives/tomatoes ", dessert-apple strudel.

The pizza was one of the best Neapolitan style pizza I've ever had. The crust was the right amount of cooked without being burnt and there's just enough toppings on the pizza without the crust being soggy. The servers were friendly and attentive and our meal was paced properly. They did charge a one euro cover per person, which we thought was very reasonable. Considering earlier for lunch we went to a restaurant that charged 2 euros per person.
