Massive selection! I learned today that Buffalo Exchange moved out of Minneapolis due to crime and construction on the former road. They are now located in Saint Paul on Snelling and I'm thrilled as a STP girly. My friend introduced me to the shop after she scored some cowboy boots for a themed party. We visited together on a Sunday and were able to snag some fun deals including a swimming suit, a dress I plan to wear for Halloween, and some tops. Buffalo Exchange sells both men and women's clothing along with shoes and accessories. Pricing is fair and the interior is clean and well organized. The staff is friendly and helps bring items to the dressing room to try on and write your name on a big board. Upon purchase, you will be handed a token if you don't take a bag or bring your own bag. From there, you get to pick a charity of your choice to donate a percentage of your purchase to with no extra fees included. If you're looking for a thrift store experience where employees act like they're curating the next Paris Fashion Week, this is your place. The two girls evaluating my clothes were acting like they work for LV or MiuMiu. It's FINE if my items weren't a fit for inventory, but you don't have to be mean or judgy. I ended up donating everything to a nearby church instead, and the kids there were genuinely thrilled to see my bags of clothes. Stopped by while trying to walk off our ice cream [from Milkjam]. I personally don't like thrift stores because of the overwhelming smells (it's like dust mixed w/ the scent of clothes left in plastic bins too long - I hate that scent so much). As soon as you walk in you definitely can smell it. My mom knew I wouldn't last long so we hardly made it pass the accessories & shoes - which is in the front part of the store. It looked like they had a generally decent inventory of clothes & shoes though. I didn't really look at prices of anything so no comment on that. I visited Buffalo Exchange this previous weekend with a couple friends after another friend recommend it, having got much of her wardrobe from there. Upon walking in, we felt welcomed by the front desk employee and were already in awe of their amazing wardrobe and style! The three of us searched through the many racks, each item in great condition and fairly priced. We all found at least one item we knew our wardrobe needed. We didn't have to wait even a moment at the dressing rooms, there was someone staffing it the entire time, so very kind and helpful! There was an instance where an individual entered with maybe some mental illness or substance use, and the staff handled it wonderfully - ensuring the individual was not forced outside in the cold and handled it professionally (did not see details as a customer but only good interactions and the individual being pleased/responsive and treated very humanly). Just another reason to come back here . I found a couple great items and am already planning to return. I also really liked the bag/ 5 cent token that you can choose a non-profit/cause for. I stopped in the buffalo exchange for the first time recently to sell some clothes and I was really shocked by the experience. I had many items in great condition and from expensive or mid range brands. Only 2 items were bought and I saw another employee telling my buyer to put away several items she had picked out. That's fine, but when I inquired about what kind of items they purchase, that other employee stated "it's based on style" and could not tell me any brands, sizes, or styles that they look for besides boxy sweaters. They almost seemed annoyed that I asked. I don't know if this was an employee specific issue or management not telling the staff specific things to look for, but it sounds like a couple other people have had issues with staff being rude/ uninviting to them, so hopefully, this gets resolved. Until then, if you want to sell here, just bring boxy sweaters I suppose! read more

I was over the moon when Buffalo Exchange moved into my neighborhood. They do have a nice trendy selection of clothing. It is priced a bit higher than you'd expect, but I found it didn't deter me from purchasing a few one-of-a-kind items. The layout of the store is nice and easy to navigate. The changing rooms are spacious and plentiful, but you may be waiting a bit for someone to assist you in securing one. My complaint is with the staff and their consignment practices. I love that they have a young diverse group of individuals working there. I don't love that they are quite rude. In the three times I've visited the store, I've never felt welcome by any employee nor have I seen any of them smile. It was as if my mere presence was irritating. This isn't why I've given them two stars. I chose to post this review to caution those selling or exchanging clothing to remain at the counter while they examine and consider your items for resale. I brought several items and left them at the front so I could shop while they looked at my clothing. After 20 minutes, they selected one piece. I'm totally fine with that! I was a little bummed they didn't want more of my stuff, but they know what they sell, and I have no complaints. Maybe my clothing doesn't meet their aesthetic? No big deal. The issue I have is that when I returned home to examine the clothing they declined, there were three! different items that were missing, not including the one they purchased from me. I think this might be a common occurrence. I'm sure they think that these clothes are just heaped into the donation pile when they are rejected, and therefore it goes unnoticed when they stash away items that they will sell, but won't pay you for. So, if you are planning to sell or trade, make sure you are present when they evaluate your clothes. read more

This place is so much better than Plato's Closet! From a buyer's perspective, staff know what good quality and trendy clothing is. They are great at knowing what is valuable and fashionable, and I've always gotten great cash every time I come in to sell! they also take the time to review each item with you on why they do or don't take it and how much they would price an item they do take. I usually make around $80 each time I go! I also appreciate how kind and personable everyone is! It's nice to be in a more progressive store and I always feel so welcome. I love going here as a buyer and seller. Their inventory always has nice pieces and you can score some unique vintage finds! Couldn't recommend this place enough. read more

The associate (Jaylen??) was super helpful and funny, making the process a lot more enjoyable. This place is super cute! I appreciate any thrift shop that actually sells women's clothes in large, x-large, and a few beyond. Overall there were a lot of options for all gender expressions in clothes, shoes, and jewelry - plus random stuff. Note that they are a "bag-free" store. You either must buy your own reusable $2 tote bag OR don't buy a bag at all (or bring your own) and they donate 5 cents to one of three charities (your choice). A cool idea! A bummer for me since I didn't know this and had a long walk back to my hotel, so I had to buy a bag. It is at least a cute bag tho - has their logo with the little buffalo on it. read more

I was just in yesterday & they happened to have a power outage & the manager politely called me to let me know if i wanted to reschedule my existing appointment. Buffalo exchange has gone down over the last couple of years. It used to be a really cool place that carried unique clothing and shoes but sadly has started to get very desaturated. Now must of the stuff in there is very mainstream clothing. It's has really started to look like a goodwill instead of a resale shop. I still go in all the time to look for cool pieces but usually leave empty-handed. Very sad but I would not recommend this place anymore. We drove almost 30 Minutes and I was my Jordan defys which and custom Jeans and other clothes all in good condition clean and folded nicely and a few designer pieces and they only offered me $17 and wouldn't take the shoes cause there was no tag on the inside of the shoe because this design doesn't come with one I was so irritated and won't be coming back. read more

I was in for about 30 minutes checking out all the different pricing and I just really feel everything is overpriced and underwhelming. Poshmark or eBay is your best best. Believe me. This is a genius business model. Only buy week old in style clothes for a fraction of the price, and sell for regular retail price = make a bunch of money. I'm about to do this same shit and call it Veexchange. I've been here to browse and prices are ridiculous. You'll get the same thing brand new at a regular retail shop, which will also smell much better. Don't bother bringing clothes here unless you just bought it yesterday and can't return it. As a resident of San Diego for 4 years and living the East bay for countless more, I grew to love the Buffalo Exchange. It is the type of used clothing store that you would expect in any respectably hip metro area. Why? There are only two important factors: buying & selling. BUYING: Kudos to the buyers for carrying such a great variety of clothing. Unlike other local exchange shops (*ahem Everyday People) they actually will buy your clothes, even if they've never heard of the name brand. At the Buffalo, employees look at more than just the necktag and see if the clothes are cool-looking and/or unique. What a novel concept. As a result, they have all kinds of clothes and accessories to browse through at very decent prices. Cheap shoes, dresses, shirts, skirts, and pants with "urban appeal". I'm not exactly sure what I mean by 'urban appeal' but I think that's what i would call everyday street clothes if i was a clueless suburbanite 30-something lands end shopper. im not. Anything original, anything with a sweet pattern, anything vintage, anything that looks like a standout item--you can find it here. Also here are some fancier pieces you can dress up for a night out. The store itself is also colorful, appealing, and not cramped so you dont have to wade through seas of cloth just to reach the back. SELLING: Never EVER EVER EVER since moving to the Twin Cities have I gotten a good deal selling clothes back. Especially not in Uptown. Never. And yet, just last week I went to Buffalo Exchange and made over $60 cash. The pay is immensely better here whether you want store credit or cash. I cant count how many bags of interesting clothing in good condition I have dumped at Saver's or Goodwill because no other wannabe 'exchange' shop would pay anything for them. Obviously, this is why they all have such shitty selection--they dont know good stuff when they see it. Instead, they prefer to fill their racks with ugly, ill-fitting, arbitrary shit because it has a yuppy-ass name brand on it and could have been purchased at the Southdale Mall sometime in the last 2 years. In fact, I went to my nemesis Everyday People the other day and they had the same exact clothing that I browsed through LAST MONTH. One entire month goes by and I see the same shirts, dresses, purses and shoes hanging around on the racks. Maybe they have the impression that their job is to run a clothing museum? Buffalo on the other hand carries everything that you think is cool. Dont bother brining in anything "iffy" or faded and delude yourself into thinking you might sneak it past them. They wont buy it. They have a good eye. But if you brought some amazing knitted sweater that has been passed over at EP five times even though it's vintage designer and one-of-a-kind, they will actually buy it because they think it's cool too. They are less snobby here and frankly, they dress better. That's how you can tell. So you can see that I'm pretty juiced about the new Minneapolis Buffalo Exchange. You should be too. I love perusing the clothes and accessories at this store - I have to say this is one of the trendier consignment shops that I've been to; many times I find clothes at other stores that are outdated enough to not be in style, not old enough to be brought back or "vintage." The dressing rooms are great, they always have a large variety of shoes in different sizes, and most items on the rack are in close to perfect condition or gently used (and I mean gently, not faded to a sorry state). I like the added bonus of donating to a local charity in lieu of a shopping bag, and the staff are always on hand if I needed. read more

Guy who checked us out charged us multiple times for one item after assessing the items my boyfriend chose to purchase, saying "you don't look like a small.. are you sure you want to buy this? You should be buying things in bigger sizes. I'm just saying. You look like a large." WHO CARES!? Not the cashiers responsibility to question and assess what the customer is choosing to buy, let alone what size they are. Do you want us to shop here or not?? I told my boyfriend to just return everything right after buying but they just refunded the "mistake" they made and gave us coupons. They took 6 items that were lululemon and free people and I got 22 dollars. Was pretty disappointed honestly! You can chose to take 50% of what the sell it for to use in the store or you can chose 30% cash. I have absolutely nothing against buying stuff from here but personally the reason I bringing clothes in, is to get cash. So getting 22 dollars for lulu leggings, shirts, tanks, and free people shirts that cost over 100 each initially, was a bummer and not really worth it, I'll go somewhere else next time. read more

Buffalo Exchange is in a perfect location in Uptown, Minneapolis right on Lyndale. Given the populations of artists, young professionals, hipsters, creative bohemians and students, this is right up there alley. Aside from the warm staff and well laid out clothing line (second hand consignment clothes), there are limitations and most of that falls under the category of male. If you are looking for anything dressy (pants or shirts), this is not the place. If you need costume type of clothes, perfect. Shoes are limited. As you know the inventory changes often. If I were a female, I would lean on a 4 rating. As a guy, I have to go with a 3 with the emphasis on selection. read more

There are a lot of positive things going on at Buffalo Exchange, number one on my list being a great selection of women's items (clothing, shoes, and accessories). Everything is laid out nicely so it's easy to find what you're looking for right away, which helps if you just want to pop in for a quick visit. I like the variety of unique items they have available and only wish they had more of that. The other thing that's really high on my list of positive things is the customer service. The people I've interacted with have always been friendly and knowledgeable about what's on-hand and they're helpful if you need a second opinion or a suggestion. This is definitely a unique (and much appreciated!) experience for a consignment store. During a recent trip, I was looking for business casual and weekend wear stuff and I found a lot of great denim and casual tops, but I struggled with the work attire. Most of the dress pants and tops were things I could get new at a Target or H&M for the same price as at Buffalo Exchange. The denim is usually priced well IMO, but everything else can be a little hit-or-miss. read more

I'm feeling all mixed up about Buffalo Exchange in Uptown. I've never tried selling anything at the Buff, so my experience is just as a shopper. Many thrift stores are hit or miss, but this one in particular. I find it well-organized and really have found some cool things before, but the majority of the clothes at Buffalo Exchange seem like T.J. Maxx's leftovers. I'm not saying that to be harsh (I love T.J. Maxx!), but it's a lot of things that are overly trendy ("so last year," you might say) or of questionable quality (polyester is involved). I bought a pretty skirt there last summer for $20 and the zipper was broken before I even wore it (they took it back and I got store credit... which I still haven't spent, actually). It is still a step up from Ragstock when it comes to their new clothes, but the used clothes tend to---again---be hit or miss. It's also oddly overpriced for some merchandise, but not for all. Por ejemplo, I found a gorgeous hand-painted vintage summer dress, and a really unique raw silk dress there for about $6 each too (*solo fist pump*). On the other hand, if I wanted a Forever 21 tank top, I'd probably just buy it for $6.99 at Forever 21 instead of $6 here. What gives, Buffy? When all is said, I'll keep shopping at Buffalo Exchange because I'm addicted to thrifting and sometimes I don't mind digging through a bunch of poorly priced American Eagle tops. I'm overdue to walk out with something spectacular from here---and I have that store credit to spend, after all! Coming from LA, where there were BE's everywhere, this place was a let down. The selection is lack luster to say the least and the prices are comical. My friend and I literally found clothes we purchased at GAP, Banana Republic, etc... for less than HALF the prices they were asking. Mind you the clothes are used and yet they are more expensive.
