I stopped in with a party of four for lunch on a Friday afternoon. The attendant quickly pointed out that the menu on the wall is outdated. All good! We made the quick transition to laminated menus. They seemed to have a pretty good choice with diverse menu items. The food came out pretty quickly and tasted great. It seems to be a local favorite - the place was packed when we left around 12:30. There aren't a lot of choices in Plains, but turns out this one is ok! read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place. The food is all homemade in house and delicious, the people are incredibly kind, and the prices are so low! We also learned that the cafe is NOT FOR PROFIT! It is run completely by volunteers and proceeds support the Friends of Jimmy Carter charitable foundation. We were greeted with true southern hospitality. The volunteers we met were very helpful regarding ingredients etc due to allergies of some in our group. All of the food we ordered was amazing and the meals come with little corn muffins AND little brownie bites! Adorable and delicious. There was a variety of menu options and daily specials including desserts and soups. We really enjoyed the town of Plains in general, but this was by far our favorite part! The man at the register was SO abrupt and curt. Seriously, there were like five times during my ordering transaction when he was snarky and short, and seemed as if he was put out to be talking to me. Is it because the Buffalo Cafe is only restaurant in town?? This was certainly NOT southern hospitality!! Additionally, their hours are abbreviated (11-2) and the menu was very limited. Don't blink when rolling through downtown Plains - or you might miss this quaint little town - made remarkable on maps because it is the lifelong home of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, and many members of their extended family, including Billy (yes, of the infamous Bulky Beer) and his children and grandchildren. While there are only a handful of shops and options for eating, and the only place to stay is the (amazing) Plains Inn - this little historic place is filled with small town charm and education and information (and incredible peanut butter ice cream) - and the celebration of community that makes small towns in America such nifty places. Anytime I am able to visit Plains, I eat at the Old Bank | Buffalo Cafe. The food is simple but great. The prices are fair, the portions are adequate, and the staff is friendly and helpful. The patty melt is great. The fries are crispy. The salad fresh. The chicken salad well seasoned. And they have nifty offerings that even include fried pickles. Charming luncheon cafe with excellent food and wonderful, warm staff. After the first time, I felt like a local - welcomed as if they knew us. Everything is tasty - but I highly recommend the fried chicken sandwich and the BLT. The corn nuggets were also ver good. A super nice place! read more

One of the few restaurants we could find in Plains, Georgia, the place was lovely regardless, comfortable, and with the walls dedicated to celebrating the hometown hero that put Plains on the map, President Jimmy Carter. In fact, if you're in town to visit the various historic sites around town dedicated to the life and legacy of President Carter, the restaurant is located almost a very brief walk from the small walkthrough museum concerning the presidential campaign, built in its former headquarters. As for the service, it was very courteous, and the server took his time to check up on us and promptly bring us our food, even with them being relatively busy at the time. As for the food itself, it was excellent! I had the Southern Burger, which was delicious, and my father and I ordered a side of Fried Green Tomatoes. My father loves those, and he said these were some of the best Fried Green Tomatoes he'd ever eaten. I would have to agree! As one final note, the restaurant is actually a non-profit that uses its revenue to support the local community and help the Park Service with the upkeep of the museums and historical sites. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a nice bite of delicious Southern food while in Plains, Georgia! read more

We stopped by at 11:30 am on Friday, December 3 to grab a bite to eat. Based on other reviews it was touted as a great place for lunch. Apparently the SAM train was scheduled to come in at noon. Staff was in complete panic mode. The " train" menu was being used, basically a very limited menu. We had the shredded pork sandwich. Only pork on a dinky bun. No pickles or anything else. If I was a third grader it might have been ok, but not for an adult. They weren't friendly and it took forever to get the food and the train wasn't even there yet. When the train did come, only about a dozen people got off and came to the main street. The rest was a couple hundred elementary school kids and they brought their own lunch and stayed by the train depot to eat. My advice is to stay away on train day. Will maybe try again on another day. read more

Tim at Buffalo Cafe was so rude today!!!!! It all started with a phone call. We were on a train ride, and instructed to call the cafe before arrival. He was very unprofessional, and rushed us off the phone. As we wait in line, a child accidentally spills a drink, and TIM loses his SH*T!!!! Literally. His actions and words in front of everyone was disgusting! Hollering and causing a scene. Couldn't have been my child, bc his a*s would've been cussed to Eastman, and back to Plains. I understand there was a large crowd today, and it was probably frustrating getting these students and locals, in and out. There was no reason for his words, and actions. He stated to someone, "I can't wait for these kids to get the h*ll on" Definitely not how you should treat paying customers, supporting your small business, and helping pay your bills. His actions seemed very abusive, and I don't like that AT ALL!!!!! Stood in line. Menu on wall clear as day. Got up to register was asked in or take out I say in. He said their only doing take out orders first (weird) should go in order. Then I order and he says they don't have that menu the big ones on the wall. Hands me a paper says, you didn't see it??! No I didn't see the random papers laying around. Asks me to move over. I'm like huh? I said I'm gonna go somewhere else. He proceeds to say "there isn't anywhere else" sir that's not how you earn business and the ONLY reason you're in business is because there isn't anything else around. I live in Plains so I eat here pretty regularly, and it's always good. When the train comes there's a bunch of tourists that ask stupid questions but other than that it's great. No shade to tourist tho. Lol I recommend the chicken chunk. read more

Nice atmosphere. This place is a tribute to the Plains High School baseball team. The waitress was very friendly. The menu consisted of soup and sandwiches. You can find burgers, pimento cheese sandwiches, club sandwiches, fries, fried green beans. I had the club sandwich. Everyone else had a burger and fries. The food was great, and reasonable. The train was late arriving to Plains, so our time was greatly limited. This restaurant was perfect for us. The food was good, and the service was fast and pleasant. Stopped in town to see President Carter's memorabilia and decided to stay for lunch rather than driving to Americas GA. Food was prepared well and tasty with ample portions. We went to see the jimmy carter national historic site in plains, ga. This was the only place open so that's where we dined for lunch. The service was excellent but we were the only patrons there. Our server was very friendly. The food is ok but the prices are amazing reasonable. The one thing we really enjoyed is the deep fried green beans. Didn't even taste like green beans. This is a tweener (3.5 stars). Service, value and green beans make me round up to a 4 star. read more

We stumbled upon this place after touring Jimmy Carter's boyhood home a couple of weeks ago. What a great lunch we had for under $10 - it felt as if we were back in our hometowns of 40 years ago, not only because of the reasonable prices, but for the endearing tributes to Plains High School. The food is simple but delicious, the service wonderful, and we both feel that this is a real gem of a place for anyone to stop and get a bite to eat. If it hadn't been for Jimmy Carter, we never would have found it - I can see why he liked growing up in Plains, GA. Thanks for being there for two hungry, out of state travelers! read more
