Wow! From the homemade Deer Camp hot sauces they have (which I think is the bees knees, especially the Over/Under Apple Cranberry) to the freshly prepared food and even the chips and salsa. There was not one thing that I could of wished had been different. I ordered a house margarita and their lunch special burrito. They both were fantastic. You can taste the freshness of the food and it's definitely not frozen or microwaved. Service was perfect. I came after the lunch rush so the place was empty. This was our second time here, both times bad service and just ok food. We waited a long time for our table while several parties that arrived after us were seated first. We were told it was because these people had a reservation, but later found out that they don't take reservations. The waitstaff was generally overworked and it showed in their attitude. So good!!!! Of course not authentic Mexican in the California taco-stand kind of way, but this place is really good! Margaritas are really tasty. You must try a flavored margarita (blueberry if it's the season) or the sangria (goes down too easily). Chips and salsa are free. They have a ton of different salsas, all very good. Be careful or you WILL fill up on chips and salsa before you even order entrees! All of the entrees I've had here are good. My main go-to is the fajitas, either chicken or steak. My boyfriend always gets the rib-eye, which is always cooked perfectly (medium-rare for us) and is a huge portion. Others worth trying are the chimichangas and the chicken curry burrito (if you are in for something fusion-y). The only things I didn't love were the nachos (covered in iceberg lettuce) or the pulled pork tostada (BBQ sauce is NOT Mexican!). Also try the Mexican chocolate dessert - yummmmmm. read more

I will preface this, like I preface any review of a Mexican restaurant, that I'm not a big fan of Mexican food in general. The staff at Buen Apetito were kind enough to open a couple of hours early for our event-- the retirement party of our department director-- and were attentive to our needs. Drinks were made quickly (and potent!). I got the classic margarita (extra salt. Always extra salt) and it tasted excellent. I did struggle with the menu, and finally decided on the chicken enchiladas verde, since I do like verde sauce. They were tasty and not too spicy, and very filling. The guacamole that our director shared with the table was... bland. I am a harsh judge of guacamole and few live up to my expectations. The salsa on the table was tasty and not too hot, and whatever the green stuff on the table was was good too. Best Mexican food around! The setting inside is cozy and quaint but once you sit down and enjoy your dining experience it doesn't matter if you're in a jam-packed room or not. The waiting area is a bit cramped but the service is quick so you usually don't have to wait for more than 20 minutes or so on a busy night. Chips and salsa are free and the margaritas are pretty darn good (and strong). They also make some homemade sauces to go with chips that are really good. I usually have the chicken quesadilla and it's enough for dinner and lunch the next day. My kids can always find something that they like, and my son had the guacamole burger the last time he went (minus the guacamole) and the people at the next table commented on how good it looked! He loved it and could only eat half of it because it was so big. The wait staff is always nice and helpful - you can't go wrong if you decide to give this place a try. We have been eating here since it began when it was basically in a closet. The Laplante's have kept it authentic, fresh and truly enjoyable for years. We stopped in for lunch at Buen Apetito on our way home from Bar Harbor. What a treat we had! By far the best Mexican restaurant we have dined at. The decor is charming and tastefully appointed with hand painted accents and comfortable booths and tables. The bar is perfect for a margarita before dinner or to relax and enjoy your entree at. The servers are very friendly and most attentive. The drinks are made with fresh ingredients and I had the hand shaken margarita which was delicious. My husband ordered the Carne Asada, which was the best he ever had. They use ribeye steak which was cooked to perfection and will melt in your mouth. The dish was accompanied with an over abundance of fresh vegetables, rice and beans. I had the beef taco which was filled with chunks of juicy steak. Looking forward to our next trip to the area so we can dine at Buen Apetito again. read more

This is one of those places that you have to try to find...and then you are glad that you did. We live in the area and even we had to look for it the first time we went...but boy am I glad we found it! I've lived in Southern California and spent time in Mexico and no, this is not "authentic" mexican cuisine but that does not mean it's not yummy! We've been going there every couple of months for years now and have only had one bad experience. The chimichangas are one of my favorites and about a year ago I ordered them and they seemed like the same old delicious chimis...at first...as I got near the center, I realized that it was still slightly frozen in the middle. This shattered my illusion that all of the food is made fresh to order...not saying it's not made on site but I'd say they were making them and popping them in the freezer. :-( So I sent it back and the next one was the same: golden and delicious on the outside, frozen in the middle. I gave up and concentrated on my Margarita (yummy with a kick!) and took several bites of my wife's burrito grande which was delicious. Every time before and every time since has been exceptional. Oh yeah, one more thing. If you have a choice, don't sit too close to the door. The room is very small and folks waiting for a table will "LITERALLY" be standing RIGHT behind you as you sit and eat your meal, watching and waiting for you to finish eating so they can sit down. Very disappointing. The food was cold yet on a super extreme HOT plate. The chorizo was burnt on a taco which was laid out flat with way too much lettuce and tomato. The sauces are good but they put too much on which overwhelms the food. The waitress had no personality. We were displeased, she knew it and offered no hot food. We did not stay for our normal desserts and cocktail. I have to say we have been there many many times (2X monthly, for a couple years) times before, have had great food and service but over the past 6 moths it has gotten worse and worse. My friends and I went an hour and a half before the restaurant closed, but that should not of change our experience. Our chips and dip were not good, the chips were left out on tables before people were seated, which meant cold stale tortilla chips(they were taken home and made into crow food). Our food tasted old, the meat was dry, over cooked, I could taste the deep fried oil and no one wanted to eat their left overs. I noticed the head waitress or manager was watching each table like a hawk, I didn't feel like I had time to eat. I felt even more rushed when they turned the music off 20 minutes before close. The restaurant was in silence with bland old food, with hawk waitress lingering. I've lived in LA for 10 years. And this is still my favorite Mexican restaurant! Shredded beef tacos and green salsa all day everyday.

Honestly, the service is better at Subway than at this place. And the food is just average.

Food was less than sub-par, I ordered the shredded beef tacos....bad choice. The meat was flavorless, the corn tortillas were wet and soggy, I couldn't even pick the taco up without everything falling out of the bottom. There was way too much lettuce on top and the tomatoes were old. I had two bites and refused to finish because it was so bad. Pushed my full plate of food to the end of the table and of the three different servers that came over no one asked what was wrong. My check was not comped even though I didn't want a box and left a full meal there to be thrown away. I understand this is Maine and not Central America but the food is a far cry from being " Mexican" cuisine. I will never visit this establishment again and I suggest you do the same. read more

The food is consistently great! There is always a wait in the evenings but well worth it. I always get tacos with flour tortillas. Best tacos ANYWHERE. Other reviewers are right, the waiting area and bar can get crowded, but the service is fast and the food is served quickly allowing the estimated wait times to usually be quite shorter than estimated. I felt compelled to write this review because last night the bartender was extremely busy, looked a little frazzled for a moment, but got over the hump and delivered great drinks with a great attitude!
