This park has two amazing things that you rarely see in any public park.
(1) They have a free, public archery range. This is a surprisingly well maintained range as well and is almost always open. I was actually taught how to shoot an arrow here, and it made my life in high school gym must less miserable. You can make reservations to insure that the place will be free, but I have never seen it any other way. Just to be safe, call or stop by the ranger station.
(2) They have a HUGE remote control air field. I know this sounds incredibly dorky, but I think it's awesome that the St. Louis County Parks System has created a park for people that build remote control airplanes and who want to fly them. My grandpa was a huge fan of remote control airplanes and he spent many many years flying the planes he built at this field. I went with him many times and it was always a blast. It's also a great place to just watch the old men and young kids fly their remote control planes...no seriously, it's entertaining. Just a forewarning: they often have a ton of loose golf balls on the field from people practicing their drives in the open space. Don't fall on any of them...I've actually seen this happen.
It's a nice park to have a picnic, fly a kite, or just hang out. There's not a lot of action going on, but sometimes open space is nice. I have a soft spot for this park and always will. read more
