This is the true of the beaten path bar that just screams Colorado. We ably found it as a bartender at another bar told us about this little gem. It seems to be such a secret that it's mostly locals, which can't be bad. We didn't eat anything on this trip but will be back. If you looking a "dive" bar in nature this is it. If you're looking for a really good hamburger, and I'm an aficionado of hamburgers, DO NOT go to The Buck Snort Saloon in Sphinx Park unless you like your burger well done...and even then?!?! The original Buck Snort used to have great burgers...worth the drive and the atmosphere. I was really looking forward to it. They refused to make my burger medium rare. They said that the county would close them down. I've had rare to MR burgers all over Jeffco. It's also described on the menu as 1/2 pound. I make 1/3 pound burgers at home that are bigger than the ones my husband and our friend ordered. Of course theirs were well done. Maybe they use high fat beef and have to cook them longer for the fat to cook out before serving, and that's why you can't get them on the rarer side? We took our neighbors there since they'd never been and I thought Fred would buy a Buck Snort Saloon in Sphinx Park, CO and they didn't even have those! This establishment was always a welcoming and unique saloon. It had a rustic charm that I frequented back in 1977-78...thanks to the exotic cigarettes I smoked during that time, I'm not entirely sure. But I do recall the barrels of peanuts and the tradition of tossing peanut shells on the floor. I also remember Buck, the owner's lovable and friendly dog, as well as the towering half-pound burgers that were juicy and incredibly delicious. I wish I could turn back time and revisit those days. We stumbled across this little dive bar last fall while on a road trip through the mountains and decided to check it out. Walking into this spot is like traveling back hundreds of years. The floor of the entrance is slanted towards the river, the walls are covered with graffiti and stapled-on dollar bills, and the only source of heat comes from a wood burning stove located in the center of the dining area. We ordered a Moose Drool and an Antler Ale from the lovely bartender and sat next to the stove, trying to thaw out. The fantastic aroma of the burning wood filled the bar, mingling with the delicious scent of freshly cooked burgers. While we didn't eat anything this time, the burger that came out of the kitchen was mountainous and made us wish we hadn't had lunch right before. We chatted with the locals who had wandered across the street for a mid-afternoon happy hour while the bartender stoked the fire, and sipped our icy cold brews, enjoying the camaraderie and friendliness of the small town before continuing on our trip. You don't come to the Bucksnort for the food. Its above average bar food, but thats about it. You come here because you're either lost in the mountains, got a tip from a biker friend, or you're Miner 49er from Scooby-Doo Doo and came to life. Its damn hard to get to, but worth it. Nicest damn staff anywhere. Best scenery along a trout stream, tucked in a tight mountain valley. And, a cool factor thats off the charts. My adult kids wanted to go to a winery and I convinced them to check out the Bucksnort instead. 1 minute after walking in they both said, "Okay I get it. This is the coolest bar ever." The wife and I went on a wild adventure through the rainy Colorado mountains and crazy muddy dirt road on the Harley to get to this one of kind saloon last week. This is a quaint little, old school, mom and pop type saloon! There are literally hundreds of dollar bills blowing in the breeze attached to the walls and ceilings sign by different people from all over the world. They had live music, and a small outdoor patio. The drive to get up to the saloon is a well graded dirt road which is easily drivable by all vehicles. I would however be careful heading up there in the rain, I'm sure it would be rather muddy. I had a fantastic Bloody Mary that looked more like a salad. It had just the right amount of spice to give it some kick and it went down real smooth. The cheese burgers were homemade outside on the grill; we watched the owner cooking while we sat outside. The service was a little slow and chaotic due to the number of patrons and limited amount of staff. The saloon sits right along a small creek and has a nice view of the surrounding mountains. This is definitely a great place to take a small road trip on a weekend afternoon to see some great scenery and lounge the afternoon away. read more

I do NOT understand how this place has such a low overall review rating. This is a dive bar up in the mountains...it is AWESOME. It is EXACTLY what you hope it to be... down-home, grungy, unpretentious divey fun. They have a dirt parking lot, a small merch store, two bathrooms, a wooden bar, and dining area with space for live music bands. In the back, they have a patio that overlooks a creek. Very quaint, mountain-y feel. It was about an hour from Denver, so we did it for lunch and then headed over to Red Rock Amphitheater and teh cities of Golden and Boulder and then back to Denver - great excursion if you have a rental for the day! Our waitress/bartender was working her buns off to get everyone served as quickly as possible and she knows how to hustle and still be friendly and engaging (now, I wish I caught her name, but I added a picture of her)! When we were there on 8/9/20, Justin Hitson was there playing unannounced while he was on vacation - WOW! He is amazing and made the entire little cabin rock! We ate some AMAZING elk jalapeno brats (highly recommend that or the brisket sandwich), added our personalized dollar to the ceiling, paid our tab, made a bathroom pitstop, and left the dusty dirt parking lot just as a big group of bikers came in and were told it was an hour wait for food at that point (good timing on our part!). But if you want a place where you can relax by a cast iron wood stove, in a place with a lot of character, friendly service, and have a few beers then this is a great place to visit. The night we went they had a beef stew in a crusty bread bowl, burgers, and an elk or beer brat on the menu. We had the beef stew (which was to die for) and the burgers that were solid. The drive was beautiful! The place was pretty cool with all the dollar bills all over. Neat, small patio with nice view. Ordered a Bucksnort burger with the works, took almost a hr to get, came to me almost completely raw! Took a bite of it and spit it out in my napkin. The waitress saw and asked if everything was okay. I sent it back, was wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too raw to eat. 10 min later she gives me the SAME burger back to me with my bite marks in it!! WTF!?? Pretty sure that's a health code violation. Service was extremely slow, I felt like we were more of a nuisance than a customer. The older women were slow and pissy. Beers are $4, burger $13. This place is a cool little hole in the wall pub in an old log cabin type structure. We hit it up on our way from Denver to Salida. There are signed dollar bills pasted all over the walls. There is a great patio overlooking the river. Dank and dreary inside. Great burgers. Confused yet? Me too. I don't really get it but it's a cool atmosphere. Waitress was super nice. Burgers were juicy and flavorful. Burrito looked tasty, smothered in chili of sorts. Baked potato was tasty. No fries? Epic fail. Nachos were a waste. Beer selection is OK. The drive here is incredibly beautiful, the Bucksnort itself is a relic. This is a genuine shithole that's been through it. Everything is carved, the taxidermy is falling apart, the service sucks, and the experience is amazing. Roll up, order a drink. If it's nice, find a place out back on the patio overlooking the river. SO PRETTY, right? Aren't you glad you came up here? Now take a sip of that beer. It tastes better when you're here somehow. Inside, there are dollars all over the wall. If you need a unique mountain experience where mostly only the locals know about you need to go to this 100 year old bar in a lost mountain canyon 40 miles from downtown Denver. Passing by cabins built into the cliffs, a clear mountain stream and this hide out bar shows up. Step in for a cold beer and an elk brat. Dog running loose in the place. 4 yr old little girl in soaking wet clothes bc she was in kitchen washing dishes running around jumping on customers. Grabbed my daughter in laws purpose slung it around and stuff fell out. Little boy climbed Christmas tree and tree fell in floor beside our table. A true shit show to say the least. This is a dive bar not a daycare or a dog kennel. Food was more than terrible. After seeing dog come out of kitchen and and knowing dishes are being washed by a 4 year old some in our decided they were not hungry. After getting food not being hungry was the best choice. It came well-done. VERY well-done. And completely dried out. For sautéed mushrooms and bacon, $1.95 each. Okay. But 3 sautéed mushroom slices and 1 extremely thin rasher of bacon. Getting there is a lot of the allure of this bar. However, once you are at the location, there is a lot of charm to this ramshackle building that is on stilts by the river. It leans, it's knotty, and maybe even a little naughty. There is a selection of patrons that don't quite mesh, but they all have one thing in common. EVERYONE there needs a shower and a cold beer. Be it a long journey on a bike, a kayak trip, bicycling...whatever... the patrons stink, but in that "wow that was really awesome!" way. Yes, there are different kinds of BO. There is the "I sleep in the park and pee in my pants" BO. There is the "I hate going to the dry cleaner and this is my only cool shirt for the clubs" BO. There is the "my cologne will cover my funk" BO. Then there is the "I showered this morning I SWEAR, but I just had a lot of fun!" BO. That's what you will find here. Enough about BO. Get over it, and get a cold beer, because they don't have showers at Bucksnort. After a few drinks you won't care - you will revel in it. Then have a juicy burger and chill out a little more. 2 stars because the staff is very nice and I like the quirky place. But the food was not good. There were several things about this visit that were weird but workable...but the food.... I ordered pulled pork and a bag of chips. The pork was served lukewarm swimming in fat and grease. The grease was congealed to the pork in parts and pooling in the bottom of the basket....my pickles were swimming in it. To say the bottom bun was soggy is an understatement. The whole thing was difficult to eat. But the people were nice so I chose not to complain, one of the ladies said she smoked the pork herself. I'd recommend they reheat their pulled pork by throwing it on a griddle to get that grease sizzling and maybe crisp up some of the pork so it's not a cold, sloppy, soggy mess. Or dont...I wont risk ordering it again. The best part of the meal was the chips. Might be back just because it's an interesting excursion but I will avoid the pork. read more

I totally agree with the other reviewer, the Bucksnort is an experience. It looks somewhat like a hunting camp. Located in the middle of nowhere, made of old logs. Its dirty, rough, and not for the fancy patron. Burgers are big and juicy. Limited menu, as I think this place has no dishwasher or running water. Everyone carves their name in the logs, or writes that they "were here". Good beer here. read more

Everyone says they like dive bars, myself included. But usually we mean bars that are suitable for the common man, serving simple fare and wallet-friendly drinks. In other words, low-brow but serviceable. This is not that place. Ignore the provincial sentiment that this is a slice of "The Real Colorado" or a true locals' hidden gem. It is a terrible place, for all the reasons others have mentioned. Everything sucks, including the depressing view of a neighboring shanty from the rickety back patio. Hopefully the creek below will jump its banks and sweep this poop-shack out of existence. This is a dive bar in the filthy, depressing uncool sense of the term. Stay away. read more

Call before you go. We've now driven out from Denver 3 different times this year, only to have them be closed during hours the website says they're open. Disappointing, but at least it's a pretty drive. The Zoka restaurant down the road from them wasn't bad, so at least it wasn't a total waste. I've now gone to the Buck Snort Saloon twice, having terrible experiences both times. The first time was about two years ago. My buddy and I came in for burgers after fly fishing and were quite hungry. We ordered the "1/2 lb delicious, juicy burger, overflowing with all the goods" or something like that. What we got was a dry, dollar-coin sized hunk burned ground beef which made the plain bun look huge. All of this wonderfulness for the stunning price of $12. I tried to convince my two rock climbing partners we should not go back to the BS Saloon after climbing nearby, but they insisted. Once again I entered ravaged with hunger and left sorely disappointed. We sat down at the bar and a 12 year old girl asks us what drinks we wanted. It took them forever to take our food order. We then were surrounded by a group of stumbling drunks who would not leave us alone. By the time our food order was taken, after watching saliva inducing burgers get taken out of the kitchen in front of us, we are informed the kitchen is closed and they can't cook anything for us (at 7pm on a Sunday?). We can order food that doesn't need to be cooked. So our options were a club sandwich, a ham and cheese sandwich, or a bean sprouts and tomato sandwich, all for the amazing price of $12 or $13 each. I order the ham and cheese and a "cup" of baked beans. The other two order the Turkey Club and a baked potato. Ten minutes later, a voice from the kitchen yells, "we only have one potato! What do you guys want to do?" they elected to split the potato and get a cup of beans. When the food was finally delivered, I got my H&C and a tiny plastic condiment cup of baked beans, and my friends got two bean sprouts and tomato sandwiches. "Um, excuse me, we didn't order this. We ordered the club sandwich. " to which was replied, "we didn't have any turkey so we have you that." "we don't want this, we're kind of Carnivores." "I'll add some ham to it for you." The waitress takes the sandwiches back and 10 minutes later brings out the same sandwiches with 1 slice of ham added to them. There was no apology for the terrible service or lack of options, no offer to comp our drinks or the sandwiches for the inconvenience or terrible food. Next time I will be more adamant, I'm never going back to the Buck Snort Saloon. read more

The food is amazing! Great way to refuel after a trip to the mountains. The atmosphere is very nice and relaxed, they even have Live music on Saturday night. The only thing I warn against is coming here when hungry or in a rush but the great beer and slowed down atmosphere make it worth the wait! Got the Pulled Pork and boyfriend got the Fire Burger. read more
