The large crowd gathered around the door and in the shop made me do it. Not one but THREE breads and a change in dinner plans to consist of bread, Swiss charcuterie, cheese and wines in the hotel.
A small chain of bakeries established in 1909 that still make all the classic Swiss breads by hand daily.
Zopf AKA braided bread, a Swiss staple for weekend breakfast is outstanding. Think a denser form of brioche with the unmistakable sweet richness of Swiss butter. Soft but with well developed gluten to be perfectly toothsome. Perfect companion to some cooked veal charcuterie. A small 330g loaf for CHF 4.80. You better buy two since one will be devoured before you make it back to the hotel.
Verzascabrot AKA Urdinkel Maggia, a very rustic sour dough bread from Ticino Switzerland with an extremely crisp crust, and large holes throughout. Extremely chewy and very flavorful. The flavor of the yeast and the time given to ferment the dough apparent. Mild salinity. Perfect paired with some air dried Swiss beef and pickles. 500g for 7.00 CHF, a bargain. (Sorry no pics, the crust is so hard and the bread chewy it literally self destructed when I finally managed to pull it apart).
Note: They also offer take away sandwiches made on their amazing breads. None sampled.
German and English spoken.
Very friendly counter service.
Bread, so simple but such an important part of Swiss culture it deserves to be tasted and enjoyed. read more
