Sandra and April are the co-owners of this salon and they will have their official grand opening on the beginning of February. They relocated to this studio in the Mandarin Plaza in Chinatown recently, retaining all their clientele from the previous Silver Lake location. Both are very experienced, highly rated hair stylists and make-up artists with a large client base that include celebrities and high profile public figures. They continue to get much praise, support and recommendations for their great work. One of their ardent supporters and loyal clients is a friend of mine. Private restrooms, for tenants and their guests, are in the plaza. They are clean, safe (can only be accessed with a key) and I like that it is very close to the studio but not actually inside. Popular nearby restaurants on Broadway include Chego!, Howlin' Rays and Yang Chow, which is across the street.

I initially found this salon through Yelp and decided to book with Michael based on some positive reviews. I had hair extensions, color, and highlights done--and in the beginning, he did a great job. I continued to see him over the course of two years, consistently paying high service fees and tipping generously (always 20%). However, things changed during my last visit. I went in for just a touch-up--a simple request for more pronounced "money piece" highlights in the front. I called the salon to express I wasn't satisfied and was told I could come back in for a correction. When I returned, rather than doing just the money pieces, Michael added highlights throughout the top of my head. I'm not a professional, but I can confidently say this overprocessing or whatever he did to my hair severely damaged my hair. I had spent almost two years growing my hair out healthy, with limited processing on the top of my head and it was ruined in one day. He did not fix my hair he ruined it. My hair turned to straw, suffered major breakage and what's worse--I didn't even realize what had happened until it was too late. Despite being there for a correction, I still tipped him $40 because I felt bad. But that was the last time I ever saw him, and I have no plans of ever returning to the salon. The aftermath of that appointment left me so discouraged I didn't go to another hairstylist for several months--until I finally found someone in Pasadena who I now trust with my hair. In addition to the hair damage, I also want to mention some behavior I found unprofessional. Michael would talk about his very young girlfriend, make overly personal comments, and even invited me out for drinks one night there was an event in the building. It made me very uncomfortable, and in hindsight, had he not done a good job with my hair in the beginning, I likely would have stopped going to him sooner. The salon itself is beautiful, clean, and has a lovely atmosphere--I really enjoyed sipping wine while getting my hair done. But sadly, my experience with Michael was extremely disappointing. If you do decide to book with him, I strongly recommend being very clear about what you want, watching closely during the process, and speaking up immediately if something feels off. I'm sharing my story so others don't have to go through the same experience. Trust your instincts--your hair (and your peace of mind) are worth protecting. Just be cautious when using Michael and don't ever complain about his service. He is very revengeful.
