Bianca is an artist. I've been to this location only twice and I'm not sure why. I'm bald but have a beard. Both times I've left feeling so fresh and so clean clean. She takes the time and attention to make me look perfect. I'm especially impressed by how gentle the whole beard trim goes. The process often makes me tighten up like I'm at the dentist, especially shaving around the throat, but she does a through job with almost a feather-touch, to where I'm surprised when I see how much I've been trimmed up. I've been coming here for years. Last week I had a haircut. And as I'm getting my haircut my stylist is sneezing and coughing repeatedly. 2-3 days later I come down with Covid. She mentioned to me she was traveling too. I work from home and rarely leave my home especially that week so the chances of getting sick from somewhere else is not impossible but likely as I didn't really go out that week aside for a hair cut and a jog by myself. I'm frustrated because if your employees are sick don't let them come to work! They just get everyone else sick around them. Pay your employees sick leave so they don't feel the pressure to have to come in and make money. And as an employee don't come in if you're sick or at least test if you have Covid or wear a mask while you cut hair. read more

The barber, Zeke, was 25 minutes late for the appointment and never acknowledged it or apologized. I had a big winter beard going, had a specific idea and showed him a picture of what I wanted: slightly trimmed into a brogue style. He didn't ask a single question while trimming so I assumed he knew what he was doing. He practically shaved the whole thing off. And it was uneven. Had to fix it at home. I was too shocked and annoyed to say anything to him. That's on me. But he didn't seem to care about anything I had to say anyway. The place looked great so I'm bummed. read more

Since March 2020, Covid has turned haircuts into a hot commodity. For a good length of time, salons were closed, then opened, then closed again and now permanently open (albeit with occupancy restrictions). Turns out that hair maintenance was another thing we took for granted and it is quite important for physical and mental well-being. I was quite lucky to not be driven crazy by the desperate need for a haircut as I connected with Covid-safe, barbicide-certified hair stylists that were doing house calls. That's how Fellow Barber came onto my radar. Bear with me and I'll explain the connection... Immediately before salons re-opened; I was transitioning from one house-call stylist to another and came across Wayne. Wayne has a pro Vidal-Sassoon training background and has worked in New York City. He was not only an awesome guy; but his haircut was magnifique and he also worked with my budget. I promised him that I would stick with him instead of returning to my salon even when it opens. I have a pixie haircut and NOT EVERY STYLIST KNOWS HOW TO CUT A PIXIE! But Wayne killed it! Salons reopened which meant that Wayne was no longer doing the Covid-safe house calls. And that is where Fellow Barber comes into the picture. Fellow Barber Shops are based out of NYC and took over all the Rudy's locations in LA after Rudy's shuttered their doors a few years ago. I actually worked as a receptionist for the Studio City Rudy's (they were a shady company with pending law suits and I worked with some horrible ladies but I digress). The point is, I know the deal with this type of barber shop: quick, affordable, sort of run-of-the mill haircuts but still with a hint of artsy flair. Fellow accepts walk-ins but appointments are best. This location of Fellow is located in Highland Park on Figueroa between Ave 56 and Ave 57. Make sure to bring quarters because parking is either street meter parking or the lot in the back which is mostly metered with the exception of some free spots if you can snag them. The shop still has the Rudy's esthetic but there isn't anything wrong with that: high ceiling loft feel, beautiful exposed brick work, wooden beams, cement floors and clean hair stations. One can't complain about how this place looks as it has that downtown city artsy, hipster vibe. I was welcomed by the receptionist whose name I didn't grab but he was very kind and accommodating even personally walking me to the rest room when I asked where it was. Wayne was still working on another client (whom apparently was 15 min late to his appt and a no-show the day before) so my own haircut didn't start until 20 minutes in. That's not a problem - but apparently Fellow has a 30-min cut limit that I was not aware of so I think that is my issues begin. Wayne asked what we were doing and I said to do exactly what he did last time. So I assumed he remembered (he didn't ask for a reminder) and he started at it. Now, I want to admit that I wasn't having a great day and perhaps Wayne wasn't either and so our energies possibly weren't clicking because something felt off. But I hoped for the best because his last cut was so amazing. Being that we started late, his next client had already showed up but Wayne did not rush me - until the end. Wayne handed me a mirror and asked how I feel. It was NOT the epic haircut he gave me last time. I asked him to go shorter and I could feel he was annoyed but he regardless did it. He then asked again and I was NOT pleased: the back had choppy spots and weren't blended well enough. When I said it didn't look right, he literally said, "It's fine." Um no, I AM THE ONE WHO SAYS WHEN IT IS FINE. IT IS MY HAIR, BUDDY. Both ear areas weren't good but I didn't say anything. I was mentioning things and he LITERALLY HUFFED AND PUFFED under his breath! Wayne, did you think I didn't hear that?! This Covid mask doesn't restrict my hearing! What the heck, dude?! I let these thing go and merely had him fix my fringey bangs a little. Long story short, I think he was just crunched for time and took it out on me. I was miserable and felt punched in the stomach because I felt personally offended and didn't like the haircut. It isn't "God awful"; but I had to try to trim it and style it at home in a way that hides the flaws. I should NOT have to do that. Wayne DID give me 20% off (he knows about my financial difficulties as Covid still has me out of work or perhaps he could tell I wasn't happy); which I appreciated. But the combination of his slight unacceptable attitude the poor haircut that doesn't even remotely resemble the kick ass job he did last time; means I will not return to Fellow. I'm so bummed. Side note: Fellow is only accepting card payments but tip payment in cash is fine. Wayne isn't terrible and neither is Fellow which is why I gave the 'average' 3-star rating but I didn't appreciate the experience and thus this was a one-time deal for me. read more

I really used to love coming to this location in Highland Park for my haircuts. I was coming here when it was Rudy's. Unfortunately, the price of $60 plus tip has now pushed a regular haircut to over $70 with tip. There are so many other places in Highland Park the get haircuts for around $25-38. The staff is great and I really wish I could come here regularly. Unfortunately, the price has forced me to find a new place to frequent. Having to get my haircut every 10 days just isn't feasible at Fellow Barber any longer. I guess I'll be back at Floyd's 99 Barber Shop for a $38 haircut. Get the prices back in line with what's available and I'll gladly come back. read more

I don't have a ton of hair and I kind of like shaving it and keeping my beard trimmed myself. Especially because it grows as fast as it does selectively. Meaning that to keep it really clean, I'd need to get it done every ten days or so. Which, at 2022 prices, is kind of a lot to spend. But like many people, as the pandemic--I think--winds down, I was starting to notice what I couldn't accomplish myself: the nuanced beard taper, the pokey hairs behind my ears, an actual taper in the back. So at the drop of a hat, I decided to get a buzzcut and beard trim at Fellow Barber. Caitlyn answered the phone and got me an appointment in two hours' time. They do require a Covid vax card. Bunny, my barber, was fantastic, quite a storyteller and very precise with the clippers. She also told me many of the steps she was hitting along the way as they happened. The cut ended with a scented hot towel on the face. I'm already craving this again. Feels great to have an actual haircut and at a place that makes it easy. I recommend Fellow Barber. And Bunny. Bad Attitudes = Bad Haircuts First, I want to say that I tried to address my poor experience directly with Fellow Barber and have not received a reply. So, this being 2022, my only recourse is to share my experience and hopefully you won't end up with an irreparably bad haircut 3 weeks before your wedding like me. It was a really poor experience for me to have a hairdresser (and not a licensed barber) buzz my hair higher and higher because they can't blend or taper and I just watched in horror as I morphed closer and closer to a Richard Spencer bowl cut... when all I really asked for were the sides trimmed and very effectively communicated all of this through a combination barber-ese and photographs. It's also a really poor experience to feel like the person cutting my hair is simply not listening to me as I squirmed and just wanted the haircut to end before it gets worse... the cherry on top when they tried to spike my hair up at the end like some kind of anime character when I neither a) walked in styled like that or b) showed them any picture that look remotely like that. this is all after being greeted by a highly inconvenienced, perfunctory hostess who could not make it more clear that she didn't want to be there. all while another barber made fun of and mocked the only other customer in the empty shop (gee I wonder why?) who struggled to leave because the shop door is broken... seems like a fire hazard and just bad customer etiquette. So, we're all idiots, right? No one can fix a bad haircut, so joke is on me? the whole experience made me feel like no one ever expected me to come back... so far from the reputation of FSC. TL;DR: the vibe is bad! the haircuts are worse! p.s. the majority of the reviews for this location are from when it was a Rudy's and not from it's current lonely form... but maybe that's the point? I used to get my hair cut here when it was Rudy's. My hair is pretty straightforward when it comes to cutting: short on the sides and back, a little longer on top. My first impression was, "This guy's got his mask around his chin. Cool." My second impression was, "This guy didn't seem to hear what I said I wanted." A pleasant and well done cut and it should be for the price if a guy's hair cut. But, like i said it aint cheap. But they are on time, and make sure you walk out happy with your cut. Ive done 2 cuts with them and they are outstanding, i must say. They don't hide they are not a bargain cut. At the same time, you're treated well and they work to make sure you're completely happy with your cut. They seem to do beards well. (Clean shaven so i dont get the luxury of a cut. My husband made an appointment with one of your stylists for my autistic son and when we were 10 minutes late because of a traffic problem, she came off as seeing him as a nuisance for needing extra time and refused him. Because he tends in the past to ask for more than the usual customer - in time and consultation. I get it. I understand that in your busy world, people need to arrive on time to be worthy of your time. But what gave me insight into your business is how you treat people you perceive as...bothersome. Your stylist told me she scheduled someone exactly 30 minutes after my autistic son in a way that made it seem as though she really didn't want to deal with him unless he exactly met her rules. Yes he probably felt rude to her, but he's on the spectrum and your staff needs to understand and plan for that. We're working on him but your staff needs to be just as patient. I don't think you are. My husband agrees than he and my son no longer need your services. We would rather patronize Bishops in Pasadena (since they accept drop ins and don't treat customers your way). ETA: Also, I don't appreciate how you contacted my husband instead of addressing me directly here on Yelp, since I was the parent that witnessed your stylist's behavior. That said, it definitely cemented all the reasons why the attitude of this place is worth taking our business elsewhere. ETAA: It's highly improbable that my son's stylist, who has known him long enough to see his quirks for not knowing what he wants or wanting to go shorter can't see that he's just a little bit different? She's really rude and you should take the hit that a customer can see that right away. This review is for people on the spectrum so they can avoid your staff since you do not take walk ins or have patience for people on the spectrum. So I've been to this place a handful of times with my brother and each time has been a good experience, everyone there seems nice and friendly with the exception of one barber with blonde hair dressed like a greaser (zeek) or how ever you spell his name. My brother walked in showed him a picture of a mod/shaggy cut. Needless to say that's not what he got. As Im noticing that the cut looks nothing like the picture (it shows on my face) I guess the barber noticed. I had to walk outside to wait because I would have said something to him especially when I noticed him getting irritated and aggressive as I see my brother tell him if he could cut it shorter on the sides, clean up his ears a bit more. As he gets to shaving it with the clippers he's aggressively swiping, making remarks under his breath and at one point telling my brother "oh she just walked out, she's like "I didn't sign up for this." Or how he was saying some smart ass comments to my brother when my brother was trying not to make it a big deal because it wasn't the haircut he asked for. My brother feared that it would make him more irritated that he had to try and salvage it, so he said it looked better. He's right I walked out because I would have said something. Listen, if you ask your client how they like they're cut and they ask you to trim a little more, why get upset and start aggressively cutting the sides? On top of that it seems like he didn't even want to be at work, the minute I walked in I could tell his vibe was off. I think that if you don't know how to cut someone's hair due to their texture or aren't familiar with it maybe go take a few more classes to get you up to date on how to cut Latinos (wavy/curly and thick) texture. Also would recommend maybe working on your passive aggressive attitude. People do pick up on these things and makes your clients not want to go back. I wouldn't recommend that guy to any of my friends, but everyone else seemed cool and looks like they enjoy their jobs. I had not been back since it changed over to the FB. Glad I came back to try the new place. Found an amazing stylist in Shauna. I have short hair but trying to grow it out and had a specific non traditional haircut. I have been to everything from an expensive salons to small salons that don't charge much but I know a good stylist when I encounter them! Shauna is confident with her cutting tools which is a true sign of experience and skill. She did a great job all around technically on my hair and also in making it a pleasant experience. I also like that this salon charges by hair length/cut and not by gender (so discriminatory). Easy street parking and good food nearby. read more

I actually found Fellow on accident. I originally went to another shop down the street and the guy was super rude to the point where I just cancelled my appointment. I ended up walking until I found another shop, stumbled on Fellow, and I've been going every 2-3 weeks ever since. I've had my hair cut by Spring, Zeke, and Veronica - all 3 are excellent with their own creative styles. Veronica has been cutting my hair consistently recently and she nails it every time. The online booking system is clear and easy to use. I don't usually do this but I have to say something in case folks want to take their kids here. I yelped kids hair cut and fellow barber showed up. I called and they said they only see kids 6 and up. My son is 5. They didn't even give us a chance. My son is so chill when getting haircuts and I tried explaining that but they said that's their rule. I have never heard of a policy like that and speaking to another barber friend of mine in another state they told me if you don't have the skills to cut kids hair then maybe they aren't that good. Came in today for my sons haircut. It says barbershop so you expect a clean cut. Every barbershop we've been to they always clean up his neck and sideburns with a straight razor. You'd think for $37 dollars it would happen. His cut was choppy. Fade wasn't great. We only ended up here because we didn't have much time. Both his barbers always take at least 45 min. To cut his hair, One was off today and the other place is always busy so I rolled the dice. If you want a Supercuts cut for men come here. The lady cut his hair in 20 min. It wasn't Terrible. But you'd expect more. I'm in the beauty industry. 19 years. I know what a clean barber cut should look like. I'll stick with Torres Barbershop or Golden Boy Barbershop on Hunting Drive in El Sereno.
