No Frill Bar and Grill has been open for nearly 30 years by Jerry Meltsner. Jerry's nephew Jon Kliner helps co-own and manage operations. It originally opened on Tidewater Drive, but the space didn't allow for much growth - 10 years later, he moved to a location off Colley Avenue and Spotswood Avenue. Growth continued, moving from counter service to table service. The second location, at 1620 Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, opened in 2005. The restaurant's longevity stems from quality, consistency, price, service, and staff who genuinely care about the business and serving the community. I asked the server for her opinion on two options - Salmon, Shrimp and grits won. The dish was incredible: lightly blackened salmon, for once blackened food that doesn't just taste like salt. I don't dine with the swine, so I asked for no andouille sausage. The sautéed shrimp, caramelized onions, tomatoes, and spinach simmered in Norfolk Canyon ale sauce over cheesy grits and Boursin lavash cracker. The cheesy grits were smooth, and the Boursin lavash cracker was a nice touch. The Boursin added extra creaminess to the meal. The cracker wasn't really a cracker - more like little toasted bread. After this first meal, I know two things for sure: 1. I definitely understand why it is such a local favorite, and 2. I will be back.

Don't go to the one in Chesapeake on Portsmouth Blvd. Their reviews are worse than this one's. My review from the Portsmouth Blvd store: Don't waste your time. Never got to eat. Restaurant had more servers - 9-10 or more - than patrons at 2:00 PM on a Monday, and yet the hostess was cleaning tables. One male who was present when we arrived, and seated near the door perhaps due to his wait, got seated after our first five minutes. Hostess acknowledged our party of two, but no greeting. A twosome that came in after us was given the option of a high-topper in the bar area, and accepted. Since we had the wait and never received any of the options available, we departed. Only other occasion to visit this dump was for a gift card at Christmas. Same confusion by a poor and poorly run staff. Hope that our friends re-gifted our gift card; think so since they still talk to us. read more

Waited an hour, as expected but when they went to sit us down, we were at two different booths that were squished in, which was the first thing that threw us off. They didn't even care to ask to make sure we're okay with it, it was more of a "this is all we got, take it or leave it". Our drinks came out 15 minutes after we put in our food order. The food came out staggering, some foods were forgotten, there was no organization. We had to keep asking where the foods were in order for us to receive them. She bluntly said, "just sit wherever". Our server was kind and helpful & even brought us some crayons & coloring pages. I was under impressed with the burger. It would've been quite delicious but the burger had entirely too much blue cheese on it. I couldn't taste anything besides the blue cheese. In fact, it was dripping off the burger. I'd definitely be open to giving this place another shot & opting for another burger. Seems like a great place to grab a beer, bites, & watch a game!
