I ordered the Chai Whiskey Old Fashioned. It's served just how it should be-with one large square piece of oceans this version comes with a cinnamon stick as the stir stick. It is the tastiest old fashioned I've ever enjoyed! So smooth and delish. No bitterness, just beautiful notes of their signature whiskey. They have many drink choices and a few small bites. Had a reservation for a kinda large group of people (about 12) and had an okay experience. Despite it being a very quiet night we waited about 15 minutes for water, and we're not asked to order until a bit after the water was delivered. When it came time to order we were time and time again reminded that we could only pay with 3 transactions. This was said so much that it became uncomfortable. Did some libations hopping on Sunday....a brewery, a cidery and mid mix was my inaugural visit to Brother Justus. It was still early afternoon so we were only three of a handful of people there. Upon entering a friendly staff greeted us...w a southern drawl of y'all in every sentence... I liked it. As we perused the cocktail menus I asked him what cocktail he would choose? He gave me the answer of: I had the Northern Smoke as my shift drink yesterday and the day before that I had the Cider and Spice. I inquired about the Chimp Crazy...more because I wanted to order it for the name. He gave a thorough and wonderful description that it had a Banana Fosters flavor and runt-like banana. It didn't pique my interest but my friend was sold w the Banana Fosters description! My other friend and I both opted for a Cider and Spice. Once our drinks arrived we all tried a sip of the others. I found the initial sip of both to be boozy. Not off-putting boozy just... this may be a Sipper, boozy. I really liked that every sip of the Cider and Spice was frothy. The Chimp Crazy, w just the one sip I liked the banana aftertaste that lingered on your palate. The Brother Justus space is beautiful, so spacious and bright. Parking is easy right out the door and past the patio. I didn't pay close attention to when the bill came but I think the young fellow said there was a 16% gratuity included. I didn't pay but I appreciate that he pointed that out so I assume someone can add to it but maybe not double it. We took a spin through the merch area as it was in the nook where you entered/exited. I really like the massive ring of wood on the wall. The opposite wall... the large fireplace and library of books... I may need to invest in a smoking jacket and pipe before I return. ha. Brother Justus isn't just a place for a wildly delicious cocktail but it's a whole experience. I'm not a big cocktail drinker but the Cider and Spice is definitely one I won't soon forget! I took a picture of the top of the drink... as I liked the coloring of it. Thank you for bringing out glasses of water and leaving a pitcher as well. Staff down right rude I walked in with my son and a group of 10 people and the gal looked at me and said we don't allow them here., allow what? Umm them people under 21. You need to leave we are very strict on this rule. Mind you we called ahead and were told as long as minors are outside it's fine; one person on our group went up to what we thought was the bar and they turned him away stating we are table service only. Manager came out to talk to me and agreed kids can be on the public grass area but he was more concerned about what number we called and who we talked too vs taking out parties order. I stayed wouldn't it be more important to service your clients and worry about that after the fact and he said no but I'm ready to take your order if you need. I've tried to visit Brother Justice numerous times and every single time we try to go it's closed. You may be thinking it's on me but it's not, I've done everything I can to confirm they are open and every single time I'm wrong due to misinform. Google says they are open on Saturdays until 4, but their own website says they are open until 10, because of the discrepancies and the fact that we've had this issue before we decided to call. Their automated phone system says they are open until 10, they even have an option to hear abnormal closings which said none. Our group eagerly set out for what should have been a gun Saturday evening. We arrived at 5:15 and there's a sign on the door stating that the tap room is closed at 5:00.... Right next to a more permanent sign that says 10pm. There was no event going on but others pulling up were also confused on why they weren't open. With countless distilleries, breweries and cider shops to explore were crossing Brother Justice off the list. There's no shortage of places to visit and there's no consistency here with their hours of operation. I would say double and triple check before you go but I've done it multiple times and have still never been inside. read more

Overall we didn't have a super great experience here. The space is way too big for how it's being used. It almost felt like someone just bought random furniture from a garage sale and threw it in this huge room. The chairs that were used to create the several clusters of living room-like seating were way too deep and spaced out, making sitting uncomfortable and conversation difficult. The space was also just way too quiet. There was music playing, but it was barely audible. Our server was nice, but very slow and not really helpful. We're not whiskey drinkers, so we were hoping to lean on their expertise and recommendations, which were never offered. It took so long to get our check that I eventually just went up to the bar and had another server close us out (we only did this after watching our server walk right by us five times to seat other parties after we told him we were ready for the check). We ordered a flight, an Old Fashioned, a Whiskey Sour, and a Pomona. Overall the drinks were okay. Old Fashioned was as you'd expect and the flight was fine (although the silver whiskey was almost unbearable). The Pomona was absolutely delicious, however. I could drink that all day, every day. One thing that surprised me about the drinks was the smell of the Whiskey Sour. I went to take a sip and my nose was assaulted by the over powering scent of wet dog that was coming from the drink. The Mama Viang isn't particularly my style (kind of heavy with purple sticky rice, coconut milk), but I love the creativity and collaboration!! The whiskey sour and penicillin were incredible staples, though, that I'd definitely come back for!! There location feels much more rural than it is-- it's right by Columbia golf course but feels like you are so removed from the city! Parking is also a breeze with plenty available! A little pricey, but you get what you pay for. The menu is made up of a fabulous mix of classics and originals. None disappoint - even the ones that confuse you. The location is definitely off the beaten path - I used to live less than a mile away and never knew this pocket existed. But the interior is chic and modern, and the patio is large and serene, with views of the golf course across the street. We enjoyed the drinks and if we weren't so hungry, we definitely would of tried more. As evidence that we enjoyed the whiskey, I bought a bottle to gift to a friend who I know enjoys good whiskey. PROS: -The porch! Location is in a unique spot vs. other breweries nearby since it is overlooking a golf course. -Love the concept that all ingredients are local from MN. -I enjoyed the classy yet chill vibe. I also liked their music. It was in Spanish, upbeat, but also relaxing. -Free large open parking lot. -Dog-friendly! I didn't see this on the website so called ahead of time to confirm. I was glad not to leave my dog alone at home. CONS: -They don't allow other food. I would of stayed longer or gone back if they had a food truck or I could of ordered delivery. All they have to eat are snacks like pretzels but I'm usually mindful to eat something more substantial w/ hard alcohol. -Kinda spendy, which is the only thing that knocks this rating to a four. $11-19 per drink plus auto gratuity adds up but the drinks and service were good so def worth trying. Awesome experience and delish drinks! They are taking great COVID safety measures and spaced us apart from other parties. I had the old fashioned and it was smooth and so good. I probably drank it too fast but I regret nothing. I probably could have had at least two more before it hit me! Instead I opted to try the Mama Vang - and original drink made of their American whiskey, coconut milk, purple rice and pho spices. I absolutely loved it. It reminded me of a Taiwanese dessert drink I always get when I'm in LA but with that boozy kick! Overall a great time and definitely a beautiful space. They were getting a patio built outside for the summer and when that is completed, I'll be back! The only thing to note is that the only food they have is charcuterie boards. This place is in an old warehouse off of beautiful Saint Anthony parkway. I booked a reservation for my birthday weekend. NOTE this place is very cautious in regards to covid. They have a hand washing station upon entry, temperature checks, and nicely spaced out seating. They also request you keep your mask on when ordering and limit your time spent there to 90 minutes. I went straight for the Single Malt Flight and my group ordered a variety of cocktails. Orange Dream, Annie Mae, Carnivale, and Penicillin. The flight consisted of their American, Blessed, and Peated. The American was as it sounds, a pretty standard whiskey, drinkable, could be mixed with many things. The Peat was super smooth and warms your esophagus slowly and it's goes down. The Blessed was a heavy and flavorful whiskey that hit you in three different ways. I was also informed my specific pour was blessed by a monk! Of the cocktails the group seemed to prefer the Annie Mae, and Penicillin. The least favorite was the Orange Dream. The interior is a beautiful and clean lofted warehouse with large windows. Each seating section is unique. We had several lounge chairs and a couch! Overall a great experience if you're looking for something different and classy! They have a small food menu, plenty of parking, and it looks like they're working on getting a patio setup! Sophisticated. Dapper. Upscale. Exquisite. Just a few words to describe this impressive space that is Brother Justus. As phenomenal as the building is the highlight for me was the relaxing down to earth feel to the space and superb friendly service we were met with. Whether in high heels or chucks there's a spot for you at this distillery. Whiskey dominates the drink menu but if you're not a neat or on the rocks person the cocktails are unbelievable paired perfectly with their silver whiskey which is un-aged so you get more a tropical fruit forward finish. I did find myself reaching for my wife's cocktail between sips of my flight of their three whiskeys! They also have a nice section on the menu of small bites to pair from chocolates to cheese boards. Though we didn't try anything off this part of the menu there were several tables that were displaying photo worthy spreads! Check this distillery out you won't be disappointed we had a blast just taking in the different history and facts of whiskey in Minnesota displayed around the interior. read more

Not a whiskey guy but really wanted to check Brother Justus out after they opened and there have been some good stories about it. Great build out in an old building in northeast Minneapolis across from Columbia Golf Course (closer to the practice facility). They also just finished building a patio for the summer and there's a big parking lot so it's perfect for some day drinking. Spacious and new inside, servers are very nice and helpful as well. Unique whiskey cocktails or you can order flights of whiskey. Loved the Orange Dream (think orange julius/dreamsicle) which has American whiskey, orange juice, cream, sugar, bitters, orange blossom and vanilla. The whiskey does kind of get lost in this drink but it's flat out delicious and I could drink them all afternoon. Also had to try the Mama Vang which has a Hmong/Viet influence - American whiskey, coconut milk, purple rice and pho spices which really comes through. Very tasty and unique. The Carnivale also sounds pretty appealing as it has passion fruit, lemon juice and grenadine with their American whiskey - maybe next time! I'll even say the Whiskey Sour was unique as it included lemon juice, egg white and honey - very very good. They offer a limited food menu, think charcuterie and some other things but overall, I'm a big fan of Brother Justus and will definitely be back! Awesome spot for whiskey lovers! Booked a reservation for drinks on a Monday night and their patio was the perfect spot to spend a summer evening. I got the Orange Dream which was essentially a whiskey creamsicle in the best way and my boyfriend got the whiskey flight. Love how their menu has options for straight whiskey or both classic and original cocktails! The servers were super friendly and knowledgeable and the overall space is gorgeous. Five stars because this is legitimately some excellent whiskey. It is not at all cheap,a small flight will set you back $20, a half bottle anywhere from $30-40. But it is remarkable for being made entirely of Minnesota ingredients, from grain to wood. If you're a usual bourbon drinker, you'll like the American, and the Peated compares favorably with highland scotch (a little more sweet and less smoke). Their unaged product is unique in that it's not the unbarrelled aged product, it's meant to be drunk white. As such, they've got a really unique tropical flavor profile in it. It wasn't my favorite, but it's one of the most unusual things I've tried in a while. This is not a place you're likely to be a regular at, but it's a great one for a special occasion or a destination of a bike ride. read more

You expect to walk into what has become the default brewery and/or distillery environment of a marginally renovated warehouse space with industrial elements: endless exposed iron beams, spider-web cracked windows, and common barstools lining thick-slabbed, dark wood tables. Not so. When you walk into Brother Justus, instead what you find is a surprisingly bright and softened environment that makes for a much cozier experience in the industrial building shell. Huge windows with a view past the patio to the golf course next door, light wood surfaces, intentional lighting to preserve some intimacy at well-spaced seating areas, mid-century modern-inspired furniture. The environmental branding throughout provides glimpses of the story behind the whiskey and the curious name, and it points to the natural elements of Minnesota that help create the product in question: Great Plains barley, white oak savannah, boreal forest with peat bogs. Yes, you'll spot the stills back in the production area, but you'll be more visually drawn to the tall, elegant shelving behind the bar, then to the end of the hall, where an arched alcove with a fireplace and bookcases makes you want to spend more than a few hours sipping whiskey with people you enjoy, all in a comfortable space. During multiple visits, I've appreciated the keen and friendly staff, who are glad to explain cocktails and some of the whiskey-making process. Nice to see the gratuity fee to support a living wage/benefits for staff (like many responsible bars and restaurants are doing because, you know, we have been going through a pandemic, and some people are still terrible tippers ...). This is not a place to order rail drinks (there are none); don't expect to pay rail drink prices. And, of course, the whiskey: Start with the flight to get a sense of the variety of aromas and flavors they can pull from a few ingredients and time in a barrel. The silver will surprise you. The American will satisfy you. And please don't avoid the cold-peated whiskey, even if you're leary of Scotch.
