Festive and fun place for a cocktail, at the holiday season and band. I saw their menu of cocktails was very creative and enjoyed everything we tried. They also have a nice selection of shoot to go alone. My only complaint would have been that much. The ricotta came with two small slices of bread so we had a lot more cheese and then bread to eat it with. Our server was super friendly and attentive. Staff greeted us as we found a comfy table for two. My husband ordered us drinks at the bar that were delivered to our table. They produce their own spirits and bitters and had lots of classic, signature drinks and some holiday themed ones as well. Went here to try their cocktail for a cause supporting MIRAC. According to their Instagram, they do cocktails for a cause almost every month as well as several other cool events. They had a tropical themed pop-up for the entire month of February and I wish I would have taken advantage of it sooner! They also do table service which was surprising for a casual cocktail bar, but the staff is really friendly, and I was happy to support a cause I care about. Didn't try the pizza from OG Zaza because we already had dinner, but I will definitely be coming back in the future. I think this is a hidden Saint Paul GEM! read more

Fun ambiance and Instagram-worthy cocktails can't make up for chronic understaffing and steep prices. I've been to King Coil a couple of times - once for a friend's birthday and then a gathering with folks after a community theatre production. Both times, I enjoyed the charming atmosphere and ample parking but noticed that there was usually only one poor soul behind the bar who was struggling to keep up with not only walk ups and those ordering from the bar, but also the dozen or so tables. Having pizza available is a plus, but like the cocktails the prices are quite steep. read more

Decided to stay for a light lunch and drinks. They have a counter to order pizzas and apps before grabbing a table. You can also order food at the bar if you prefer. What's confusing is the menus aren't the same between the counter and the bar menu which is a bit confusing. We ordered the Caesar salad and meatballs for lunch. Both were very good. The drinks are really the standout here. Such a nice variety and delicious too! Ordered the pup-a mint (peppermint White Russian), with proceeds going to Underdog Rescue, yes please. Hubby ordered an NA pear mocktail; delicious and refreshing. Overall, we enjoy this place and the Roman style pizza is very good, tried it on a previous visit. We went to King Coil around 8:00pm on a Friday. To be honest, it was pretty dead. It was the two of us and maybe 6-10 other people. Perhaps their busy times are earlier or later than that? It is in the same space as OG Zaza pizza. We had already had dinner so I can't review that place. We sat at the bar, our server was very friendly and seemed to know a lot about the beverage offerings. It was fun to watch them make the drinks. They make their own spirits, and they are pretty good. I had an old fashioned which was good, not awesome, you could definitely taste the bourbon notes, overall a solid, good drink. My partner had a Point Panic, which was recommended by the bartender. It was good and fruity, refreshing. While we were deciding what to order we were quickly served a nice bottle of water. There is seating both inside and outside. The general vibe was mid-scale craft cocktail bar. There were lots of windows so it was nice and bright. It would be great for a date night. It was quiet, but again there weren't many people there. You can order by QR code, or in person. We were not rushed at all. Our two drinks came to around $30, which seems to be the going rate these days. I randomly ended up here for a drink after work during happy hour. I sat outside because it was a beautiful day and ordered a Queen Coil- a gin sour with egg whites. I also tried the botanical flight- also gin. It was very refreshing and strong! King Coil is a distillery so everything is made in house which gives it a great touch. The service was great! There is a new kitchen concept inside King Coil. Now, instead of a full menu, the kitchen is Og Zaza Pizza, which makes New Haven style pizzas. We ordered the family deal, which was great for 2 people and let us take home leftovers. The Cesar salad was simple but good. We also had the Truffle mushroom pizza and the chicken pizza (Fredo). The Fredo was absolutely delicious, the chicken and sauce and sweet peppers going well. The Truffle Shroom had good flavor, but needed more stuff on it, because it came out a little over-done and dry. New Haven style pizza just isn't my favorite. You also have to eat on paper plates with plastic silverware, even though you are sitting inside a nice distillery. You have a server for your drink order, but you have to go up and get your pizza order, and they didn't tell us via email when it was done. Our drinks were good, but I found the clash of the ambiance didn't work well for me. This is a great spot to order takeout from, or to eat while sitting outside at Lake Monster having a beer, but I didn't love doing dine-in with it. read more

This is one of my go to places when I need to just chill for an hour at the end of the work day. Really great drinks, and I love that they're branching into bitter and herbal liqueurs. Bartenders are generally friendly and knowledgeable , though a particular shout out to Athena who was great the time I brought my kids. It would also be a good date spot. The pizza place embedded in it is basic but good and of course, you're drinking, what else do you want but pizza? I wish they had a few apps so I could order something when there by myself. They used to have a happy hour that covers all Cocktails, now it's just the draft ones. That's still a solid deal and fully recommended. Went on a Friday night a little while ago. The Visit St. Paul patio passport led me here. The patio was packed when we went so we opted to sit inside which was pretty empty. The restaurant is very nice and beautiful inside. Loved the color scheme and decor overall. My friend ordered a pizza which took a while to come out but she said it was really good. So next time I go I need to try it. I need to try food in general. We were barhopping and mostly in for drinks. Unfortunately the drink I tried to order was out so the bartender offered to make me a modified version, I think it was like a lemon drop. The drink was good overall but a bit disappointing they were running out of stuff leading into the weekend. Again I'd for sure go back to try more things. read more

I went to celebrate a birthday with some late-night cocktails on the second day they were open to the public. I had made a reservation for the "back-bar", which was a little quieter than the front space and they had a special menu for cocktails. My group tried a few different cocktails (I can't remember the names though) and grabbed a cheese plate. Cocktails were enjoyable. Only thing I didn't enjoy about the cheese plate were the grapes not being seedless, a warning on they so you don't nearly break a tooth. Our bartenders were all very personable and let us try a few different things as well to see what we liked. Biggest drawback of the night was the amount of time it took to tab out. We probably waited about 25 minutes after taking our last sips before being asked if we were ready to go. It is a new place, so maybe has some kinks to work out, but I think there us a lot of potential here. read more

Probably one of my most anticipated openings of the Fall in the Cities, but in my opinion, it's a bit of a disappointment. I'd give it a few weeks to percolate before checking it out. The hostess was very flustered upon our arrival, yet the space was mostly empty. We waited 10-15 minutes to even have a server visit our table with water. When I asked about a few drinks, she kept saying it was "really tasty" without giving me any nuance about the actual recipe or drink profile. The space is fun and retro but a bit under decorated. We tried four drinks and we're disappointed in all four: the Spanish Style Gin and Tonic tasted like a salty lemonade, the Banana Rum Ramos had zero banana flavor, the Kiev Mule legitimately tastes like a tequila margarita, and the Mai Tai was bitter. As a distillery fan, I was looking forward to a new place to try and have been following King Coil for several weeks to see progress updates and opening information. I was excited to see they had finally announced an opening date of September 29th, so of course, I made plans to go! I made an online reservation for 6:15 at the Back Bar opening night, which timed out well for me. I don't love being out late so I figured this would be a good time to go after work and still be home by 8:30 or so. A few hours later, I got an email from the owner saying the space was booked out for a party until 7:00 and asked if I could move my reservation to 7:15, or change it to the Front Bar and keep the same time. I wanted the Back Bar for the unique cocktail experience, so I agreed to 7:15, though it wasn't ideal for me. I was honestly a little taken aback by this request. I made the reservation the night before so surely they would have known the space was rented out before then, so why were those times available? And also, renting the space out for a private event opening night? I thought that was a little bizarre. Onto the experience itself. I genuinely would not have known this was an opening night experience. There was no real fanfare or anything indicating this was more than just a typical night. Most of the excitement seemed to be at Lake Monster next door. King Coil felt like kind of an afterthought. We got our seats at the Back Bar, which didn't really feel like a "special" or different part of the venue than the main area. I got to see the cocktail menus from both parts. The Front Bar drinks were your standards you can get anywhere. Old Fashioned, Mai Tai, Highball, etc. The Back Bar had more "creative" cocktails. I guess I really didn't see the need to separate these as two separate experiences. Having both a classic and creative menu available to all makes a lot more sense. Maybe because the Back Bar didn't really feel all that different, but the two menus depending on where you sit just didn't make sense to me. King Coil had posted on their socials prior to the event that they sold their pizza by the slice or as whole pies. When we asked about pizza by the slice, we were told they "weren't doing that tonight". We ended up getting the Sweet Pep pizza. Was it good? Yes! But was it worth the $23 price tag? Not for the size it was. We also got the roasted tri-color carrots and the pickle plate. Both were very good and a little more reasonably priced. Quality ingredients or not, pizza was definitely too expensive for what you got. Service was kind of meh. We ordered our pizza and second round of drinks at the same time and the pizza came out before the drinks. As for the drinks themselves, they were okay. I had the Black Daiquiri, the Banana Rum Ramos, and the Silk Road. The Black Daiquiri and Silk Road were very good, but I didn't feel they were absolutely standout compared to other distilleries and cocktail lounges I've been to. Again, not quite the "Back Bar" experience that was hyped up. The Banana Rum Ramos had almost no flavor at all. Super bland and I couldn't taste any banana. I would not get that one again. Overall, my visit to King Coil was underwhelming, especially for a grand opening. It didn't feel special, almost more like an afterthought. I was surprised the staff wasn't talking about their spirits, being a new distillery and all. I was expecting that to be a big selling point, but not a word from any member of the staff. Other distilleries I go to, the staff loves talking about their craft, new products, mixology, etc. I just didn't get that here. I would love if the Back Bar had a "secret entrance" or something that made it a little more unique and set apart from the regular area. Otherwise, you just get the vibe that you get one menu or another depending on which half of the venue you sit in. Hoping to see some improvements moving forward but until then, I won't be going out of my way to visit. read more

We visited King Coil after dinner to try out the new addition to the distillery scene in the metro. We had all been following them on social for a while and were eager to try. We were seated quickly even though the space was relatively busy and our server was extremely friendly. The space is very nice - it has large windows, an upper balcony for seating, and the back bar with really cool lighting. The decor is nicely done with modern touches like wallpaper but it also leans into the fact that it's an old mattress warehouse (hence the name King Coil). Our only complaint was that the bathroom was far away and sort of hard to find, but that's minor. We ordered the first round - a classic martini, and whiskey sour (the gin sour with a rye whiskey substitute), and the Spanish Gin and Tonic. The classic martini was good and served cold, but it included simple syrup and was too sweet for our liking. The whiskey sour was really nicely made; even some people at the table who didn't like whiskey appreciated that cocktail. The Spanish Gin and Tonic was really good and unexpected. I couldn't place the flavoring in the tonic until the waitress told us it was celery salt. It sounds weird, but was so good and gave the cocktail a refreshing, savory tilt. We loved it. For a second round, we got a gin sour, more gin and tonics, and the burrata and cheese plate appetizers. The gin sour was weirdly not as good to us as the whiskey sour. The cheese platter was good and the cheeses paired nicely with the other items served on the board. We all loved the pickled golden beets they included! The star of the burrata was the pesto that it was served with. It was bright and herby and really lent a lot of flavor to the cheese. Overall, I thought this was a good place to check out. This is our second visit here and we have to say we are huge fans so far! We visited on Wednesday just past dinner time and were able to be seated immediately - not much of a crowd. Their list of cocktails is huge with options ranging from traditional highballs to very unique and experimental blends of flavor. I had the Last Word and it had a nice balance of tartness, spirit, and a little touch of a black licorice sort of flavor that played in nicely. They additionally offer upscale bar snacks and pizzas for food although we did not partake this time. The host and bartender were both great and friendly when we visited. In our opinion, the host added a really good personality to the place and made it very easy to walk in, get seated, and settle in. The addition of asking the customer where they'd prefer to sit is something you don't get everywhere and you can tell this staff works hard to make sure people feel welcome. The cocktails came out fast and we had a buy one get one cocktail coupon we had gotten at a previous event we had been to so the tab was very reasonable for two drinks. However, even at full price I would say this experience is worth it as the spirits are all local, the blends are interesting, and the service is good. Additionally, the place is quite big with both indoor and outdoor tables as well as bar seating. The decorations are understated but cute with the presence of a lot of succulents on the tables which we thought was a fun touch. We had broccolini, charcuterie, another charcuterie of pickled veggies, and almost every pizza on their menu. Prices are fair and the wait staff and venue were outstanding. Well... to be honest I can't review the food or drinks but I can share my awful experience in the 3min I was there before deciding to spend my money elsewhere. Walked in and place looked pretty calm other than the burning smell coming from the open kitchen. The design of the place is a bit of a miss because you walk into a bustling kitchen and if the staff should choose to give you a place to sit or stand it's kinda intense and definitely gonna leave smelling like the kitchen. We were met by a frantic looking staffer and asked if there was a table available. She snapped at us that she was busy and any open tables were reserved. Ok, cool, respect. Asked if we grabbed a drink at the bar how long it might be (there were several open tables but seemed there was some kind of party in back) she kinda ignored us and walked away. There were 2 spots at the bar so we decided to ask the bartender if it was open seating. He said, "yes but there's no room". It was clear that there were two open spaces directly in front of us so I responded "so, someone is sitting here?" He said, "no but I'm too busy". I again looked around to a 3/4 full restaurant and decided to leave. It was pretty obnoxious and I get having a bad or stressful night but yall, be kind and put on your professional attitude. We reserved the Mezzanine level for my birthday and it was perfect! The atmosphere was cozy with a cool vibe; exposed brick walls, festive stars hanging from the high ceiling, comfy chairs, open staircase and large windows. From the moment we arrived Montana greeted us and provided excellent, fun, friendly service. We ordered a variety of pizzas and salad to pair with our cocktails. The pizzas have unique well curated toppings that were a hit for our party. We ordered a variety of cocktails from a classic old fashion to their own speciality cocktails and mock tails that pleased our guests, who will definitely ALL be back! I like that it's a locally distillery, but honestly the whisky and vermouth (both from the distillery) were not very notable and made for a pretty uninteresting drink in my opinion. My girlfriend got a Mai Tai and there wasn't much as far as complexity or innovation in it either, which to be fair is hard to do with just one white rum that didn't have that much character; if I had to guess it'd probably make for a pretty decent Daquiri though. This is a fun and fairly new gem in a funky, developing former factory site. The vibe is a blend of old warehouse with a layer of mid-century aesthetics. They are a distillery and make their own spirits onsite from which they have created a list of classic and unique cocktails. Of special note is their trentaerbe (roughly Italian for thirty herbs) which is refreshingly minty and blends well in their own cocktail recipes. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful in making recommendations. We were impressed with the broccolini appetizer with peppery honey sauce balanced against a smoked whitefish pâte that evokes the smoked fish of Minnesota's northern lake country. Entrees are mostly limited to pizza at this point, but once again, there are twists brought to the toppings nicely prepared.
