Best breakfast in town, seriously. Get there EARLY on weekends if you don't want to wait an hour for a table though! The best part about this place is if you do have to wait (inevitable) there is a coffee bar that you can order from in the meantime. I typically eat boring when it comes to breakfast, but I have had the regular 2 eggs with bacon, toast, and home fries and they are exceptional. The home fries are seasoned really well with garlic and parmesan and everything is cooked to perfection. I do enjoy the black bean breakfast burrito and my husband LOVES the Mama Lil's Special. My husband has been telling me about this place for months and months. He works down that way and apparently goes a lot. We went this morning and waited an hour. The waitress was great, my cafe au lair was great, but I don't get it. My grits were cold, my omelette was lukewarm (gross), and my toast was cold. We ordered a pancake for our kids to share and they wanted more so we ordered a second and instead of billing us for an order of pancakes they billed us separately so 2 pancakes were almost $10. We never know how much they'll eat so we win some and lose some ordering that way and i did order them separately, but thought it would have been nice for them to just bill me for an order of 2. So my boyfriend and I decided to stop in for breakfast because we had to do laundry next door. The place opened at 8 and there was a line out the door waiting for them to open, we took that as a good sign. They open up and we sit at the counter in the next room. Our server was sweet, but she didn't pay us much attention after taking our food orders, another server ended up refilling our coffee even though our server was practically in front of us the whole time; the coffee was good though! Food came out and it looked amazing! Boyfriend got the open face Florentine with cheesy grits and toast served with peach jelly, I got the San Diegan with potatoes and a biscuit served with mystery jelly (it was good, I just don't know what flavor it was). It was a copious amount of food, I couldn't finish completely. Now my biscuit did have a small bug on the side; I just cut off that piece and continued my meal but minus points to the kitchen and the server who brought us our food for not catching that. Over all it was a great experience, a little pricey (it a mom and pop so it's expected) but we will probably go back again! read more

I would weigh in at 3 stars, but they get an extra star for being VERY vegetarian-friendly, which is a hard thing to find in this city. I like Brother Juniper's food, especially the raisin toast, which is truly a transformational experience (what can I say? It's the little things). But I absolutely CANNOT get my head around the absurd wait if you go later than opening on almost any day of the week. I basically only go here when I know I can be among the first in the door (6:30 or 7:00 a.m.) The coffee is decent, but they bring out those little plastic cups of half and half instead of the real stuff, and the service always seems a little ... hesitant. Not rude or negligent, just not confident and on-point. Some breakfast items can border on too heavy/greasy for my tastes (cheese grits and home fries), but there are plenty of things on this menu that I love -- the meatless scrambles, the egg and cheese biscuit, and the raisin toast (obviously) to name a few. I went to Brother Juniper's with a local at the University of Memphis on Sunday. It takes over an hour to get a table, so I was really expecting it to knock my socks off. It didn't. It's standard NJ diner breakfast with the exception of the super-orange cheese grits. Grits aren't generally available in NJ. Cracker Barrel has the same wait time and the food has some taste. Wow! My wife and I were just hanging out in Memphis for the weekend and had no clue where to go for breakfast. Using her phone, she searched "Memphis, Tn, breakfast" and Brother Junipers was at the top of the search results. Again I say "WOW"!! The food easily ranks near the top of my list for breakfast! We were warmly greeted and was told that there was an hour wait. They put us on the list, took our phone number, and recommended that we go to the nearby botanical gardens. That was a very nice way to pass the time until they sent us a text message 45 minutes later. It was difficult to know what to order but I highly recommend create your own omelet. YUM YUM! I love to eat but the omelet was huge and I also had toast and a pancake...again WOW! We will surely visit there again! read more

So I just left Brother Juniper's, this was my second time there and the second time that I was less than impressed. I went this morning because I keep hearing how amazing this place is and since I thought it wasn't that great the first time I went, I decided to give it a second try...maybe it was an off day the first time I went?? Well, my second trip proved to me that it wasn't an off day, the place just isn't that great. I expect, after a fourty-five minute wait, for something to jump off the plate and dazzle me. I do not expect, after a forty-five minute wait, to get a sloppy over cooked omelett and heavily over seasoned cheese grits. This place is NOT worth the ridiculously long waits....maybe if it was after bar close, I was wasted and nothing else was open THEN I could appreciate this greasy spoon. I will say, however, that the service is wonderful. The staff is so friendly and attentive even when it's obvious that they're in the weeds, something a former service industry employee, like myself, really appreciates. If I were on death row, I would strongly consider having the San Diegan as my last meal. With a Juniper (caramel) latte, of course. This place has dished up my favorite breakfast in Memphis since my first visit in 2002, and I have never looked back. This family run business packs in crowds on the weekend but they open at 6 am on weekdays if you want to avoid the rush (or just come earlier on the weekend, there isn't a wait at 8/9 am on a Saturday/Sunday). This family run business is as wholesome as it gets. Friends order a huge variety of menu items but I haven't strayed from the San Diegan in a decade. An open faced omelet, it starts with a flat layer of egg, topped with sour cream, crispy seasoned home fries, perfectly cooked juicy bacon, green onions, tomatoes, cheddar and feta cheeses (I opt out of the portabellas). This menu item is famous for being Rachel Ray's favorite and she picked it for a reason. You have your choice of side items, but you would be a fool to pick anything other than the cheese fries (they require doctoring with salt and pepper, but admittedly I use a LOT of both). I waffle between biscuit and toast (with homemade jellies), either one is a safe bet depending on your mood. The juniper latte is an excellent compliment if you want something more than plain coffee. They work the espresso machine like champs and nicely layer it with caramel. Any time I have out of town guests, Brother Junipers is a must on our Memphis food adventures. read more

This is probably the most popular breakfast/brunch family owned/run restaurant in Memphis. Everyone knows that if you have guests visiting from out of town, this is the place you absolutely have to take them to. The wait staff is so friendly and wonderful.The wait-time on the weekends is an absolute nightmare, so do not come here on a Saturday or Sunday if you are hung-over or starving for food, because you will be standing there waiting for a long time. The wait-time during the week is usually not too bad though. The worst it gets is 15 mins. The longest I've had to wait on a weekend is 1.5 hours. They also do not serve any alcohol. That said, the food and coffee here are so good! Everything you can possibly order on the menu is perfect and comes in huge portions. Their breakfast specials are delicious and any one of their regular or open-faced omelettes are delicious. They have really good vegetarian options. Their cheese grits are a must. I get them every time! My favorite omelette is the Spanakopita. Their home-fries are so good. Seriously cannot say a single bad thing about this place except for the horrendous wait-time. Definitely give BJ's a try during the week for an early breakfast before heading to work. It will make the rest of your day go by brilliantly! I just wish they would do something about that wait-time. Maybe expand the restaurant and hire more people. They are a little on the pricy side, but the portions are very reasonable, so it balances itself out. read more

First trip to Memphis in years and our room wasn't ready when we landed so we opted to go for breakfast. At first I was thinking -- waffle house! But then we checked reviews on breakfast spots in the area and this place had 4 and 5 star reviews and was pretty close to where we were. We weren't sure about it when we drove up, in fact we almost left since it was kinda hole in the wall ish... SO glad we decided to stay! It was about 11am on a thursday morning and while the dining area was pretty full there was no wait. Our server was patient as we browsed the menu (for as long as we looked it over you wouldn't have known we were starving!) And he answered all of our questions. I ordered the pancake w/egg and had country ham as my meat and a side of home fries! Hubby had the Garden and Lamb omelet. He LOVED it! We split the pancakes - 3 large cakes, there was NO way I was going to finish those on my own! The potatoes were amazing and I loved the maple syrup! Hubby's meal came with biscuits and blackberry preserves. The biscuits were ok but the preserves were awesome. They had some sonny salt, chipotle hot sauce and their traditional hot sauce on the table. My eggs were cooked perfectly and the hot sauce and a dash of the sonny salt made them spectacular! I was so full after leaving I wasn't hungry as lunchtime came and went. This will be our breakfast spot when we return to Memphis! read more

Back to Memphis for a short visit, and this is the BEST breakfast place town. Others have great biscuits, but this place has it all, (like Blue Plate). Great omelets, hubby had the Mexican with chorizo, black beans, etc. Wow, amazing. Although seemingly plain, I had the 4 cheese omelet with cheddar, mozzarella, swiss, & feta. This was very yummy, the salty feta really made it. Biscuits were awesome as well, homemade preserves actually won out over the honey on the biscuits. Every time we are town, this is our go to place. Even though we arrived just before opening, there were a number of folks already waiting for the opening. Always a good sign. Also, way large portions, I can not even finish half the meal. The staff is super efficient & kind. FYI- I HATE any brown on an omelet, so always order it "light, no brown". What I get is always a toss up. Well, here, they cooked the omelet perfectly! Not one piece of brown, and not runny either. Oh, and the homefries are crispy on the outside, luscious on the inside, and the sprinkle of Parmesan cheese doesn't go unnoticed. Everything was great. We were told the wait was going to be 30 minutes (on a Saturday morning) but only waited around 10 minutes. My mother and I were driving through the city on our cross country trip and two days later she is still raving about it. She got the San Deigan and I got the Florentine. Omg!! This is one of my favorites now for breakfast. I went yesterday morning when I got off work with my bestie. We both ordered a Juniper Latte to start us off. The Juniper Latte is your normal latte with caramel and man maybe one of the best lattes I've ever had. I typically have to add into my lattes, but this was perfect the way it was. Now for the meal; we both ordered the Hungry Tiger. This is an open faced omelet and it comes with cheesy grits and either toast or biscuit (both breads are homemade btw). In the Hungry Tiger it was home fries, turkey sausage, ham, bacon, scallions, diced tomatoes, cheese blend, and feta cheese to top it off. It was very delicious and of course we couldn't finish it all . Those cheesy grits was to die for. Now if you aren't a big fan of garlic then you may want to get another side. The homemade biscuits were melt in your mouth good. They were so light and fluffy, and you also receive some homemade jelly (2 different floors) they make daily. This meal was not expensive to me, a grand total of $18 roughly, but the portions were huge. I will be back. Oh yeah the waitress, ONE OF THE BEST I EVER HAD!! Great atmosphere as well!!
