During that visit I also signed up for the VIP membership. For what it costs, the benefits seemed like a no-brainer, especially the 90-day return policy. After wearing the shoes for a while, though, I realized they just weren't the right fit for me. On top of that, the custom insoles had started squeaking every time I walked, which became impossible to ignore. I went back today expecting to return everything and maybe try something else. Instead, I met Yella. She never made me feel like I was inconveniencing her. Before talking about a return, she wanted to understand what wasn't working. She tried a few adjustments, asked questions, and then said something I honestly don't hear very often anymore: "What do you want to do?" It wasn't just something she said because she had to. She genuinely wanted to help me find the best solution. From there, the whole experience went to another level. She had me take off my shoes and socks, put me on a treadmill, and recorded how I walked and jogged. Then we moved over to another station where different sensors measured my feet from every angle. Finally, she showed me a detailed report on the screen explaining how my feet move, where the pressure points are, and why the original shoes weren't working as well as they should. I learned more about my feet in 20 minutes than I have in my entire life. The funny part is that I walked in planning to return roughly $400 worth of shoes and insoles. Instead, I walked out happy--and with another pair of shoes. The pair Yella recommended, along with the fitting technology, felt right the moment I put them on. Good products are easy to find. People like Yella are much harder to find. She turned what I expected to be a return into one of the best customer service experiences I've had in a long time. I politely declined as I don't want to add an extra $100+, and they seemed pretty gimmicky (I don't want to buy anything I haven't fully researched). The employee kept bringing up how I was making the wrong choice and how I would inevitably become injured without them. By this point I wanted to purchase the shoes and leave. I politely declined the VIP membership at check out, but the employee halted the checkout process and said I wouldn't be able to return them without this membership. At this point I was worn down and relented (I got the VIP thing). I ended up having to return the shoes so I thought the membership would actually come in handy. I returned the shoes and the employee explained that I could only get store credit. This would've been fine if the previous employee hadn't said that I could "return them" (should've specified exchange). I explained this to the employee doing my exchange and she gave me attitude about it, saying "how does that make sense? That wouldn't be a very good business model, would it?" I was a bit taken aback because I was bringing up this discrepancy politely. Furthermore, there are plenty of stores (eg. REI) where you can return lightly worn shoes. All in all, I will be using my store credit online where I won't have to deal with this location. I've also cancelled the membership.

I wasn't able to return or exchange the items because it had been over 30 days (40 days) since the original purchase date. These items were unused, tagged and I had the original receipt. I understand if I missed the cash return period (the holidays are busy, I meant to make the exchange sooner), but I was very unhappy that I couldn't at least make an exchange. I also made other holiday returns / exchanges that day at Vuori, Anthropologie and Nordstrom that day, and all of them accepted my returns for cash or exchanges. Final note: the quality of Athleta clothing has gone down over the years, but the price remains the same. I was trying on a jacket and I couldn't even zip up the jacket it was so cheap. I will not be making future purchases from Athleta.

I randomly find made in Portugal shoes that may run for $280 to $300 for $40. I think it's about approach. I will say that the Cap Hill location feels like the grow up sibling. I go here for Scotch and Soda blazers, Camper shoes, random Nike collabs, and a $20 dress shirt. I am happy that this crossroads exists. Service is hit or miss. Though I've never availed of this benefit, it's great to have as a perk.
