This it's my first experience with having my chimney swept (cleaned). I called several companies, speaking with their representatives, and read all reviews. I landed on Brooks Chimney Sweeping (family operation with Traci, Randy Brooks, and son Joe). Traci was awesome to speak to on the phone. She was honest, sincere, and VERY professional. No bad-mouthing other chimney sweep companies (most of the other companies I spoke to did). We set an appointment a for week after my initial call, had a set price for the cleaning and I eagerly awaited. On my cleaning day, Randy and Joe came into my home, set up protective coverings and moved some furniture to ensure no damage. They did a fantastic job. I checked before and after the cleaning and the difference was amazing! And of equal importance, Randy did not (repeat NOT) try to upsell any additional service or product. He told me my fireplace (75 yrs/o) looks great and was well built. How refreshing!! The price was exactly as quoted. (By the way, about $100 less than other local companies). I am completely happy with the service I received and the family experience the Brooks family provided. read more

I called Brooks Chimney for help with a 60 year old fireplace/chimney and they got me on the schedule for two days later. They were on time, respectful and communication was great! They did the initial inspection and cleaning then also helped with some sealing repairs to prevent water damage. Inflated prices and questionable selling tactics: I hired Brooks Chimeny to do a simple job which they did quickly, it would have been all fine except that he overcharged me and throughtout the whole process the owner of Brooks Chimney Sweeping was trying to talk me into replacing the entire chimney by using scary selling tactics to upsell his services and extract even money from me. I can handle that sort of misleading salesmanship but I fear other more trusting costumers may fall prey of his exagerations. If he tells you there is something wrong with your fireplace simply get a second opinion, chances are it is working perfectly. Brooks Chimeny from Ojai gets a low rating, not recommended. read more

Excellent work by Randy Brooks!! I was given a courteous and prompt response when I left a voicemail on the company phone. When I "settled" on Brooks Chimney I had done a rather thorough job of researching. Including the Better Business Bureau. In the BBB, Brooks Chimney rated A+...all else in the surrounding area fell WAY short! Before Randy started working on my chimney, I had a few questions, which he patiently and knowledgeably answered. He also offered some very helpful hints which I will take. Once again, I'm a happy camper with Brooks Chimney Sweeping!! As a side note, Brooks Chimney was part of the team to service the White House's chimneys in 2008. I asked Mr. Brooks to remove a fireplace insert from a rental and crate it because we were taking it to our home out of state. He had an opening and said he would put me in so it wouldn't get filled while I tried to contact the tenant. As soon as I got a response from the tenant, I let him know to go ahead. He sent me pictures and wanted payment. He did remove the insert but left the adapter attached to the flue and set the insert outside. In the text back and forth I asked him if the rectangular piece attached to the flue was easily replaceable. He did not know what I was talking about so I asked my husband about it and my husband told me it went with the insert so I asked Mr. Brooks to take that out also. It was then that he said he had left the house an hour ago and kept talking over me, telling me that we had had a loose business relationship, he had gotten my phone message which I left at 5 AM on his business phone (sorry, I don't have control over when my tenants respond to my messages), he had expected me to be there (at a rental when I'm out of state - I guess he doesn't listen well or is very forgetful), and on and on. He was quite argumentative and I had to tell him to take a breath a couple of times to get a word in edgewise. So, he didn't do everything I asked, he was argumentative, and he charged me $300 for the privilege. I had seen a few other reviews before I called him where these personality traits came out. I suggested to him that he might want to change his business model. I fully expect, seeing the other reviews, that Mr. Brooks will give a response to this. That's OK. I just will not recommend him to any of my friends in the area. Have at it, Mr. Brooks! UPDATE: Everyone has a bad day. Mr. Brooks and I have amicably resolved the issues stated above. Do I feel ripped off? Heck yeah! I called Brooks to get my fireplace fixed because it was filling the room with smoke. He charged me $2660 for 2 hours of work that left me with the same problem. I called to talk to him about it, and instead of a call back I got an email full of disclaimers - it seems to me he was expecting that I would have this problem. The email says he'll come back and fix the problem again for another $3000 - $4000 and claims the work he did was never intended solve the smoking problem I would never have spent $2660 for work that would leave my chimney in the same unusable condition. He must know nobody spends so much money to end up with something they can't use! Anyway, if he didn't think I was trying to cure a smoke problem, why did he make a point of building a tiny fire at the end of his service call to show that the smoke problem was 'solved', get my check and leave? By the way, he is now trying to get me to change this Yelp review and give him more stars. I'd give 0 stars if I could! Business practices that leave the customer feeling tricked, terrible customer relations, shoddy (in my opinion) work, it doesn't get any worse that this. Call anyone else, not this guy! If you just need your chimney swept, that's fine - cost was $189. But my chimney crown needed patching - it took him & his asst less than 1/2 hr & the charge was $329. Other options I was given (such as replacing chimney cap with a new one) were also inflated. Compare this job with a guy who will acid etch & refurbish my old bathtub - job will take 3 hrs & involve caustic chemicals, & that job only cost $350. Entire re-tiling of my kitchen (which would have taken TWO DAYS) was quoted at $660. Both of these other jobs are licensed contractors- not immigrant labor. If you need any add'l work done on your chimney, find someone else. Brooks Chimney is fine just for the sweeping part. read more

He asks all the right questions and then comes up with really good solultions. .We have an older home which needs someone who can work the the complexities that come with a home of age. I hired Brooks Chimney Sweeping to clean my excessively dirty chimney. We just bought this house and it was not previously maintained very well. Randy came out to do the job and was very professional, personable and informative. He and his assistant were polite and kept my home clean throughout the process. He showed me the correct way to set up and light a fire (which, being a novice, I found helpful). Randy also told me what issues he found (which I knew were there) and he explained what would need to be done to fix them. He also let me know what was/wasn't a priority. Luckily, there were no emergency issues, but I am eager to replace my broken chimney top and vent cover soon. I will definitely be calling Randy back to fix these items in the next few weeks. For $188.00 Brooks came to the house and cleaned only the bottom third or so of our fireplace and then followed up with a very very cursory cleaning of the soot - there was soot around the base on the floor and a great deal of it still in the fireplace. The first time we closed the damper we were then rained on by all the soot that fell behind the damper. No one went up onto the roof to clean the top portion of the chimney. The only nice part of the experience is that the two men who came were good natured. Brooks was by far and away the most expensive sweep and their service was subpar at the very best. read more

Found Brooks on Yelp, and gave them a call. We bought our house about one year ago, and wanted to have it cleaned before this winter. They cleaned it, as well as told me what product I could pick up at the hardware store for a short term fix for a crack in one of the panels in the firebox. He could have tried to sell me expensive repairs, but he didn't.. I told him we plan on remodeling in the near future, so a quick fix was all I really wanted.
