So, there's this cage-looking thing that sits on top of my chimney. It decided to take a vacation during the last windstorm, probably somewhere tropical because it hasn't been seen since. I figured I should replace it before another squirrel moves in and starts charging me rent. A quick search told me chimney caps are pretty affordable--$60 to $80. Easy enough, right? Just order one, grab a ladder, and play rooftop superhero for a day. Except... I have a complicated relationship with heights. I'm not afraid of them, per se. Heights and I are cool. Falling off ladders and roofs, though? That's where I draw the line. So rather than test gravity's patience, I called in Sean, the chimney hero. A friend told me about cleaning out dryer vents a little over a week ago which is something I'd never heard of before. She mentioned about how clothes might not be getting as dry in the dryer and other things to look for too. I just happened to notice that my clothes weren't getting as dry in my dryer. My chimney chase cover and shroud were terribly rusted from the sea air and terribly damaged from the crows beating their food on it many times a day. After securing 4 quotes from 2 roofing companies and 2 chimney repair companies, it was clear that Sean with VenturaCo Chimney Pros stood out. He is knowledgeable, trustworthy, reliable, precise and friendly. I could tell immediately that he was THE contractor I would hire when he came to give me a free estimate. He took measurements with so much detail, it was welcoming to see! He measured the length and width of the chase cover plus the width of the lip (he was he first to tell me that the width of the lip mattered in protecting the wood), the length, width and height of the shroud, the size of the flue, the placement of the flue opening, and the underside space between the chase cover and the wood (he was the first to tell me that this space allows for good airflow). Through this process I learned about galvanized steel, bonderized steel, stainless steel and copper. I chose stainless steel as it is more rust resistant and because I would not have to paint it every few years like I would need to with bonderized steel. Galvanized steel would rust too quickly with the sea air and copper cost too much for me. At installation, I asked him to rotate the seams for the spark arrestor collar and the welded part of the mesh to face the far right side of my property, away from my daily view (because they were not the best looking sides of the spark arrestor), and he had no problem with my request. Sean also helped me solve my bird problems with gluing bird spikes onto the chimney chase cover and onto the top of the spark arrestor cap. He is reasonably priced but most of all, he knows his craft and does it right the first time! read more
