We just had our two fireplaces serviced by Scott from Montecito Chimney Service. The damper inside one chimney had been stuck in the open position for several years. The last person to service it, said it couldn't be fixed so he put a damper at the top of the chimney. That retrofit damper broke and I thought Scott would just replace it with a new one. Instead, Scott worked on the original damper and got it to work again! He then put a simple cap/spark arrester on the top of the chimney. We are thrilled to have this working properly again! Scott also checked and swept both of our chimneys. Scott was punctual, quoted prices in advance and adhered to them, is very friendly and knowledgeable, and he did a great job. We just moved in and it was inspected but he found what the inspector missed and even had the parts in his van to do the repair while here. What a flake Scott turned out to be. After promising to come and do our chimney work, he rescheduled three times (!). This had us waiting at home for three entire days. A few days before Christmas (when he knew we'd be using our fireplaces), he abruptly canceled entirely. He said it was "too far for him to drive" -- even though I'd previously agreed to pay him an extra $50 for his mileage! First Scott told us he'd be in our town on a certain day and would come then. He rescheduled, but said he'd be nearby on another day and would make us his first stop. We waited patiently. He didn't show up then either. Why? He decided to go to a garage sale (!). He rescheduled a third time, and by late afternoon on the day of his promised arrival, I finally phoned him - and he said he wasn't going to come at all! As I was telling him about our three days of waiting, he rudely talked right through me, and when my wife called him back, he claimed "I told you about a hundred times I wasn't going to come!" No, he told us he WAS coming -- three times. Scott repeatedly shined us on, made us miss a holiday party to wait for him, and finally was a no-show. In our experience, he was completely unprofessional and couldn't care less about inconveniencing customers. I want to warn people off Scott and Montecito Chimney Service. We live in Oak View, and were dismayed by experience with (and reviews of) our local chimney/fireplace services, so called Scott who is 45 minutes away. Yes there is an extra travel fee, but well worth it. Scott cleaned and assessed our two fireplaces and gave us excellent advice regarding a potentially dangerous situation with one of them. He even spray painted the surround and replaced the lava rock in our old gas log set which made things look much better. Excellent, knowledgeable service which goes above and beyond at a fair price. Scott is a knowledgable guy and did a great job. I just moved here from Sacramento. I wasn't sure what kind of condition my chimney was in so I chose Scott because of the other positive reviews. I found out my flew is rusted open because there was a rain cap that didn't fit right, or one had been missing for years, but that it was at least rusted in the open position. He put on a proper stainless steel cap. I also had him install a gas burning log set and it looks great. He's a very nice and hard working man. I'm happy with his service. read more
