The Navy Yard is a strange place. It feels like a gated community, like a government research facility. The dedicated buses and "no trespassing" signs add to the mystique. Of course, since it was/is a loading dock, it's not very pedestrian friendly. There's only one entrance on the Flushing Ave side, so you may end up backtracking to get to the building you're looking for. The fences are super beat up and a lot of the roads were also under construction, so it really has that old school Brooklyn feel.

This place was just.....cool. No it's not close to anything really, but if you ever, ever, find yourself in or around the yard, please, take some time to stroll around, get lost in the industrial coast. There's even a bar, right outside the washington ave. entrance by Flushing, that looks straight out of 1978, and decidedly not New York-like. There's a Chinese take out place outside as well, for lunch i guess. You walk inside, and basically it's just building after building of unmarked brick and sheet metal and the coast. It'd be an absolutely terrific place to film, and they even have a studio, Steiner Studios, with five or six huge stages. I want to come back and really get lost here; the fear and adrenaline of really not knowing your orientation or exactly where you are in such a massive yard like this (there has got to be hundreds of buildings with only a few entrances/exits) would be really, really tantalizing. It's one of those places where you go and you're like "this is massive, this is industrial, this is mechanical, this is an ENVIRONMENT". And yet, at the same time, it's so old, with the brick wall encasing it, that it's got that feel of 1900 industry, with 1970s ships, and the sheen of metal and sounds of brute force machines working during the day, and creaking at night.

Out in California lovely rotting urban decay is nonchalantly fenced off which is essentially an open invitation to the urban photographer; but the absurd protection of such sites in New York would make you think these abandon building were filled gold or drugs or something. So after years of longing peering at the Navy Yards through the fences I finally shelled out $30 to take the Brooklyn Historical Society's Bus Tour; a seemingly hefty price made perfectly fair by our totally awesome tour guide Adam Schwartz who shares a love of history and the semi-legal exploration of it (though everything on the tour was legit). While many of the building have been restored for commercial use http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/iPuKugRa6wH8-rqqgtC1CA?select=7FPM7p1J4gedVJxCZjiJRg , some still stand as massive rusting warehouses for nothing http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/iPuKugRa6wH8-rqqgtC1CA?select=3zIdloP53wd_XapexphASA filled with forgotten tools and buttons http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/iPuKugRa6wH8-rqqgtC1CA?select=_26o9XB7fhFF6p-thWkL5g with weathered train tracks to nowhere http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/iPuKugRa6wH8-rqqgtC1CA?select=bX7HCSBi59Pk9SE4KPxDsQ and forever damp room where children use to play http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/iPuKugRa6wH8-rqqgtC1CA?select=Hn13YS1lu0YkriKY_AuEBw We also went "technically" off the yards and into the adjacent hospital grounds where shimmering white marble peeks out between the thick overgrowth http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/iPuKugRa6wH8-rqqgtC1CA?select=bd7SsiWNGDCEVVVuJ_s3aA While the Navy Yards are not the most exciting thing ever, there was plenty for my camera happy hands to collect... although I wish I had had more time to get down and dirty off the beaten path, so if anyone has access to the yards (winking at Briana)...

They often host free events and can be rented for parties, dinners and receptions. Overlook is a gorgeous space with floor to ceiling windows and skylights. It overlooks the Bryant Park skating rink, Winter Village and has views of the surrounding buildings. The views here are AMAZING!!! I recently attended one of their free yoga classes as part of their Winter Fitness program. The space is pretty large and comfortably held the 40 or so attendees the night I attended yoga. We all were informed beforehand to bring our own mats and towels as these would not be provided. The yoga sessions are run by different yoga companies and the one I attended was by Sputnik Yoga and was a silent headphone yoga session. We each were provided, free of charge, headphones to wear during class. This was my first time attending a session like this but had a blast! The headphones took a bit getting used to, but I loved that you could clearly hear the teacher during the class. They also played some cool music while helping to block out all other sounds. This really helped me focus on the movement and the instructions. The class was an open level Vinyasa but the movements and flow were slightly advance. It was quite a workout and I was sweaty by the end. After class, we were each given wipes to sanitize the headphones and our mats. Then we all took selfies in this beautiful space and one final group picture, which they posted on their Instagram account. This was by far the coolest yoga class I've ever taken. I've been telling all of my friends and co-workers about it and have already signed up for some of their upcoming classes. Overlook offers other types of activities like Meditation, Ribbon Dancing, Barre classes and Story time for kids. It is a great place to watch the skaters below and enjoy Bryant Park's free activities. I highly recommend trying them out.

The event location offers sweeping views of the Hudson River, the Vessel, and a good deal of Manhattan and New Jersey's Gold Coast. The areas are supposed to be customizable, and I recently attended a party on the 21st floor. The space was more limited than I had expected, but I think it might have been configured as such. For instance, according to its website, it could fit up to 150 guests for a cocktail party or 20-120 guests for a seated dinner, but this setup held about 60-70 patrons. However, it was able to accommodate a coat check, a bar, a DJ station, a photo booth, and a few couches, while still allowing room for attendees to gather in groups and servers to pass out hors d'oeuvres. The party I attended was catered by Abigail Kirsch, and the food was fabulous in both taste and quantity. So, while the Glasshouse Chelsea is pretty far west and not the most convenient, its ability to set the scene for a great event makes it worth the trip, either as an organizer/planner or as an attendee.
