First time visiting Brooklyn, New York, and I wanted to check out a cat café. This one came up as the most popular and closest, so I decided to swing by. I went on a weekend. At first, I misheard the lady at the front desk and thought it was $50 for a half hour -- I said I'd think about it and left. Came back a bit later, signed the online waiver, and realized I had misheard her: the price was actually $15 for a half hour. Much better deal. Since this was my first cat café, I was a little nervous. I tried petting an orange tabby near the front window, and it swiped at me -- scratch or bite, not sure -- so I backed off. I spent more time with the friendlier cats and especially loved one named Spider Pig (pictured). That cat was wonderful, and if I were local, I'd have adopted it on the spot. Staff confirmed all cats here are adoptable, which is a big plus. Toward the end of my session, I went back to the orange tabby. I saw another visitor offering their hand, and the cat nibbled without really hurting them. So I did the same: open hand, calm gesture. Sure enough, it bit and scratched me a little -- playful, not painful, no blood. I think maybe it's teething, or just a cat with strong boundaries. Didn't want head pats, but seemed interested in grabbing hands. Overall, a great first-time cat café experience. The price was fair, the nonprofit mission is fantastic, and the fact that all cats are adoptable makes the visit worthwhile beyond just the fun. Spider Pig especially stole the show for me. Five stars. Thank you, Brooklyn Cat Café, for the unique experience. Last visited: August 23, 2025

Took the kids here during spring break because even tho we have cats at home, we love that this cat cafe is a non profit helping cats find homes! I was happily surprised to see they also have rabbits and turtles! We tried to add on as much as possible in terms of buying snacks and drinks for humans and treats for cats, to give some extra monetary support to this great place. All the people working there were super pleasant, the animals seem happy and we really loved our visit. We will be back!

I normally don't write reviews, but I feel compelled after seeing how this organization handled a volunteer and how they responded when people tried to call it out. Recently, a volunteer named Luna shared screenshots of emails she received from the coordinator, Sonja, and the founder. Another reviewer here already described her story in detail and attached those screenshots, so I won't repeat everything--but what stood out to me was that the organization openly admitted they acted on an "educated guess" when accusing Luna of being hostile. When she tried to explain and defend herself, the response was dismissive, personal, and unprofessional. Instead of taking responsibility for a mistake, management doubled down and framed her defense as resignation. When I wrote a Google review about this situation, the owner responded not by addressing the evidence (the emails Luna herself posted), but by deflecting and attacking me personally. They insisted I was "friends" with Luna, even though I have never met her--I only read her story online. Their response was to shame me, rather than provide any proof that Luna was in the wrong. Such defensiveness tells me a lot about how they deal with criticism. (I attached my review and the response I get in the screenshot). To be clear: I have not volunteered or visited this cafe, and after seeing how they treat volunteers and how they respond to community feedback, I would never want to. Cute cats don't make up for dismissive, unprofessional management. If this is how they speak to people who give their time and effort for free, I can only imagine what the culture behind the scenes must be like.

This cat cafe is good. It's nice service, but the cats are rowdy. I would come back again. This cat cafe is good. It's nice service, but the cats are rowdy. I would come back again.

Booked online! Super easy! The girls at the front are very nice and I enjoyed my time here Restrooms are super clean and also it doesn't smell like cats here you can tell the cats are chill and happy I really enjoyed how they had other rodents in the back they were cute!! I loved looking at all the hiding spots the cats chose lol Will come back next time I'm in town:)

Super cool fun place to visit! So much fun! And all for a good cause! Helping out animals in need. All cats are available for adoption. It costs $10 for half and hour for timed tickets. The time goes so fast, I suggest buying an hour. You need to pre-order slots online to get in. Also make sure to sign the online waiver, which is for any possible injuries caused by the cats. I've found most of them to be super duper friendly and oh so cute. The more possibly aggressive cats are indicated by a red collar. But I played with them and they seemed quite friendly. Small children should be careful though. They also sell treats to feed the cats. All the workers here were so helpful and nice. Atmosphere. It feels like hanging out in a cozy loungy comfy cafe! There is no people food here though. There are sofas and seating all around, so get comfy and hang out with cats! They are free to wander around, sniffing, playing and looking to be petted. There are a mix of adult cats and little kittens. There are lots of different active cats to play with, unlike some other cat cafes that only had a few and half of them only wanted to sleep. If you are looking to adopt a cat/ kitten, this place is a great place to look. You can play with the cats and see if there is a connection. So many cute faces here. Hard to resist. Final note: A nice way to spend an afternoon! Come by and play with some cats and maybe adopt 1 or 2 cuties and give them a home! This is also close to the Brooklyn promenade. So check out the great views of the city, after your visit to the cafe.

This is an awesome way to spend a rainy Friday. All of the cats were asleep (I would be too, blame it on the weather lol) Please donate if you can! These kitties deserve it. Thank you to the volunteers too!

Cutest cafe I've ever been too, didn't get any drinks or anything but didn't matter to me. The staff were super sweet, funny, and even though they had to run us through some safety procedures and information they made sure we knew it wouldn't take from our time. The cats were super sweet and will all flies over to you if you have treat's. I didn't buy any treats and decided to directly donate to them instead but if your patient you will still find cats to hangout with. My only tips are fine a nice seat and let the cats approach you, if Ricky or Kraken is still there make sure to show them some extra love and consider adopting! Also come early to your appointment time because it seems to get a bit more busy as time goes on and it might be a bit harder to find a place to sit. All in all definitely consider stopping by to give these cats and staff the love they deserve!

Do they serve any food/drinks in this cat cafe?

You can make an appointment at the door if they have space but you have to make an appointment either way.

They don't have human food, only cat food. I'm assuming it's good for the cats.

How is it to adopt a cat and what's the process of adopting one as well?

Can I pet the cats without ordering food?

Not at all, you can just go there and sign the forms before you go in

How old do you have to be to play with the cats? And do you need a parent to go with you if you are under 18?

They were advertising a specific pick up and drop off date for the animals for this program, but i wanted to participate for a bit longer so I called a few days before to see if they're able to accommodate. The staff who answered didn't know the answer so they took down my info and told me someone would call me back. Days passed and I didn't hear back so I had to make a trek down there to ask in-person so that was a bit inconvenient. I wanted some time to prep my home. Anyway when I let them know that I'm a beginner foster and would prefer a cat that is generally friendly with no behavior problems, they helped me match with an adorable adult cream kitty. I picked her up with no issues. They provided me with all the supplies (and more) that I'd need for my week-long foster commitment. They also provided a number that I could text with any concerns should any issues come up. My whole experience was very positive. I'm glad to see that they have now expanded their program with allowing folks to take a dog out for a walk. I've seen further Instagram posts posting about these excursion experiences, but I think you have to come early during the day as only a limited number of dogs are eligible candidates daily. I've done similar excursions at Sean Casey in Brooklyn (no appointment necessary) and ACC (booking required a few days in advance online) so I'm excited this opportunity exists here in a more centrally located place in Manhattan. The shelter also allows visitors to come and view and play with their cats. You just need to make sure you wash your hands before interacting with them. I love this but also hope this doesn't overwhelm the cats too much.

I came back an hour or so later and she was in the process of getting adopted :,) happy for her but sad for me. It's ok! I just thought that maybe it wasn't meant to be. A week later, I came back to Best Friends with my boyfriend on a mission to adopt a cat. They had an additional room towards the back that housed kittens!!! There were so many to choose from. We chose Juni because she was very cuddly and had a little quirky mustache. The staff made the adoption process so quick and easy. They even provided us a care package with all the necessities (kitten litter, wet and dry food). I expressed my concerns about introducing Juni to our cat at home, and they provided a step by step guide. They even followed up 2 weeks later with our progress. The employees and volunteers here really love what they do.

What's more frustrating is how much control they want compared to other shelters. Most adoption processes are more straightforward--this one involves initial contact, a lengthy application, an interview that feels invasive, and a two-week trial period where they decide if you're good enough. This isn't standard across the industry, and honestly, it's a deterrent. Worst part? She did all this knowing the cat would stay in the shelter. AMA works strictly with sick, abused, and neglected cats and dogs (although I'm completely a cat person), which is more up my alley than working with perfectly healthy animals (my cat is special needs - he's three legged, so that's how I got into working with sick/special needs animals). I've been with AMA for about six months now, and while I wish I had discovered this rescue first, I unfortunately came across Animal Haven first (AMA all the way - AMA is much cleaner and nicer than Animal Haven). AMA is my favorite Brooklyn shelter, and I know people who have adopted from or volunteer/work at other Brooklyn shelters and have somewhat of an attitude when it should be about the animals in need and not about one's ego. Yeah the adoption fees here at AMA are mandatory (unlike the ASPCA where I also foster - they have voluntary adoption fees based on what you can afford; nothing is required besides being a good quality adopter in the eyes of the adoption team there) and higher than you'll see elsewhere, but the animals are genuinely cared for and loved here. The adoption fees aren't the highest in the NYC area for cats and dogs, but they're higher than most other shelters that I know of. It's hard to not get attached to some of the animals there, and I can name a handful of cats that I've grown attached to since the end of March when I came into the shelter for my first shift: Chewy, Spring, Autumn, Tiny, Puff, Kiki, Sushi, Chili, Maple, and my foster, Muffin. It's hard watching them get adopted, but it's also super exciting to see them find where they belong. Here are some final words - if you like cleaning, socializing, meeting new people in person, having some form of structure to your week, and getting out of the house, then you should volunteer in person at the shelter. If working with too many animals at once is overwhelming to you but you still want to help out, consider fostering - AMA covers 100% of costs (including vet visits which any animal lover knows can get expensive), and Mariya is always available to talk to if you need help.
