I am so lucky to have adopted darling Penny at KittyKind in Union Square in New York She is still cautious but is out and about and exploring everything. I can't say enough good things about Allie and her team of KittyKind volunteers especially Gina for letting me cry on her shoulder and helping and encouraging me and Jean for helping me shop for things I needed and carrying Penny to the Uber for me. I will never forget their kindness. Kathryn

I adopted my wonderful little boy Omega here, but I would never return for another. I talked to one of the staff members quite a lot during the process and afterwards, and I'm sorry to say that certain members of the organization seem to care more about their egos than the animals - even though they're supposedly volunteering in order to help the animals. After 11 to 12 years together, my first two indoor-only cats, the loves of my life, passed away within several months of each other. Not long after, I adopted a little guy named Spot and was searching for a companion for him. I really had a rapport with Lauren and enjoyed working with her at first. But what followed was horrific. Lauren and Patricia had found pill bottles in my bathroom. I had been switching medications, and so had multiple vials in a plastic box. The vials were closed, but the box should have been sealed, which I readily acknowledge. Patricia escaped to the car, and Lauren, who remained, approached me like I was a criminal. I don't exaggerate here. They didn't know what the medications were, but perhaps felt that only complete lunatics take medications - for anything. In a later conversation, months later, Lauren doubled-down, indicating that people who take medications - possibly for anything - deserve to be treated with great suspicion. I was told by Lauren that I would be allowed to foster Omega, I think only because it was a long journey and Omega was already in my apartment. I could adopt him if he did well with my other little boy, Spot. Or perhaps if the staff members could somehow convince themselves that I wasn't a complete whacko. I suppose that to them, anyone who takes medication - for anything - is likely too unstable to adopt. I don't think they would disagree. Over the next two weeks, Lauren went back and forth between asking when I was going to come in to sign in the adoption agreement and then backtracking and asking why I was in such a hurry. Whatever the reasons for it, the game playing was unfair to me and to Omega. I was eventually allowed to sign the adoption agreement, thankfully. And then the story gets worse. After about two weeks with me, Omega became severe nauseous and started vomiting. He was lethargic and obviously uncomfortable. Both Lauren and Patricia acted surprisingly unconcerned when I told them and they discouraged me from getting him medical care - especially Patricia. I'm a bit of a worrier, indeed, but their reaction was pretty shocking. After I looked at the adoption agreement, I knew the likely reason - KittyKind is supposed to cover medical care for a number of days after an adoption agreement is signed. Interestingly enough, Lauren initially told me that Omega did not have a history of vomiting. Months later, as I write my review, she has revealed that Omega suffered from vomiting before he came to me. She knew before. She claimed she'd told me this. However, she maintained, the severe vomiting and lethargy that I described shouldn't merit a visit to the doctor, anyway. And this woman is supposed to be an animal lover? I'm a good father to my cats and I wonder the extent to which they mistreat other good parents. It makes me sad that a lot of incredible little ones might miss out on good homes because some of the staff members care more about feeling pleased with themselves than finding good homes for the cats. There are a lot of adoption agencies out there, and I really hope that my story encourages you to try others instead.

**BE SURE TO GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE AND CLICK THROUGH TO THE "FILTERED REVIEWS." OVER 100 REVIEWS AND MOST OF THEM ARE 5-STAR** I am so thankful for the work that KittyKind does. Not only because I found my two awesome cats through this organization, but because they are committed to truly rescuing cats - they are a "no-kill" group and work tirelessly (ALL VOLUNTEERS, mind you!) to find forever homes for their rescues. I adopted Stella in July of 2008. She was an older kitty who lost her home of many years and was quite shy in her cage. She had seemingly been looked over by other adopters in favor of younger, more energetic kittens. The KittyKind adoption rep. pointed her out to me and allowed me to hold her for a few moments. The very second that Stella landed in my arms, she began purring and nuzzling into my neck. No question, she was meant for me! After completing the adoption process, I brought Stella home and she has only grown more and more cuddly and energetic! She is one clever and curious gal. In fact, after about 8 months, I was worried that she was actually becoming bored while I was off at work all day, so I started to think about getting a second cat so she would have a companion. I went back to KittyKind in March of 2009 and talked to the adoption rep. about finding a good companion for Stella. She pointed out a few kitties and after "meeting" each of them, I went home to think it over and came back to adopt a big, goofy orange tabby named Rufus. He won me over by flopping over in his cage and insisting on a belly rub! I brought Rufus home and spent a couple of weeks introducing him to Stella (who did not care for him one bit at first). Stella finally came around and decided that Rufus would be an acceptable new roommate and now they chase each other around, play together, and play "king of the hill" on my lap (Stella always wins). I love my kitties so much and am so thankful for KittyKind, and all of its tremendous volunteers, for bringing them into my life. Check out the photo of my two little hams, Stella & Rufus. :-)

Kitty Kind is a wonderful organization. They brought me one of my greatest joys in life - my kitty Albus. The volunteers at Kitty Kind really took the adoption process seriously and I could tell how important it was for them for all of their cats to find good homes. We saw little Albus in a crate by himself at Petco one day and asked about the cute little black and white kitten. From the get go they were fantastic about answering every question we had and making sure we could provide the little guy with the best home possible. We had all of his shots etc. and they even paid for his first vet visit since he had little cold when we adopted him. I was very impressed with how they checked up to make sure everything was going well and gave us great advice on how to take care of our first cat. I am so happy to have had the experience with Kitty Kind and would recommend anyone adopt from them. Life just wouldn't be as good without our cat and I have Kitty Kind to thank for that.

Manny- adopted 9/07 at Kitty Kind

Our 1 year old male Tabby, Manny, was adopted at Kitty Kind in Sept. 07. Manny was apparently found wandering the streets in Flatbush, and was dewormed, neutered, and cleared for Feline AIDS and leukemia before he made it out onto the adoption floor. We went to Kitty Kind because they were the only agency we could find that didn't require a copy of our lease with a clause saying that cats were allowed. We had a verbal agreement with our landlord, but our lease said "No Pets." And we felt that asking him to write us a letter would be pushing it. I can't lie, the fist few months were expensive. Manny had giardia, ear mites and ring worm (a skin fungus) on one ear that showed-up about 4 weeks after we'd gotten him. Our vet (North Side Vetrinary Clinic in Williamsburg) helped us clear it all up, and now he's our healthy, happy, cuddly, playful, sometimes annoying as hell, love-cat. Kitty Kind may have crazy cat ladies working there, and may not be most reputable place to adopt in nyc....we would have chosen The Humane Society or BARK if we could have, but we lucked-out and ended up with a really fantastic cat. (See his adorably handsome mug in Kitty Kind photos)

Super conveniently located off the ACE line too at Canal St. They provide all the materials and your preference and they help match you with a furry friend. They were advertising a specific pick up and drop off date for the animals for this program, but i wanted to participate for a bit longer so I called a few days before to see if they're able to accommodate. The staff who answered didn't know the answer so they took down my info and told me someone would call me back. Days passed and I didn't hear back so I had to make a trek down there to ask in-person so that was a bit inconvenient. I wanted some time to prep my home. Anyway when I let them know that I'm a beginner foster and would prefer a cat that is generally friendly with no behavior problems, they helped me match with an adorable adult cream kitty. I picked her up with no issues. They provided me with all the supplies (and more) that I'd need for my week-long foster commitment. They also provided a number that I could text with any concerns should any issues come up. My whole experience was very positive. I'm glad to see that they have now expanded their program with allowing folks to take a dog out for a walk. I've seen further Instagram posts posting about these excursion experiences, but I think you have to come early during the day as only a limited number of dogs are eligible candidates daily. I've done similar excursions at Sean Casey in Brooklyn (no appointment necessary) and ACC (booking required a few days in advance online) so I'm excited this opportunity exists here in a more centrally located place in Manhattan. The shelter also allows visitors to come and view and play with their cats. You just need to make sure you wash your hands before interacting with them. I love this but also hope this doesn't overwhelm the cats too much.

I came back an hour or so later and she was in the process of getting adopted :,) happy for her but sad for me. It's ok! I just thought that maybe it wasn't meant to be. A week later, I came back to Best Friends with my boyfriend on a mission to adopt a cat. They had an additional room towards the back that housed kittens!!! There were so many to choose from. We chose Juni because she was very cuddly and had a little quirky mustache. The staff made the adoption process so quick and easy. They even provided us a care package with all the necessities (kitten litter, wet and dry food). I expressed my concerns about introducing Juni to our cat at home, and they provided a step by step guide. They even followed up 2 weeks later with our progress. The employees and volunteers here really love what they do.

It felt more like an interrogation than a genuine conversation. Instead of assessing whether I could provide a good home, she seemed focused on finding a reason to say no. What's more frustrating is how much control they want compared to other shelters. Most adoption processes are more straightforward--this one involves initial contact, a lengthy application, an interview that feels invasive, and a two-week trial period where they decide if you're good enough. This isn't standard across the industry, and honestly, it's a deterrent. Worst part? She did all this knowing the cat would stay in the shelter. I already have experience, a safe home, and was willing to adopt an older cat. If someone else truly wanted the cat, I'd be fine with that--I just wanted to see an animal get a home. AMA works strictly with sick, abused, and neglected cats and dogs (although I'm completely a cat person), which is more up my alley than working with perfectly healthy animals (my cat is special needs - he's three legged, so that's how I got into working with sick/special needs animals). I've been with AMA for about six months now, and while I wish I had discovered this rescue first, I unfortunately came across Animal Haven first (AMA all the way - AMA is much cleaner and nicer than Animal Haven). AMA is my favorite Brooklyn shelter, and I know people who have adopted from or volunteer/work at other Brooklyn shelters and have somewhat of an attitude when it should be about the animals in need and not about one's ego. Yeah the adoption fees here at AMA are mandatory (unlike the ASPCA where I also foster - they have voluntary adoption fees based on what you can afford; nothing is required besides being a good quality adopter in the eyes of the adoption team there) and higher than you'll see elsewhere, but the animals are genuinely cared for and loved here. The adoption fees aren't the highest in the NYC area for cats and dogs, but they're higher than most other shelters that I know of. It's hard to not get attached to some of the animals there, and I can name a handful of cats that I've grown attached to since the end of March when I came into the shelter for my first shift: Chewy, Spring, Autumn, Tiny, Puff, Kiki, Sushi, Chili, Maple, and my foster, Muffin. It's hard watching them get adopted, but it's also super exciting to see them find where they belong. Here are some final words - if you like cleaning, socializing, meeting new people in person, having some form of structure to your week, and getting out of the house, then you should volunteer in person at the shelter. If working with too many animals at once is overwhelming to you but you still want to help out, consider fostering - AMA covers 100% of costs (including vet visits which any animal lover knows can get expensive), and Mariya is always available to talk to if you need help.
