I was at the Diet and Fitness Center (DFC) for over 6 weeks. I had come to DFC with medical…read moreconcerns and had been very overweight. DFC helped me to lose a lot of weight. This was really important to me and therefore I think my stay was, overall, a success. DFC is a great program on paper (lots of quality people, good food, not a fad diet place at all), but having spent a pretty long time there, I now feel that the program itself has some serious issues which cannot be ignored. There shortcomings involved the staff, including the Director (Dr. Sha), facilities, and even fellow patients. DFC patients plan all of their daily meals based on their recommended calorie intake. So, the meals served at DFC are key ingredients in your potential success. Imagine my surprise when I encountered the incompetence of the cafeteria staff who served us our calorie-controlled DFC meals! There were, routinely, foul-ups of the portions or the foods we had calculated following DFC protocols. Sometimes food offered on the menu was out-of-stock, sometimes the wrong quantities were given, sometimes the cafeteria servers did not know what to do. I pointed out these concerns to the staff but pretty much nothing got fixed. It was distressing. The gym facilities include a variety of workout machines and a salt-water pool. The salt-water was a nice surprise, which I enjoyed. The gym machines (which are heavily used), however were not the most modern or up-to-date. I work out at a gym where I live in the midwest and I was surprised to see that several pieces of equipment are more modern than what DFC has. In addition, I had reported a hygiene problem concerning the presence of little black flies in the showers in the mens' locker room to staff, including to Dr. Sha, but even after several weeks, the flies were still there. While many DFC patients are serious about losing weight and provide a supportive group atmosphere, others can become a little frustrated and try to undermine other patients' success. I, unfortunately, encountered this situation more than once. For instance, after I had started to lose significant amounts of weight, other program participants asked me to my face "why" I was at DFC and whether I belonged there. I replied that I had the same reason for being at DFC as they did, namely to develop healthy lifestyle patterns and improve my health. Many of the staff at DFC are really good, and contribute to a strong program with excellent support for those trying to lose weight. The nutrition department staff, for instance, serve as solid resources for any questions about food and are highly motivated. There are, however, shortcomings at DFC about which people need to be aware. Housing Tip: DFC does not provide housing, so one has to shop around for housing in Durham. Trinity Commons is right nearby DFC, but you over-pay for being able to walk to DFC. Other accommodations in Durham offer more things for the same, or lower, price, and also provide daily shuttles to DFC.

A good, medically reviewed program but not for everyone…read more First let me say that the staff are very professional and the program is medically sound. Not a fad diet program. That said, the program may be frustrating for those who are younger, are a bit more physically active already, or not as overweight. The number of exercise classes could be increased to provide more options for those seeking a more challenging or intense work out. There are some good ones(boot camp, cardio circuit etc.) The lectures are helpful-especially regarding nutrition/portions/restaurant meals but if you are there for more then 2 weeks the classes repeat and it would be nice to have a greater number of offerings. Classes geared to the specific needs of younger clients would also be welcome. I found that I had a lot of down time and would have liked more structure. If you are not someone who will say "I have 3 hours of free time-I guess I should get on the treadmill or go swim some laps" you'll end up not doing much. Also-I understand that it is a temporary situation but sharing the facility with the Duke health and fitness center was annoying at times. For a younger person it gave the impression that you were in an assisted living/ retirement community. Not exactly a high energy vibe. Food is better then one might expect but there was always a off putting order in the dinning room that reminded me of hospital or other institutional kitchens. I'm not sure how to prevent that(more ventilation?) but it was really bothersome. Again, the program worked and I did lose lbs while there, and its a program that is realistic for maintaining at home, but if you're going to spend a lot of money and take time off it would be nice to have a more current and energizing feel. The atmosphere seemed more like a nursing home at times(why are there tables w/ jigsaw puzzles?)The class could be updated and expanded. Also-avoid staying at the Trinity Commons. While they are lovely units and conveniently located the manger seemed too aggressive and was uncomfortable to be around.

The administrator who I met seems to "RULE" over the place giving you the impression she is a piece of work to have to deal with. I am legal guardian to a man who turns 90 years old this year and suffers from dementia. Because of his dementia there are limited places he can stay. He and his wife were first in ROSE MANOR which had a problem keeping the place clean and the staff there steal from VISITORS. When his wife was alive they put a woman in her room who had a contagious disease which she caught and later died of something else but I am sure the other thing she got from there complicated things quite a bit.. I have seen people sitting in the hall reeking of number two and unattended until I went to go get someone. I did like the nurse Grace though. She was wonderful and the director there seemed caring but he did not run a tight enough ship to keep his patients in good health! I would not recommend them. Next they went to the super expensive CAROLINA HOUSE. Well first of all they are expensive as hell and they will charge you for everything including a tissue to blow your nose. I do have to say it is beautiful in there, like a high class hotel and my friends had a childhood friend in there but they both hated that place and frequently complained about everything. Once a person fell in his room and hit his head and called for help to which no one responded to the bell. I heard him yelling for help and was not sure which room he was in but I assumed someone would be there. Hearing people in their room with the door shut yelling for help was not uncommon. 45 min later I was walking down the hall and heard him still yelling for help so I went door to door to find him and he was in the room all bloody, with the help bell lit. He had fallen and hit his head and had a really nasty gash. I went and found someone and she claimed he must have just fell because she had just checked on him. LIE!! They also gave my friend a sandwich and when I opened it to give it to her there was a bite already taken out of it! I had to call social services on them twice for abuse of the man who never hurt a fly in his life. The lady passed away in her bed and they claimed they had just checked on her when I found her (sound familiar?) but she was already cold so I know they lied. I transferred him to Eno Pointe and I have to say this is the first time I have peace of mind. The director is Miss Doris and she is good. She is highly involved with the staff, I have seen her there all times of the day and evening so I know this is not just a 9-5 for her. Yes she does rule the place but she is very nice, personable and if you have a concern and speak to her about it she will handle it. She is on top of everything and that is a GOOD thing. There is not a lot of mess going on up there and if you do talk to the residents their only complaints are about their neglectful families who never visit. My friend is VERY happy where he is at now and its been a year, and I would highly recommend them. As for the nurses I prefer to deal with Dianne. Having said all that I must add it is not the prettiest or fanciest place but the time and attention goes into the patients and in my book that is a very fair trade off! If I had to start over I would have never wasted money on the other places. Just remember when you visit these places, they will do all they can to sway you that their place is the best but listening to people who have family/friends up there is important. Listen and look. Good luck in your search. Its a confusing process and often times you might have to do like I did and transfer before you find a place that fits.

We paid for a very high level of care for my mother during her last few months, but it was terrible. I found her on many occassions still in bed after pushing her call button for over 30 minutes for someone to help her. Sometimes she lay there for hours without anyone checking on her. We had to hire supplemental help. Some of the staff were very kind when you could find them. However, the turnover was constant. No one that was a good caregiver lasted over 45 days. They pay a measley $13.50 per hour, even though the cost to the residents is the most expensive in the area. They have so many empty beds. Do not put your loved ones here. It's such a shame. It is a beautiful facility and we expected so much more for this price. We would have care conferences and they would promise the moon and that everything would get better. It never did.

I brought my husband home with me for a family party. When he returned on Sunday night - his bedding was in the washing machine. Turns out it was there since Friday AM when I picked him up. They FORGOT to put it in the dryer and make his bed. So his sheets were mildewed and ruined. Thank goodness he had a spare set there So I could make his bed that night myself. We had extensive experience with hospitals and out-patient facilities over the years, both for our own needs, as well as those of family members. Hillcrest stands out as one of the very best facilities we've ever come across. The most important thing about Hillcrest may be the quality and commitment of its staff, from on-site doctors and nurses to the CNAs, OTs/PTs, maintenance (Mike) and other support staff. A special shout-out to Scott (OT), AnnMarie and Kris (PTs) for knowing when to push and when to back off, and to being so incredibly upbeat at every step. They are highly skilled and carry out their duties every day with a warm, welcoming and cheerful outlook that gives the center a rare, down-home feel. Nurses (Heather, Chantel, Mustapha) are really attentive and stop by to listen and chat about music; CNAs (Rhonda) even bring flowers from home when I've had a bad day. Apologies to those many staff I haven't named; you're all wonderful and made our stay worthwhile! Hillcrest's facilities are clean and airy. There are patios for getting some fresh air and well-equipped workout rooms to support rehab. Even the food at Hillcrest is worth writing home about!. Internet/WiFi access is spotty at best and is an area that needs attention. So, if you need a rehab facility for yourself, family or friends, you would do well to seek out Hillcrest. FYI, I think one of the key factors behind its consistently high ratings is that it's been family-owned and operated since it began operations in 1951. It retains a family vibe that other facilities owned and operated by equity partners, hedge funds and large chains lack.

The medication management appeared extremely regimented. It seems that the NPs uphold anti-psychotic drug use for the elderly with dementia. It stuns me that they do not consider the lack of research data on the elderly population with dementia. Most data do not advocate the use of these type of drugs due to the "risk of increased mortality". Maybe they do not care? To complicate the situation, the dose of drugs do not take into account my mother's size and weight. Basically, she is considered pediatric size. It seems that the drug dosing is made for the typical adult. Long story short, the NPs and Medical Director will not respond to the current drug challenges. It is unfortunate that there are drug alternatives, but the medical staff will not think "out of the box". I have made several phone calls to Hospice staff with no response. Do they care? Probably not. Last, the CNA is competent. That is the only positive thing I can recall at the present moment,.
