This was probably one of my favorite meals during my recent trip to Amsterdam. Not sure why since it was just a sandwich, but it was the best BLT sandwich ever! The outdoor dining does offer a waiter, so no need to order inside. The outdoor dining looks out over the water too! I had the ham and cheese sandwich, which I devoured as soon as it arrived. One of the best meals we had in Amsterdam! Perfect for brunch/lunch, the food is amazing, portions are huge, it's very close to central station. And to top it off it's really cheap! For 6 euros you get a large toasted sandwich (I got salami, onions, tomato, cheese) and a well-dressed salad with a healthy mix of vegetables. They have a wide variety of these sandwiches as well as various egg/omelette dishes that we didn't fry but looked great. The place was really busy but the staff were really friendly and delivered the food way quicker than expected. The food is absolutely amazing. We came here for breakfast early Sunday morning when hardly anyone was walking the streets. We both ordered the Suisse Omelette and cafe lattes. Delicious! The eggs had bacon and gruyere, and the omelette rested on a surprising large amount of delicious vegetables, including lettuce, tomatoes, spinach, onions, red peppers, corn and cucumbers. There was a side of ketchup and mayonnaise with onions (which I didn't know what it was, so I had to ask). Plus they give you a big piece of French bread and I also asked for some butter and jam. It's a lot of food so you probably won't need to eat for quite a few hours. What a fantastic way to start a Sunday, and right before going to church right down the street. This is the absolute perfect brunch cafe in Amsterdam! CASH ONLY They don't have seating inside but you can order take away if it's packed. Otherwise you have to wait until a table opens up. My friends and I were able to snag 2 tables right next to the canal which made for a PERFECT atmosphere. It was a late night, the night before. We hadn't eaten a lot after a hard night of partying and needed some fuel badly. The cafe itself is pretty small but there is some outside seating available near the canals, so the view was spectacular. My SO and I opted to stay inside near the kitchen which turned out to be a one man show that was going off furiously. I ordered the bacon on toast for my meal and, man, I was I not disappointed. The food arrived soon after on a massive plate: slices of bagette topped with eggs and bacon on the left, a huge salad on the right. Most impressive were the bagette slices themselves which were soft on the inside yet flakey on the outside. It was everything we needed to put something decent back into our bodies and the freshness was a welcome relief from the cheese heavy breakfasts we'd been eating earlier in the trip. As I found out later at the airport, the name of this type of dish is called uitsmijter and is an rather common breakfast dish. Oh I should mention that the staff was exceptionally nice, as most people in Amsterdam. They definitely helped make this simple meal one of my favorites. Beware though: they only take cash but the prices are extremely reasonable. read more

I will forever remember the meals my wife and I shared here. And this is the first spot I recommend friends visit in Amsterdam. We've had three different waiters, all great service and each meal we've shared has been excellent. However, by far our favorite is the goat cheese and walnut sandwich, served warm. We only had time for a few short meals on our whirlwind 24 hour trip to Amsterdam and I am so happy that I chose to come to Broodje Bert on the recommendations of all you fine Yelp folks. We arrived early on a Thursday morning and ordered two coffees, bacon and eggs and a brie and tomato open sandwich. Sitting down at two of the 7-8 seats in the establishment, we were able to check out our surroundings. Broodje is located on a corner next to the canal with all the seats facing out the windows to watch the world go by (on bikes I might add, lots of bikes). The meals arrived and my goodness were they huge! My sandwich was a short baguette served open face, covered in sliced tomatoes, peppers and brie. A fresh and colorful side salad occupied the rest of the plate. His had at least 4-5 eggs and was covered in beautiful thin sliced bacon with another baguette sliced below it all to soak up any of the runny orange yolks. I considered myself proud to eat half of my sandwich and my full salad. But the part that awed me the most was the cost after coming from Paris (or New York City). These easily could have sold for 12-15$ being the size they were. But no, only 5-6 euro each. Great deal for a filling meal first thing in the morning before you go exploring the city. It does get busy during the day, so you can avoid the crowd by coming when they open at 8am. I've had a good amount of items here and the were all perfect. Salami, Gouda Cheese, Tomato, & Onion sandwich was my favorite, coming out hot and melty. The Tuna Salad sandwich was really refreshing. The Burger is unconventional.. more like a meatball sandwich without marinara but still really good. I've been traveling around Europe for the past 3 months and this was my favorite breakfast/lunch spot I've come across. It was recommended by staff at our hostel. What a great spot! The restaurant itself is very tiny, but there is ample space for a group (I ate here with 6 friends) at the tables next to the canal. Lovely atmosphere for a (hungover) brunch. To speak about the food, everything is fresh. The portions are also massive - think American diner, if the American diner served eggs and veggies straight from the farmer's market. A few in the group got fried eggs (served with veggies and bread) and LOVED them. I enjoyed a boiled egg, tomato, mayo sandwich which was served on delicious baguette with a bright salad. The flavor was wonderful. Though I must warn, the sandwich is difficult to eat with your hands. This sandwich is definitely worth a bit of a mess. As far as value goes, by far the best: all of us walked out with smiles and full bellies, having only spent around 8 euro a piece for lunch and drinks.
