After all, it's got a swish octagonal clock outside and a Dean Martin quote, "If you drink, don't drive, don't even putt", plastered above the door. That constitutes fancy in my eyes. It's somewhat surprising therefore to be met with a fairly underwhelming interior, the sort which would suggest it was actually Dean "Deano" Martin from Govanhill who'd uttered the aforementioned line. It's not that Finlay's is a bad bar, far from it, it's just that it's an ordinary bar, with reasonable prices and football on TV. Complemented by good, hearty cheap food it's a nice local boozer and a welcoming enough place to catch a match. There is also entertainment offered on Fridays (disco) and Saturdays (karaoke). One noticeable aspect of the establishment, however, was the disproportionate number of misters to sisters. Again, in complete contrast with the outside of the pub, this place seemed to be one for the men, on a Sunday afternoon anyway, with the one and only lady in the premises sitting idly by as her male companion was glued to Bolton Vs Arsenal, a game I'm sure he was not particularly bothered about. Now that really is amore.

I don't think I have ever seen more than 5 people in the place except for football days. The food is not to shabby if I'm completely honest, and there was a seating area for the food so that you were not sitting around the bar area. Personally it's not a bar I would usually go into I'm 28 years old and wanting a bit more of a upbeat bar but for a quiet one with the in laws it was ok. Bar staff were great and always cracking jokes and smiling. Place was clean and even have WiFi for the customers like most places now. Big TVs located around the bar but not in the seating food area.

I want to say positive things about the food but I have to say that I'm not a fan, it's all unhealthy stuff & if you do get any veg/salad it's not great. I recently had "steak pie" which to my disappointment was an actual pie (not steak with a puff pastry on top) maybe my fault for not knowing or asking prior to ordering. Left pretty hungry because I didn't eat much of it. I definitely would eat more often in here if the menu was more exciting. The staff are all very nice and welcoming. Place is dog friendly which is a big selling point for myself as I have a big german shepherd who quite enjoys socialising locally. Would give it 5 stars but the food kinda lets it down but worth a visit when your in the area

I paid the +/-11:50GB Pounds, in advance. Instead of the tasty Pizza which I had been expecting I was served up a Thin Ciabatta Bread with Peperoni on it. Tasty as it was, it was like a starter instead of the Mains Pizza I had previously had. When the matter was brought to the attention of the acting management I was informed that the complaint would "be brought to the attention of Upstairs management". As I was hungry at the time and had paid in advance I ate the food but was underwhelmed by the portion of food for the price and therefore cannot recommend it at this time.

The night itself wasn't organised by the bar but someone outwith who hosts a regular music showcase. The evening felt very uorganised, and although, little of this is down to Sweeney's, the staff were of little help. We arrived early. The decor is eclectic, the pub definitely has a personal touch. I really liked the musical and instrument motifs by the stage area. There's also some quirky signs by the bar. Although, it did all a bit funky and mismatched to me. When we walked in, instruments in hand, we made our way from one half of the bar to the other; one which has the stage. Although the bar staff in the first room had explained we'd to head through to the second, nobody welcomed us or explained what would be happening when we got there. Other than a heckle from some folks at a table and a 'What will you be playing for us?!', we were left to it. We took a seat and, noticing no other instrument-in-hand folks, wandered exactly what the plan was. So we ordered drinks, and then I introduced myself and the band. At this point, more musicians were in the bar. Phew! The barman explained that the person who runs the night was running late. Understandably not their fault, what could they do? But then time went on and on. And there was no update from the bar. We just waited and waited. We'd presumed we were first since it had been listed that way without a mention of running times but after waiting till after the night should have begun (when the organiser finally arrived), we found out we were second. By this point, we just wanted to play; play and go home. In addition, the monitor mix wasn't great and the organiser had mistakenly thought there was two of us, so Sweeney's only paid two of us for performing. The general feeling was that there's venues out there doing amazing things for local music. The best and memorable gigs for us have had great hosts behind them. We just didn't feel this way about Sweeney's, and that's a pity.

I've recently upgraded my review to 5 stars for the following reasons: -friendly locals -super cheap prices -10 real ales available at a time (from just £1.65 a pint)

Horrible place for food…read more I'm not a big fan of Wetherspoons in general, but this one seems by far the worst I've been in. It was packed, so hard to find a seat, but I'd expected it. Sat at the very back in individual stalls, the lighting was so hard on the eyes, and dark, that I immediately regretted coming there.. No wifi or phone reception in the place, plus no music. I ordered the chicken burger with avocado with a side of coleslaw, a porn star martini and a raspberry mojito. The food was bland, Wetherspoons average, the coleslaw side was miniscule for the 95p price, everything tasted quite greasy and fatty. The drinks tasted like really strong undiluted fruit juice, both seemed to be made from some sort of syrup/premix (the mojito had no actual mint leaves in it). I do get, that it's all cheap pub grub and I wasn't expecting anything fancy, but the whole atmosphere of the place just made ma anxious and I couldn't wait to finish my meal and get out of there! There are much nicer places in Shawlands to go for food, so won't be back and won't be recommending this place to anyone either.
