However, it is a place that is best enjoyed in the evenings, as it is making a real effort to offer something different for Shawlands. Monday night has a computer game tournament, and there is live music from Thursday through to Sunday- Sunday being an open mic night, that usually serves up some local comedy. Friday and Saturday see it turn into a trendy pub, with a graduate aged crowd: busy, but the screens have Sex and the City all Friday night and the atmosphere is lively and safe. The actual fittings are swish: this has been a comedy venue in the past, and retains some of that cool atmosphere. The last time I went in, it still had canvases of comedians up on high. It's also possible to escape the crowds by going to their balcony. At the least, it gives a clear view of the action downstairs. The bands are local and mostly do covers. Saturday is blues night, there is a DJ on the Tuesday evening, with cocktails on special.

This was indeed a special wee Yelp outing as these don't happen very often. I was looking forward to my Caribbean treat and meeting up with my fellow Yelpers. I managed to find the Southside by train to Queen's Park Station and it's only a 5 minutes hop, skip and jump to The Rum Shack. I was unfortunately in still a bit of pain from the Kiltwalk so think I didn't get to enjoy the experience as much as I had hoped. We were seated on stools at 2 separate high tables. I think I was craving a normal seat, which are available by the way. The menu had a fairly nice varied choice of Caribbean dishes, some with a Scottish twist. So I opted for the Haggis Balls to kick off this food night. The starter was absolutely delicious, the sauce wasn't too hot and with a pleasant amount of sweetness to compliment my balls. Oh yeah! OK, so they were actually "fritters". I felt some of the menu for me was a bit on the spicy side so opted for the vegetarian dish of Cuban black bean and rice with fried plantain and sweet potatoes. I have to say it was very different but quite palatable. It was lovely décor and the staff could not be any more helpful, they were very accommodating and polite. I'm not sure I would venture back here as I felt there was nothing else on the menu I would really try, I think it would be nice to swing by for some drinks as they have a fully stocked bar and I'm sure there's a rum lurking in there somewhere that I may like. We weren't sure where to sit or the set up of the place but after finding a seat the staff were welcoming and helpful. We were in for food more than drinks, however I did have a tasty dark rum and ginger beer or two which was as nice as you'd hope. The service was quick and after ordering the waitress brought over a bottle of their house chilli sauce with a warning that it was incredibly hot - she wasn't lying! It was lovely though, not sure if they do, but they should sell it by the bottle. The menu was small which I find a welcome sign, I always hope this means the kitchen have perfected the few dishes they list and I was not disappointed. To start we had Accra and Popcorn Prawns, the prawns were nice and came with a tasty sauce but the Accra was the definite winner for the starter. For our mains we had Jerk Pit Fish of the Day and Jerk Pit Pork belly, both came with corn on the cob and rice and peas. The jerk seasoning was great, and had a good heat to it, as you would expect. The rice was well cooked and well seasoned and the fish tender and flakey. I could have done with an extra corn on the cob - that dipped in their hot sauce was a highlight for the veggie lover in me. Not eating meat personally, I never tried the pork belly, however I was told it was delicious. It's not far from a top rating for me (I'd give it 4 and a half if I could), the only downfalls I found were the atmosphere little a lacking, probably down to the time of day we visited, between lunch and dinner. I think it would be a great evening trip. I found the material of the plates a little distracting, it felt a little like eating off of paper plates. Over all I'd recommend it, I'll definitely be back to eat here again!

The night itself wasn't organised by the bar but someone outwith who hosts a regular music showcase. The evening felt very uorganised, and although, little of this is down to Sweeney's, the staff were of little help. We arrived early. The decor is eclectic, the pub definitely has a personal touch. I really liked the musical and instrument motifs by the stage area. There's also some quirky signs by the bar. Although, it did all a bit funky and mismatched to me. When we walked in, instruments in hand, we made our way from one half of the bar to the other; one which has the stage. Although the bar staff in the first room had explained we'd to head through to the second, nobody welcomed us or explained what would be happening when we got there. Other than a heckle from some folks at a table and a 'What will you be playing for us?!', we were left to it. We took a seat and, noticing no other instrument-in-hand folks, wandered exactly what the plan was. So we ordered drinks, and then I introduced myself and the band. At this point, more musicians were in the bar. Phew! The barman explained that the person who runs the night was running late. Understandably not their fault, what could they do? But then time went on and on. And there was no update from the bar. We just waited and waited. We'd presumed we were first since it had been listed that way without a mention of running times but after waiting till after the night should have begun (when the organiser finally arrived), we found out we were second. By this point, we just wanted to play; play and go home. In addition, the monitor mix wasn't great and the organiser had mistakenly thought there was two of us, so Sweeney's only paid two of us for performing. The general feeling was that there's venues out there doing amazing things for local music. The best and memorable gigs for us have had great hosts behind them. We just didn't feel this way about Sweeney's, and that's a pity.

We were in during the day so weren't on the booze, but I noted that it did have a fairly big cocktail list which isn't a standard in the Queen's Park area, and I can have no complaints about the quality or price of the soup and sandwich we had. It all feels a bit sterile though, and if The Church on the Hill wants my coveted 5 star award, they will need to sort out the non-existent atmosphere.

This might be a little ambitious, as most of the customers come in for a quick drink, and the diners are scattered around the large space- hence the lack of atmosphere noted in the other reviews. However, I rather like the anonymity it offers. I meet here if I want to actually have a conversation with somebody.

The truth is that it is yet another slightly soulless member of the G1 franchise. The drinks are ridiculously expensive (especially the beer I believe) and the clientele (especially at the weekend) are proud members of the white shirted brigade - men with ludicrously gelled back hair, overwhelming aftershave and a liking for labels who think that standing at the bar holding a £20 note will get them served quicker. It is popular for a reason though. It is one of the few pubs in the south side that opens past 12 during the week. Plus, its conservatory and beer garden means that it is as good a place as any to enjoy a leisurely afternoon in the sun. However, I would stay away at the weekend as it becomes cramped and uncomfortable. There are better things to do of an evening than stand in a corner shouting over rubbish music, whilst your friend queues for half an hour for a £4 drink.

We ordered food, at the same time as drinks, from the menu imaginatively clipped to pieces of old wine crate - nice touch except that A4 is larger than the board so the menus were tatty round the edge (again, not a deal breaker but symptomatic of worse problems to come!). The propaganda at the beginning described something about the proprietor's love of food (he obviously doesn't eat here very often). Like so many others I went for the 'Famous Sunday Roast' which was shocking. The roast pork loin was ok - not over cooked - but the 'seasonal veg' were non existent. I had peas and carrots which had painfully obviously been frozen (rubbery carrots - eugh). Carrots might be seasonal but peas - not in January. What about some Kale or cabbage? The potatoes weren't great, but by this time we were so exhausted by the waiting for everything that we couldn't be bothered to send it back. We just wanted to leave. As a final salute to terrible restaurants, as she neared the bottom of her green salad, my friend found a hair mixed in with the leaves. On drawing this to the waitress' attention, she wasn't greeted with an outpouring of apology but an indifferent grunt. No 'comped' salad for us then. We finally fished out the loose change (remember no card machine) to make the bill exactly (no a snowball's chance in hell of a tip) and left. For £7.95 I don't expect caviar served by my own personal butler but I don't expect the horrific experience that I endured.

The biggest thing that made it bad was that it was freezing, I had to wear my scarf and my hand and face were cold. My husband who usually doesn't complain was not happy at how cold it was sitting having dinner. It was clear we looked cold but no one even asked us. When we left which was quicker than normal we noticed a second section, at the opposite side of the front door which had a log fire. People having dinner in the warmest part of the restaurant. Not a good start or end!! I have recommended this place to so many people after our first visit but I am not that impressed anymore.

Mulberry Street is a bar/restaurant that's doggie friendly, sells up to three real ales (usually Harviestoun and Fyne Ales), serves food and has a pretty big outdoor seating area. The beers are always well kept and this is shown by the yearly entries in the Good Beer Guide that Mulberry Street enjoys. The food is really good and not that expensive too, with Sunday brunch being the highlight with all dishes being served with a pot of tea or speciality coffee. They also have a quiz on Monday nights which is free to enter. The staff are really friendly and efficient too. It tends to get pretty busy on a weekend and in the evenings, and if it's a sunny day you'll need to turn up early to get a prime seat at one of the bistro style outdoor tables to watch Strathbungo life go by! Other establishments in the area may be more hyped, but they can't beat Mulberry Street's dedication over the years to this once obscure area of the Southside.

There's a separate area for the restaurant which was very quiet compared to the bar area but maybe that was because it was mid afternoon. Toilets are downstairs although when we'd visited, the power had gone out so the waitress directed me to the disabled instead. Staff at the bar were really friendly and chatty and I was impressed with the range of drinks. I opted for Strongbow on tap, and there was also West beers available. A round of 4 drinks was just over £10 so not too pricey either. Only downside was that they don't do cocktails but it is a pretty small bar so I guess they can't do everything! I'd definitely head back to check out the food after this visit.
