I had been planning to sleep off the office Christmas do until maybe one o'clock, but my hangover was having none of it and insisted we go out for breakfast, right now, this minute, none of this sleeping nonsense for you. I'm really glad I had that kind of hangover today because it got me a truly excellent breakfast at Bungo. Good work, hangover! That poached egg was perfection, the black pudding was really good (sorry, hung over, can't do complicated adjectives), and if those aren't home made baked beans then they've found a top class artisan baked bean supplier. Also the waitress was lovely, and only mocked me gently. One thing though, I may need to recalibrate my bloody Mary spiciness scale: if that was a 7 I should probably have asked for a four. Still properly tasty though.

Super food again.... Brunch on Saturday. I really like the bungo, staff are always good, fast service and really friendly. Great decorations with the Halloween pumpkins . Good positive buzz and fibe around the place

Sometimes review updates are in happy circumstances, but in this case, it isn't. I just can't stand by my 5 star review for the Bungo anymore so thought it was time for an update. Essentially, this place has slipped a little for me. The food isn't quite so great, the service is a little bit hit-or-miss and generally, they could lift their game. On my most recently visit I ordered from the lunch menu and got a Philly cheesesteak. Now I've only discovered this item recently (at Roast) and was pretty excited about. Sadly, the execution wasn't great. The biggest issue was the steak - lots of wee grisly bits in there which makes eating a ciabatta super unpleasant, having to pick those bits out. I also thought they were a little stingy on the steak and peppers inside it, although there was loads of cheese. On a previous visit we went for brunch and I left really disappointed. It was hard to get served - so much so we ended up going somewhere else for cocktails when we'd planned to stay here. They just didn't seem to want to bring us anything else once we'd finished eating. As I said, I feel like this place has slipped a little and I really hope it picks back up. For now though, it's not really worthy of 5 stars.

My new south side favourite bar eatery. The Bungo Bar & Kitchen offers relaxed vegetarian and vegan friendly dining plus meat and fish options, great drink selection, friendly staff and a warm welcome for dogs. Everyone in our group loved their meal. Kudos for bringing a jug of water to the table too. Would recommend the the jumbo onion rings - they're delicious! if you're after vegan options ask them for the special vegan menu.

I visited The Bungo with my partner for breakfast. We had a very good time and our meals were lovely. We seemed to just miss the rush as it got very busy around 1pm but we had a good table. The staff were very friendly and attentive. I loved the veggie breakfast I got and it was very filling. My only gripe was that I saw on the chalkboard there was an offer for a breakfast and a bloody mary. I ordered my drink first and then my breakfast when the waitress came over. However, when my bill arrived the items were billed separately. When we queried this I was told that because I had ordered my drink first then my meal I wasn't eligible for the deal as I'd been given a larger measure in my drink. The waitress did ask me if this was ok, but since I'd drank my drink I felt that I couldn't really say anything else but yes! It wasn't specified anywhere on the board or menu that this was the case and I wasn't asked by the waitress when ordering if this was my intention. Since it's the norm to order drinks first before a meal I feel that this offer may catch a lot of people out and this should perhaps be made clearer to customers as the Bloody Mary is a tad on the expensive side at £6.50 when not included in an offer and I probably would have just ordered a soft drink.

Popped in here late afternoon for lunch with my wife. Atmosphere very relaxed, staff very welcoming, we ordered the Bungo all day breakfast and we weren't disappointed, everything's delicious but special mention has to go to the beans in what I can only describe as a heavenly house sauce and the stunning meaty sausages. The manager was very chatty and gave us a run down on the history of the place. Was a wee hold up with food (we didn't notice) but for the inconvenience the manager gave us free drinks so win win. Will definitely be back.

When we were there, they seemed to be only doing a brunch menu which was a shame as I actually didn't feel like brunch but I went with the veggie breakfast (no beans) all the same. The brunch menu is pretty standard - full breakfast, veggie option, pancake stack or eggs florentine/benedict. They have gluten free options as well which was good to see. Food didn't take long to arrive and the veggie breakfast was good - nothing ground breaking, but a good selection for £8.95. Most interesting was the falafel which was really nice. The menu said there was a rosti but I didn't seem to get that which I only just realised writing this review! All up, I was really pleased with this brunch spot in terms of the dog-friendliness and how relaxing it was for us. We'll definitely be back.

We opted for the burgers, it is after all what Lebowski's are famous for, they're not particularly cheap and you pay for extra toppings, but they come with a choice of skinny fries or tats (sic). They were very friendly, I even got a tour, and were very generous to our party. The service in general was good too. I really liked my burger even though I'd only elected to have a smoked Applewood cheese slice on it augmented by ketchup from the table. The bun stayed together, the juicy burger stayed together, and the meat was of good quality and nicely seasoned. What more can you ask for from a patty? The skinny fries were as good as any too. So why is it not five stars? Well, a couple of other people commented their burger was a little too dry, so taking that into account a four.

Don't be deceived by the name or the pretty font, the Waverly Tea Rooms is sadly not a teahouse…read more To be fair, the Waverley (a bar and restaurant) has a sedate and subdued atmosphere most of the time, but this is usually through circumstance rather than choice. The truth is that it is yet another slightly soulless member of the G1 franchise. The drinks are ridiculously expensive (especially the beer I believe) and the clientele (especially at the weekend) are proud members of the white shirted brigade - men with ludicrously gelled back hair, overwhelming aftershave and a liking for labels who think that standing at the bar holding a £20 note will get them served quicker. It is popular for a reason though. It is one of the few pubs in the south side that opens past 12 during the week. Plus, its conservatory and beer garden means that it is as good a place as any to enjoy a leisurely afternoon in the sun. However, I would stay away at the weekend as it becomes cramped and uncomfortable. There are better things to do of an evening than stand in a corner shouting over rubbish music, whilst your friend queues for half an hour for a £4 drink.

On entry we were informed that the card machine was broken so we would have to pay cash. No problem, technical problems happen. Then we ordered drinks. Nothing complex just cokes, diet cokes, lemonades. These took forever to arrive and when we enquired with the absent waitress (we had to go into the bar) she wasn't in the least bit apologetic as she barked that they were coming. We ordered food, at the same time as drinks, from the menu imaginatively clipped to pieces of old wine crate - nice touch except that A4 is larger than the board so the menus were tatty round the edge (again, not a deal breaker but symptomatic of worse problems to come!). The propaganda at the beginning described something about the proprietor's love of food (he obviously doesn't eat here very often). Like so many others I went for the 'Famous Sunday Roast' which was shocking. The roast pork loin was ok - not over cooked - but the 'seasonal veg' were non existent. I had peas and carrots which had painfully obviously been frozen (rubbery carrots - eugh). Carrots might be seasonal but peas - not in January. What about some Kale or cabbage? The potatoes weren't great, but by this time we were so exhausted by the waiting for everything that we couldn't be bothered to send it back. We just wanted to leave. As a final salute to terrible restaurants, as she neared the bottom of her green salad, my friend found a hair mixed in with the leaves. On drawing this to the waitress' attention, she wasn't greeted with an outpouring of apology but an indifferent grunt. No 'comped' salad for us then. We finally fished out the loose change (remember no card machine) to make the bill exactly (no a snowball's chance in hell of a tip) and left. For £7.95 I don't expect caviar served by my own personal butler but I don't expect the horrific experience that I endured.
