So I popped in here the other day with the Angela of B for a pre pub quiz pizza nosh and was once again, not disappointed! When this place first opened up I fired into grab some pizza on the recommendation of Mr Rocco of the G.... 'it's good!' said he. 'aye?' said I. 'aye!' said he. 'aye, aye' said I. 'aye, aye, arrrrrrh me hearties, pieces of eight and a pirates life for me' said... no-one. So on that recommendation a few of us popped in for the pizza and were pretty impressed. The only downpoint at the time was the beer selection, which appears to have been rectified somewhat now with a couple of Samuel Smith additions (decently priced too boot!). On the pizza front, although the 2-4-1 deal has gone the way of the dodo, it's still of a very high standard and well worth munching. So yeah, despite it still fighting an uphill battle with some of it's more well established neighbours, this place does decent beer, great pizzas and a darn fine soundtrack to the evening. I like! Popped in for food yesterday afternoon as the advert of "New Orleans street food", albeit not being served on the street, caught our eye. Suffice to say the bar prices haven't levelled off since my earlier write-up (ordering Beavertown probably wasn't the wisest move of course). Service was fine and my girlfriend demolished her po boy with gusto. I was less convinced by the gumbo I ordered - rather too much rice bulking it out and not enough liquid (it was more like curry than gumbo) so at £9 it was probably at least a pound overpriced. read more

So, Broadcast has been open a wee while now, they've had time to settle and I've made several visits so a wee update is on the cards. It gaining a good reputation and rightly so and it seems to be getting busier now. Firstly, Broadcast have expanded their menu and they now serve non pizza type food. Burgers and salads have been consumed and a big thumbs up awarded! Pizza is also becoming more and more delicious as the pizza man settles into his role. Unfortunately the 2-4-1 deal is now limited but they are still very reasonably priced. On top of that they have an excellent selection of Williams Bros. bottled beers. Defo some of the best food you will eat on Sauchiehall Street! My only complaint is that when there is a live band on downstairs it completely dominates noise levels in the bar upstairs. Therefore what can be a pleasant and chilled out room can turn into a music battle, as staff crank up the stereo in the bar to mask the noise from below. It can sound pretty terrible at times. So no movement in the star rating, but its a solid 4, I'm a fan! read more

Broadcast was hitting the high 4 stars for me on my first visit on Saturday night - a seriously cool space upstairs, lots of seats, good bar selections. I really liked it and was super keen to return to try out the food to write up a full review. But then we headed downstairs for the gig space. The stairs are by the door and you head down a winding staircase. The basement gig room is very reminiscent of the Captain's Rest which I initially loved. There was seating along the sides of the room and a bar up the back. That was until I turned to the front of the room. Well, what I assumed to the front of the room - I had no idea because I couldn't actually see the stage. A little bit of stretching and peering lead me to realise the stage isn't that high off the ground, and with the roof being so low there is perhaps one foot of space for you to see the band. I thought things might improve when the support band started. Putting aside my musical differences, all I could see of the band was their hair on some occasions - a lot of the time all I could see was the back of heads. Now I know what it must be like to be a shorter person going to gigs. I'm not actually short so it was a weird experience for me. Added to this was the fact that the headlining band (Future of the Left) attracts mostly a male crowd, and for some reason they were mostly tall males. At one point I actually thought there was a brown bear standing in front of us, dressed in a check shirt with matching beard swigging from a can of Red Stripe. It was only the fact that his face wasn't totally covered in hair that gave him away as being human. He was bloody tall though, and so we moved further to the back. Before this point we'd been standing in the middle of the room. Obviously things didn't really improve at the back and there was a lot of grumpy people grizzling around us (not the bear guy, we left him at the middle). When Future of the Left came on I managed to nab a seat to stand on right in front of the sound guy at the back. While then I could see Falco's face (and what a beautiful face it is), it still wasn't much of a "seeing a band experience" - more of a "happening to be in the same room as a band". We stayed for about 45 minutes and then gave up and left. Seems that lots of people decided to do the same as someone standing near the entrance remarked the gig must be over. No, it wasn't, my patience was though. Logistically I'm not sure what Broadcast could do to improve the space as it's obviously limited by the height of the roof etc. But I wouldn't return here to see a band in the future as it really killed the experience for me after seeing FOTL 5 times before. I would definitely go back upstairs though - that space gets itself 4 stars. Downstairs is lucky to get 2 stars so that's how I arrived at an average of 3. read more

£3 for a large, creamy White Russian? On that basis, I'm an instant fan of Broadcast. For this first-time visit, we were there to see Sean Wheeler & Zander Schloss. The ticket, which we foolishly believed, said that it was a 7pm start. This really means: get there at 7, drink till 8, live music. Not a problem when the £3 White Russians are a-flowing. My first thoughts were positive ones based on the friendly staff, nice little selection of beers and cocktails on the cheap. It's cash only but that isn't worth complaining about, since there's a cash machine just seconds away outside. The basement below is small by music venue standards, but didn't feel all too cramped. - The ceiling is low which makes it feel all the smaller but it's quite a wide space for the crowd. I was really impressed with the sound; no glaring feedback and a really good mix. Not too mention, a fast, seamless changeover between bands. A neat little bar and basement, based on White Russian-fuelled first impressions. read more

If you know the legend of the Captains Rest, then you'll know about this place and you'll know that it's main purpose is live music. This review, however, is based solely on the bar upstairs. On the particular Thursday I was there, Broken Records were downstairs but I didn't venture down, pity. Immediately upon entering you are met with a very open, spacious, comfortable and dark, but certainly not depressing area. I like this. I also quite like the bare stone walls and wrought iron fittings. There then follows a bit of a let down by the beers on draught, Krony and Heini are the best on offer here, in an age where most drinking establishments are looking to offer something more palatable. The untrained eye might stop here, but one look into the fridges below and you are met with bottles of fizzy ambers from the Williams Bros. It's unusual for me to be in a bar where there isn't either WB, West, Brooklyn or ale on tap (this is definitely not an ale bar) therefore, I missed the bottles of goodness on my first visit to the bar. As previous reviewers have mentioned, and subsequent reviewers will also mention if they know what's good for them, the pizzas are superb. In fact they're better than superb, they're...um...really superb, and 2 for 1 to boot. So, let's do a star tally. +1 spacious, +1 comfortable, +1pizzas, -1 draught beers, +1 bottled beers, +1 supporter of live music. =4 stars right? Plus one potential star when I see a band downstairs, which would make it 5 stars right? But that's not right, 'cos a 5 star establishment is one I would want to come back to time and time again. The reason I don't particularly want to do that is unfortunately location. I hate this part of SausageRoll Street and do my most to avoid it. So I need to take one away for that. 3 with a potential for 4. I don't mind saying, that if I'm blown away by the live venue, I'll bump it to 5 since location is hard to fix. read more

I'm tempted to add an extra star but I'm going to wait until I've been to another gig or tried the food. However, I was quietly impressed by Broadcast on my first visit. Admittedly, the time on our gig ticket bore no resemblance to the time the gig actually started but the street level bar is a very comfy space and the beer isn't too expensive so we were happy to sit and have a couple of drinks while we waited. It's actually a bar that I would choose to go to for a drink and definitely if we were waiting for the doors to open at The Garage across the road, I'd be very tempted to sit in here with a pint while watching for the queue to start moving. The gig space downstairs is tiny and the stage isn't so much a stage as a step, but we don't like popular bands so there wasn't a big crowd and we managed to get to the front and had a great view. The sound seemed fine, although it does feel a bit strange being pretty much on eye level with the band you're watching. There's a small bar downstairs and a tiny area up the back for merch - it's nothing fancy but for smaller bands with smaller audiences it's a decent space. The food menu looked good - simple bar food, nothing fancy, just what Him Indoors likes. i noticed that the pizzas have been getting good reviews so I think the next time we're going here or The Garage for a gig, we might make an evening of it and grab some food here first. I have visited Broadcast 3 times for food and eaten in broadcast 0 times. I have heard tell of wondrous 2-4-1 pizza but have been unable to sample these delights after being told "we stop serving at 9" at 9:06, "we stop serving at 9" at 9:01, and "we sent the chef home as he was unwell" at 8:42. Hmmm. Subtext: It was quiet so we sent him home. Nil points!!! (or 1 star as that is the minimum here). It also seems like an unlikely place to enjoy eating because the entire building always vibrates from the gigs downstairs. I loved this place! I mean loved this place so much that I'd bring a friend at least twice a week for 2 for 1 burgers and get fries to share and a pint and I left feeling satisfied, impressed, licking my chops for the kind of burger that was so flavourful, so juicy, perfectly cooked and seasoned.... What happened here? You used to be a contender in burger aristocracy!!!! What is this? Bring back the good chef please. Hand cut fries should not be potato wedges, the burger shouldn't be 1/4 size of the bun. So sad Other than that this place is amazing, love the line ups, the drinks and the good vibes read more

I found myself in here through no choice of my own after a gig in the SECC on Friday night (three guesses who...) so I was really on a high and I just needed a drink after refusing to pay the hugely inflated prices at the SECC. My friend and I were meeting someone and he was already in here. The interior is lacking in something. It's dark and dingy, but it's good for groups. The background music was terrible-especially for somewhere that is supposed to be a live music venue. It sounded like a twelve year old had put their Spotify on shuffle. I'd really like to like this place, really I would-but I can't. The bar staff are lovely. Really they are. They're just incredibly incompetent. It took them around twenty minutes just to get a White Russian and a shot of Sambuca despite the fact it wasn't even particularly busy on a Friday night. I suspect I will be back at some point though. I like giving places second chances. Needless to say, we all left promptly to go to Sleazy's next door where a brilliant night was had by all! read more

The first time I visited Broadcast, I was on a stag do; it was dark, late and fairly hazy. So last night, I got to experience the place with a clearer head and sample some food too. My mate and I were in for a gig (Frankie Lee and Joe Pug - both awesome) but arrived sharp for beer and a burger. We both had the bacon cheeseburgers and fries; mine accompanied by a bottle of Blue Moon. The place was cool, relaxed, chilled out on a cold Wednesday night with various folks enjoying drinks or fiddling on MacBooks (would anyone dare be seen with a regular laptop?). I liked the vibe of the artwork round the room and the gig posters and the service was friendly and quick. The food itself was no better or worse than any other bar/cafe in the city but definitely leaned to the positive side of the fence. The burger was tasty and the bacon was a good quality. The chips were also nice and crispy but fluffy inside - ideal. The actual gig venue beneath the bar is teeny and was especially teeny with a healthy crowd in to see the acts but no problem at all getting served at the bar. Seriously, small gigs are just way better. Frankie Lee even had a chat and signed my CD, which I know has nothing to do with Broadcast but you know, cool story bro. The acoustics of the room are spot on for small acoustic acts too if that sort of thing bothers you. So yeah, good place for a beer, a natter and a great undiscovered live music. Always a warm reception. Been here both during the day and in the evening but yet to sample a gig downstairs - small venue which looks like it would be great for intimate gigs. It has a relaxed atmosphere during the day which makes it so much better if you're a woman on her own. read more

This joint is the 'new' home to the Captains Rest, one of the most exciting West End live venues. It will be missed. Broadcast clearly aims to bring the look and feel of the West End to the City Centre, where the bar prices and promos are however, much more accomodating. Hit the first quiz here which was great, but the seating arrangements are not made for quizzing really. Not enough of them, essentially. Live venue downstairs (extremely loud) which will do well to rival Sleazies a few doors down. Good bar choices and clean (but extremely small) toilets. Will definitely go back for quiz action, a good alternative to the many others on Tuesdays. Not sure it will quite live up to the status of Captains Rest, but its location near Charing Cross is not that far enough away from the old spot that it should inspire visits from both old customers and new. I've been here twice so far; I deliberated between 4 and 5 after an initial visit but happy to go towards the 5 after a pleasant second visit. I visited initially as I'd come across their online menu featuring a 'vegan' labelled falafel pizza. I've rarely had falafel pizza and anyone used to reading my reviews will know I get very excited when I see anything actually clearly marked as being suitable for vegans on a menu. On arrival I noticed their menu had changed - no marked vegan pizza anymore but they did have two veggie burgers: tofu, and falafel. The tofu burger (burger only, no accompanying chips) was priced at £11! What?! However, it's always 2 for 1 on the burgers, and the 'going solo' burger is £7. So it doesn't seem like it's ever £11. Unless you only get the solo price if actually dining alone? Agh! If I was in London and they made their own tofu then maybe (MAYBE!) I could justify this price. I don't know for sure they don't make their own tofu but I feel confident on an educated guess. Anyway, the burger also comes with a vegan bun (i.e., a bun that isn't brioche) and it was alright. I'd have preferred a more firm patty rather than the soft chunks that fell out of the bun; if I was in again and felt like a burger I'd try the falafel one for a change. Also had a bottle of Innis & Gunn rum finish beer, for the first time. I now love this stuff and it's so hard to find! It got a bit thumpy underfoot with music, I guessed there was a band rehearsing somewhere in the venue. The sweet potato fries were nice. Not up there as my favourite in the city, but worth ordering. I asked for a swap of the non-vegan sauce. Staff were attentive and service was quite quick. On leaving I noticed the board outside that mentioned the soya milk white russians - I noted this for next time! The toilets were so-so, clean but the hot taps didn't work. I think I preferred the female toilets to the disabled one; if I remember correctly the hand dryer was better. On the second visit this week we had the fries again, Right on Russians (the vegan one, though they can veganise other russians drinks on the menu) and split a pizza. We ordered a vegetarian pizza with cheese removed and added falafel instead. The pizza was delicious; I really loved the soft base and its thickness. (I'm not much of a fan of thin and crispy ones.) Service was great, drinks were good, hot taps still weren't letting out any water, music was good. read more

Ventured into Broadcast for the first time today for a couple of drinks (aka any warmth I could possibly find to stop my body becoming a polar ice cap) with Colin. Yes, it was about -230 degrees today and yes, Colin and I did walk all the way from Roast in Finnieston to Sauchiehall Street, so we decided we deserved some good warmth and cocktails. Was warmth had? No, it was absolutely freezing cold because there was a band setting up downstairs for what I assume is a gig tonight, and so they kept coming in and out of the door therefore chilling my bones to the point of no return. The cocktails had were good, but quite small considering their price, and I think I'll come back in here for pizza at one point because the pizza menu looks decent, but the place was completely void of any atmosphere (maybe cause we were the only ones there, maybe because the bar staff seemed ridiculously bored) and for a first experience, I'm not entirely drawn towards making a return. I shall though, as pizza calls my name and I've heard good things about the food. Hopefully the atmosphere/staff improve next time, because I do like the feel of the place, and anywhere with a huge disco ball on the ceiling is a place I would like to frequent. I used to love the food at Broadcast. First time I popped in, I had zero expectations before being presented with this great menu. The choice of burgers and pizzas covered all tastes, and I could probably rave on about the Chicken Tikka Kabobs for a good ten minutes. But, I popped in a few weeks back to find it has all changed. The menu is now much more restrictive, and they have removed many of my favourite burger options (No more halloumi burger - WTF?) To give credit, the burgers were still tasty and the sweet potato fries were as good as ever, but where was the choice. They do have an extensive list of extras, but this is gonna add £2-3 to the cost of your food. They do have good burger and a beer deals, but what was once a mainstay is now down the pecking order. read more

As with all of these things, you need a backstory: you, the hardy adventurer, have survived the corridor of despair that is Sauchiehall Street on a Saturday and you've made your way to Broadcast. Do you A) go in for a drink; or B) go and see a gig? Only you, my fair explorer, can decide... A - Have a drink You have chosen reasonably well. You have entered a tavern which will entertain you for an evening but which won't fill you with revelatory zeal. The barkeeps, who may be fringe members of the cult of hipster you have avoided on your travels, will serve you a good selection of Samuel Smith libations, you can sit in a well decorated bar area and watch the world go by. You haven't picked the best bar in its class (and it doesn't help that one of the best is next door) but you have done pretty well. Add 1.5 stars to your life points above. B) Go to See a Gig You have descended into hell and have lost all of your life points. In all of your travels, this might be one of the worst gig venues you have ever been to. Crippled by the fact it's so low, there isn't a stage, so unless you are in the front row or two all you can see is the backs of other adventurers heads. In essence, all you are doing is facing towards a very loud soundsystem and hoping to see the top of the lute players head - forget it if you like watching drummers at work. The libation station is a bit ramshackle, and the whole thing feels like a venue has been shoehorned into a space rather than a space found for a good venue. This adventurer has been in many small venues in his travels, and many of them can work as a gig space despite their small size, and again an example of this is next door! In all honesty, unless your favourite band plays here I'd avoid like the plague you ran away from on page 47. The choice is yours, dear adventurer - make it wisely... read more

For some reason l don't like this place. They have such s relaxed policy of opening and serving times l don't know why they bother opening. The staff here I find unfriendly and in your face, if you are looking for a night out anywhere else but here would be a better option. If there was a zero rating this place would have one. read more

After one visit, I like Broadcast well enough. The staff are friendly and there was a nice vibe in the upstairs bar when I visited. I also attended a cracking gig downstairs, and I liked that I was allowed to take my glass bottle with me rather than decant my beer into one of those unmanageable plastic tumblers (though those also seemed to be in evidence when I got downstairs - I suspect glass is allowed depending on the business of gigs). However, I'd say there's still room for improvement. The choice of beers on tap is pretty minimal (and four of the taps were off when we were there). There is a range of bottles in the fridge, but as a short person, I'm a bit fed up of having to crane and squint over the bar to try and identify nice beers. The bar is pretty dark, and as other reviews have mentioned, I can easily imagine that the noise from downstairs gigs must be a bit grim to endure in the bar. However, the thing that really confuses me is their burger pricing system. Currently Broadcast are offering 2-4-1 burgers all week. Which sounds like a great deal, but at between £9 - £11 per burger with NO accompaniments included (no fries, no salad, no cutlery) it's really only worth it if you're with a chum who also likes burgers - or are willing to eat two. The chicken burger (aka the 'Cock-A-Doodle-Do') was very nice, in fairness, but if I'd been dining solo, I'd have felt very short changed indeed to have spent £8.95 for just a burger on a side plate with a steak knife stuck in it. Plus, Broadcast are also one of those places who put your napkin on the plate and then your food on the napkin (a breach of etiquette surely akin to offering someone a used hanky). Skinny fries are included along with the similarly priced wraps, but I'm just not convinced that the production cost or the size of the burgers justifies the exclusion of fries - especially when Nice n' Sleazy's famous burgers (WITH accompaniments) are practically next door! So yeah - I like the place enough for a return visit. But I'll probably eat somewhere else first. read more

This place was great. It manages to have a good atmosphere and retain that feeling of being a bit different despite the fact its on this part of sauchiehall street! Only complaint is the beer choices. Had that Williams Brothers beer which is just horrible. Go for the music not the beer! read more

Some of the advertised beers were unavailable, the menu choice is narrow, the service was pretty slow (despite is being a quiet Wednesday), the nachos were just Doritos with topping. The food was reasonable but I'm sure it used to be better than this. Half-arsed. read more

The place is nice and it plays good music but a few of the bar staffs attitudes are stinking. They where quite aggressive when speaking to them, they obviously so like working there. read more
