If I could post ZERO stars for these guys, I would have. They don't have a clue what they are doing and have no problem ripping you off. I absolutely wasted a bunch of time and a whole lot of money using these bozos and in the end I HAD TO FIX THE HVAC ISSUE MYSELF!
Details below - read if you want, but in summary I wouldn't call these guys again for ANY reason. They are terrible.
We called Britech because our blower fan was cycling on and off when on A/C and not blowing hard enough to cool the house properly.
First off, they didn't show up for several days, cancelling the first appointment at the last minute that we had stayed home from work to be there for.
When they finally got there, their guy said he was there to do our "maintenance ". I told him we don't want any maintenance, we want the blower motor to stop cycling.
He said it would be $199 to ASSESS the furnace and A/C unit. Since we aren't HVAC people, we agreed to the work and signed off on them doing it, as it was going to be 34° C the next day. After the "assessment", he said it would be $600-$700 TO FIX THE PROBLEM, and we'd have to schedule another appointment (and more time off work). Again, since we aren't HVAC people, we agreed to the work and signed off on them doing it.
When he came back, I was out of town and my wife (who REALLY knows nothing about HVAC) agreed to whatever work would fix the problem. He did whatever work he said was causing the problem (refrigerant leaks) and said everything was working excellent when he left.
I get home the Saturday of the long weekend and the blower fan was still cycling. Absolutely NOTHING had been done to address the problem we hired them for, the paperwork said NOTHING about inspecting the blower motor OR the thermostat (a NEST learning thermostat) and the problem was still there.
It was at this point I realized I made a huge mistake hiring these people and I had been ripped off.
So, I took the blower motor out myself (IT TOOK 12 MINUTES) and had it checked by a motor company. They said it was toast - the bushings were worn out, the motor was working at about 40% of what it should have been and the capacitors were shot. Another $250 for a new motor. I put it back in and the force of air coming out of my registers was better. BUT, the new fan was also cycling.
I googled this issue and discovered that the NEST thermostat sometimes needs a C (common) wire run from the 24V terminal on the furnace to properly power it. So, I ran a C wire to the thermostat (30 minutes) and voila - PROBLEM SOLVED.
So, Britech (the HVAC "experts"), came into our home because the blower fan was cycling on and off, they never TOUCHED or even looked at the blower fan or the thermostat and said they'd fixed the problem which was occurring before AND after they were there. They fixed NOTHING. I had to fix it myself, and I've never been inside a furnace before this incident. In other words, someone with ZERO trading and NO experience fixed a problem that we paid Britech (the HVAC "experts") $950 to fix and they resolved NOTHING towards fixing that problem.
Several phone calls to their GM and Owner to attempt to get some sort of a refund was fruitless. Their position was that we signed off on all their recommended work so "too bad so sad" for us. And that the blower motor was working perfectly fine when they were there (but their Owner did admit his gut didn't look at either the motor or the thermostat).
CONCLUSION: attempt to fix your furnace yourself before calling Britech, as you'll have a better chance of the work being done properly, OR CALL SOMEONE ELSE. Stay clear of these people. read more
