Tonight was a fish & chips night. Found this place near our air bnb. A cozy spot with a few tables, mostly counter service; now that the weather is nicer, there are tables and umbrellas outside on the sidewalk. The clientele is a cross section of the general population of Montreal. Young and old, families and couples. They have waiter service. The fish part of the "fish and chips"was not greasy or soggy. Which can often be the case if the oil is not hot enough. They have their own signature tartar sauce that comes with the meal. There are plenty of chips that come with the fish that are well seasoned and cooked to order. I didn't see any sitting in a stainless steel bin waiting to be delivered to the customer. The kitchen is partially open so you can see in and see what they're doing if that's your preference or if you're curious. As we were leaving,the cook was at one of the counters, eating his own food. That's a good sign!
We went there to have Fish and Chips. We were a little disappointed with the food, it was just OK. I had fried Cod and my partner had haddock with the maple syrup batter. The fish tasted fresh, but the batter wasn't that great, and the fries could have been a little crisper. The restaurant is a small restaurant, and it felt a little cramped and I was glad that there wasn't anyone at the table behind us.
My husband and I had dinner here last night and it was great. We had a small table in the back, where we tried the scotch egg, cod fish and chips, and sole fish and chips in maple batter. I liked the sole best of all. We appreciated our server letting us know we could make our "chips" a poutine instead (otherwise there would have been way too many fries if we'd gotten a poutine appetizer. If you get a combo it comes with a soda or iced tea. Very friendly service. Easy walk from the Saint Sulpice hotel, even in the snow.

I found myself in the area around Square Victoria metro recently and knew that there was a Brit & Chips in the area (but wasn't sure where) on McGill Avenue but since I knew that there was also a Five Guys in the area, I felt that if I didn't find Brit & Chips, I would just go to Five Guys if I found it. I did find both Five Guys and Brit & Chips (they are on opposite sides of the street) on McGill Avenue south of St Jacques. I had eaten at a Brit & Chips location before when they had a restaurant near Guy-Concordia metro (maybe about ~10 years ago) when I worked in a building which was close to the Green line so convenient to go there for lunch since it was less than 10 minutes away from my place of work at the time whereas for me to get to this location from where I worked would have taken about twice as long since it would have meant transferring from the green line to the orange line. On the day that I went to that location back then, I did remember that it wasn't that busy and I was the only customer. Unfortunately, that Brit & Chips restaurant did not survive. I did remember that the fish was very good so decided to go to this Brit & Chips since they had a lunch special. The staff were very friendly and greeted me in French and while I'm bilingual, I answered in English and the server replied to me in English. I was asked whether I was eating in or wanted something take out. I told the person that I was eating in and he told me that I could sit "anywhere" so I picked a seat in the back. I went to the washroom to wash my hands and then returned to my seat. I was asked whether I was ready to order and I mentioned that I was so the person motioned to the server and she asked me what I wanted. I asked her what I could get for their $19 lunch special and she told me that it was any of the 3 fish and chips dishes on the menu. I quickly looked at it and made my choice based on the server's recommendation (cod) and also decided to have a beer. The beer was brought immediately to my table and the food was put on my table a few minutes later (maybe 4 minutes later). The battered fish wasn't as good or prepared as well as I remember from the other location nor was it the best battered fish that I've had. The fries (chips) were good. The dipping sauce was also very good. What I didn't like about the way my battered fish was prepared was that when I cut into it, the hollow or "air pockets" of the fish/batter was dripping with oil. I know that the battered fish is deep fried so some oil is to be expected but I felt that it was "a lot" of oil that came out when I cut into my fish. The restaurant wasn't too busy at the time that I went (it wasn't empty nor was I the only customer there throughout my meal since as people left, others came in). I also didn't feel rushed. I showed up about 15 minutes before 2pm (their lunch special ends at 2pm... which I interpret to mean that the customer needs to enter and order before 2pm). In terms of whether I would return, I'm unsure since I'm rarely if ever at Square Victoria and for the orange line in downtown Montreal, I'm generally either at Place D'Armes or Bonaventure. If I exit Square Victoria metro, I would have no aversion to returning if I felt like fish & chips but would also just be as likely to try a different restaurant in the area. When downtown, I'm generally around the green line area. Yes, I know that in the underground city/tunnels you can get from McGill metro to Square Victoria metro without taking the metro but it is a very long walk indoors (from McGill metro station to Eaton Centre to the tunnel to Place Ville Maria to Central Station to the tunnel at Bonaventure station and a long walk indoors, one winds up in Square Victoria metro and exiting Square Victoria metro and going outside, walking a few blocks, less than 5 minutes or so away is Brit & Chips. Depending on the weather, if one didn't want to take the metro but was at McGill metro, it might be faster to just walk there directly above ground (outdoors) but then again with the traffic lights, it might not save that much time but would save a lot of walking (and perhaps going up a few flights of stairs since some escalators generally don't work). I would rate this place as 3.5 stars which I've rounded up to a 4 since I don't feel right lowering it to a 3.
Yum! Great food, great service. Both indoor counter style seating and a really lovely outdoor patio. I came here for the gluten free fish and chips and the batter did not disappoint. They are very transparent that they don't have a separate fryer for the gf batter. I had the cod and it was great. Really great chip shop, 10 out of 10 recommend!
Nice decor. Festive for the holidays. There were some others there, but not too busy for lunch on a Monday. One cook and one server and they had some downtime in between orders. Menu seems authentic enough, but the food was pretty unremarkable. Not too flavorful.
Food: Amazing and hot as in temperature In my opinion the food was a bit over cooked on the outside but the inside was amazing. The food had so much salt but perhaps that is what is normal for Montreal. Serves fast and very friendly and the services spoke English great. The only problem this is one 1 working the table at time of sitting down. There is 2 cooks. Sitting area they have outside sits and inside They are pert friendly however you have to sit on the outside . You can even ask for a water for your pet.. that was good.
A fun spot worth checking out! We visited Montreal and I always enjoy trying the different varieties of food especially here. The fish and chips were delicious and flavorful! I would add a little salt but that's just me. I enjoyed their tarter sauce and aioli. The aioli I liked more with the fish. The staff was very friendly and we talked for a few minutes on the way out. The only thing I was not a huge fan of was the Indian shrimp. I also like that instead of regular fries you can get poutine. It's an acquired taste but I respect it.
Followed a group of people into this eatery...so glad we did! There's just times when you want some solid fish and chips...nothing fancy, just great! This place fits the bill. It was tough navigating through the narrow, crowded hall to get in, but a friendly server quickly met us. She steered us to the only open table (alas, it was lunch hour)! The menu is one page front and back: the food served from a counter where the waft of fried goodness tickles your appetite. When it gets to your table, it's delivered on trays with checkered paper...mouth-watering and delicious! Add your favorite condiments and you're good to go!
For price, experience, and taste I'd rate this place well! It's pretty small on the inside but the food was great, quick and the service was stellar. I'd definitely visit again. I'm not sure about a large group fitting in this place but it works for a family of 4, 2 or 1.
We loved Brit & Chips! My husband and I love fish and chips and were looking for a place that also has poutine. We both ordered drinks, I had the cider lacroix and my husband had the burgundy lion ale, both were crisp and delicious! We both had the cod and my husband upgraded his fries to poutine for $5 extra. The fish was delicious, batter was flavorful and the fish was super fresh. My husband absolutely LOVED his poutine! His favorite part of the meal. Our bill was around $80 for everything, not bad! We would absolutely come back here.
This has got to be one of the best fish and chips restaurants in the western hemisphere! I have never had true fish and chips, but I'd now bet on this place against any person who says I need to go to England to have true fish and chips. The fish was so crispy on the outside while moist and fluffy on the inside. And the chips were fantastic too. Bonus - first time I have ever seen giant Heinz ketchup packets (I put them to good use, only needed 3 instead of 15 or so of the normal sized ones )!
A true english fish and chips place! The ambiance is very much leaning into the english heritage and I love it. Awesome deals, and the meal we got was plenty of food for 2 hungry people. The fish was tender and the fries were classic British style, a bit more potatoey than crispy, but pairs well with malt vinegar. The tartar sauce was okay to me, but I also am not the biggest fan of tartar sauce so I'm probably not the best judge. They also have mushy peas! Very hard to find a place that offers mushy peas (which I love) so big kudos. If you like fish and chips you deserve to try this and see how the brits do it! Got the sticky toffee pudding, and I wish they put on more sweet sauce, but it was delectable however I could not eat as much as I wanted as I was so full from the fish. Highly recommend! read more

I tried this for lunch today. I was seated in a good size sidewalk covered patio... Other than the fire engine and ambulance that responded to a call about a block past me, not too much street noise... I ordered the traditional fish & chips (3 piece) in cod. The fries, er chips were a generous portion and not too greasy. The fish was also well cooked, but they were a little too greasy... It was served with slaw and mushy peas. I would have liked to add a cup of chowder, but alas, no joy... My server was great, no issues whatsoever. She made some suggestions and inquired about my travel plans and offered some tips on what see and what to avoid... Overall 4.5/5 The Guinness was also bomb!! read more
Fish and chips spot that has mushy peas!! I'm not a huge fan but my boyfriend craves them after going to London one time. Everything came out hot and fresh. I actually liked the coleslaw which is not usually my thing. Service was super friendly and fast and convinced us to get the sticky toffee pudding which was yummy, though I wish it came with ice cream instead of having to pay extra to add it. read more

Brit & Chips earned a well deserved five stars from me, not because they have the most extensive menu or best ambience, but that they excel at their speciality as a fish and chips restaurant. I've visited many chip shops in the UK, where my only criteria was choosing ones that claim to serve the best fish and chips in the world. I was so impressed with Brit & Chips that I purchased one of their t-shirts, my first souvenir 3 days into my visit in Montreal. The cod was lightly breaded and perfectly cooked. The tartar sauce was excellent. You can tell by the picture that it is not the usual mayonnaise with a minimum amount of pickles, dill, etc added. This is all the great ingredients with the minimum amount of mayonnaise. I did not try the chips based on a prior review, not because they were not rated high, but that two pieces of cod would be enough for lunch. Finally, the staff could not have been more hospitable. The owner has done a great job recruiting and taking care of his staff. I can tell because they genuinely appeared happy to be there with each other. They were so nice to me and the customers around me. read more

Delicious is the only way to describe this place! We came after the lunch rush and ordered the haddock and a side of poutine. We still talk about how good the haddock was. They use maple syrup in their batter to give it and appropriately sweeter taste. The poutine were tasty too! Definitely worth a visit! read more

I loved the different choices of fish and batters. The maple batter was so light and just a tad sweet. Overall the fish, fries and coleslaw were delicious, however the price is pretty high considering the sides aren't even included. The place is small and rustic. Quick and friendly service. read more

My fish-and- chips-loving- husband wanted lunch here and it was a great choice!! The fish was fresh and delicious and I was sooo pleased to find spicy Mayo for my chips. We also shared a poutine which was much better than some of the "famous" poutine spots in Montreal! Portion was generous and we left full. Indoor and outdoor seating. Cute little British vibe inside as well. I'd definitely recommend! read more

It was okay. They served a large portion for the fish, but I didn't feel like there was any seasoning at all. It was pretty expensive in my opinion, which was the biggest downer since it was just fish and chips. The ambiance was quaint and cozy, but we chose to have our order to go. Nothing special to say about the service, because we were in and out. I wish I had more to say, but nothing really stood out about this experience. read more

Had the cod & haddock, both ok. The fries are ok, could be better/crispier & less dark. The apple fritters/beignets are good. The big portions are nice. Cramped space for party of 7 but was ok. Bathroom in back. read more
Such a great place and they were open on Christmas EVE. LARGE fish portions. I was going to order an extra fish to add to the two but I'm glad I didn't. We were so full. Fish was excellent. When in Montreal, I'm going back. read more

You haven't been to Great Britain if you haven't had their Fish & Chips (" C'est un incontournable"). Many fish & chips shops offer their traditional dish served in newspapers, as I recall. My craving took me to Brit & Chips which captures that traditional dish. I ordered, for take out, one of the popular fish on the menu, Cod in a Burgundy Lion Ale Batter. If you are not calorie counting, then you would also indulge in their fries. I stopped short of my temptation to order the fries, even at just an additional $2. This would have otherwise put me to sleep, let alone feeling guilty afterwards. The beer battered fish is indeed epic, fried to perfection, with the right amount of flavour, perhaps lacking saltiness for some, but just right for me. Crunchy batter and juicy fish - It feels like eating high end, while still enjoying the greasy delights of fried battered fish. Good thing that I did not order fries, as the fish portion was large enough for my lunch. It comes with a generous piece of lemon and a tartare/mayo sauce. Once the calories wear off and cravings come back, I will perhaps go for the "chips". read more

Spotted Brit & Chips one day while walking around the city and decided on our last night to give it a try. They have a few tables outside where we ate. Service was both prompt and friendly. We had the cod fish n chips which was delicious and this is coming from a girl who lives on the coast in RI! My only complaint was the coleslaw. Not a fan. Highly recommend if you are in the area. read more
