I chose Visiting Angels over Senior Corp because Angels was so much better about staying in touch. I live 430 miles away from my mother, and I needed help that was going to communicate with me in a timely manner. Visiting Angels gets high marks for communication. As it turned out, by the time we got the scheduling worked out, mom was feeling much stronger and did not want the service. Dean Longo at the Norfolk office was incredibly understanding about the change in plans, and just wonderfully professional to work with. I have Visiting Angels in my back pocket and will not hesitate to call them again.

We had a mixed experience. Visiting Angels was recommended by several staff members at Sentara…read moreBeach General. We needed 24/7 caregivers on short notice, and after calling multiple services, only Visiting Angels could provide staffing quickly. All the caregivers that they sent were very nice and professional, though their capabilities varied a great deal. The very first person they sent (who worked a double shift), didn't seem to know how to do anything. My father asked for help getting out of bed, and the caregiver didn't know how to lift him properly. He ended up being unable to stand, and dropped back in the bed at an awkward angle. He was too weak to move, and the caregiver didn't know how to shift him in the bed. She called her supervisor, who didn't provide help, and it took the caregiver, myself and my brother (none of whom had experience) to shift my father to a comfortable position. We got a call from Visiting Angels the next morning apologizing for what happened, but they sent the same person back again less than a week later. By that point my father was comatose and close to death, but she still struggled with simple tasks like changing his diaper. I'm not sure how she would have managed if my brother and I had not been there to help out. None of the other caregivers we got were that bad, though one did fall into a pretty deep sleep (had to be shaken awake). The reason this review is 3 stars instead of 1 is that one caregiver in particular was fantastic. Janet made sure my father was clean, changed his bed, and went well beyond the call of duty on her shifts. She was also there when my father passed, and we really appreciated her comfort and professionalism through a difficult time.

This company is awful to work for im reading the comments by clients and they are just as unhappy…read moreas most of the employees there. First of all they charge us 100 to 300 dollars to take the class then teach you how to make a bed and use a hoyer lift then send me to a house where there is a heart monitor not trained on but told how serious it was the company said they didnt know the family said they did know. I was sent to a house infested with bedbugs and roaches, a house with mouse traps everywhere so cluttered you could barely move around. I had a client be innappropriate making comments about my body etc just to find out from them hes done it before but you continue to send women to his house. Most of the clients were not happy either they claim they dont send you into those conditions during training but the clients say they dont do home visits they say they have never seen them before so how would you know what the conditions are. They had me on a 15 hr case then switched me to a 12.50 case then reduced the hrs from 8 to 6 and did not notify me at all about it or the client she finaly called them to find out why by the end of the week. I gave them the notice i felt they should have based on my experience with them 1 week and returned to my old job. Then i wake up today and they did not pay me. This company is ghetto they do not care about the employees at all it was the most unprofessional thing ive ever experienced and they have the nerve to charge for it. If you are used to real professionalism do not come here you will be highly disapointed. But my money im not playing about if its not in my account or mailbox by fri i will be taking this matter to court. No stars

My stepfather passed on January 3rd. My mother, who is grieving and having surgery of her own…read moresoon, is still receiving correspondence from them either either bills from after he passed or asking her to authorize automatic credit card payments. She has called them four times since his passing to request this stop. I have called twice. The first time I called I requested that they update the address if they could not guarantee she would stop receiving them to my email so that she did not have to continue dealing with it. She received another email. When I called, they had my email address and told me that they had a glitch in the new system that caused it to send to my mother again. This is the third time we have been told that it was due to the new program. The first woman hung up on me after I told her this was the only thing I wanted done. The woman I spoke with today (who was much more compassionate) told me they couldn't correct things until February 9th. Guess when I called the first time - that's right, February 9th. I had requested to speak to a manager or supervisor when I called today and they "couldn't talk to me and wanted my information." I still have not heard from anyone. You would think that a company who is supposed to "be a family of care and compassion" would be more empathetic to grieving families. While we were able to have a fantastic caretaker by the end of my stepfather's life, we had numerous other issues to get to that point. Many times, the bill would reflect fraudulent charges for days/times that no one came. There were plenty of instances when caregivers did not show up and no one ever alerted us that they would not be coming for the day. Luckily, we have enough family in the area to cover these things but anyone who is going to need to solely rely on this company should beware.

We were connected with Care Advantage Inc. (in Hampton Roads) through a program that helps dementia…read morepatients. The program contracted them for 72 hours of care in 4 hour sessions once per week which was a blessing because we needed the extra help. Unfortunately, our experience with this company has been terrible after about 3 visits. My grandmother lives in a memory care facility and has dementia. The only reason we contracted Care Advantage was to assist with bathing, as she often refuses and the facility cannot force her. Without proper bathing, she developed a serious skin infection, so this service is essential. From the start, communication and reliability were terrible. For the first three weeks, I had to personally call the aides (through cameras in her room) to remind them she needed a bath, even though this was clearly documented in her chart and was the sole purpose of their visits. After only four visits, the aides simply stopped showing up. It took me a full month of repeated phone calls and a call to the program that contracted them before I was finally contacted and services resumed. When they finally began again, shifts kept being rescheduled because the company "couldn't fill them." Just today, the aide assigned to my grandmother called me directly from the facility. She explained that no one at Care Advantage had informed her my grandmother was in memory care, and she couldn't handle it and was planning to cancel and leave because she would not have agreed to work with dementia patients. She only called me after unsuccessfully trying multiple times to reach her own company's office. After speaking to me she agreed to bathe my grandmother before leaving. This is not a reflection on the aide herself, she did follow through once I explained the situation. This review is about Care Advantage as a company. The fact that they did not even tell their own employee that my grandmother was in memory care is unacceptable. What would have happened if my grandmother were at home alone with dementia and the aide had decided to leave without care? The company is nearly impossible to reach by phone, unreliable in keeping appointments, and demonstrates extremely poor internal communication. In just two months, they have proven themselves untrustworthy and disorganized. At this point, I would not even trust them to watch my pets, let alone provide essential care for a vulnerable dementia patient. Out of the four caregivers that have visited my grandmother only one of them sat and spoke with her... the others sat on their phone, ignored my grandmother and generally just seemed annoyed to be there. I cannot recommend Care Advantage Inc. to anyone who needs consistent, dependable caregiving. UPDATE: I was just contacted by the facility that my grandmother is living in. They told me that she was not bathed (they couldn't find any wet wash clothes in the room). Her cloths were changed...
