We were connected with Care Advantage Inc. (in Hampton Roads) through a program that helps dementia patients. The program contracted them for 72 hours of care in 4 hour sessions once per week which was a blessing because we needed the extra help. Unfortunately, our experience with this company has been terrible after about 3 visits. My grandmother lives in a memory care facility and has dementia. The only reason we contracted Care Advantage was to assist with bathing, as she often refuses and the facility cannot force her. Without proper bathing, she developed a serious skin infection, so this service is essential. From the start, communication and reliability were terrible. For the first three weeks, I had to personally call the aides (through cameras in her room) to remind them she needed a bath, even though this was clearly documented in her chart and was the sole purpose of their visits. After only four visits, the aides simply stopped showing up. It took me a full month of repeated phone calls and a call to the program that contracted them before I was finally contacted and services resumed. When they finally began again, shifts kept being rescheduled because the company "couldn't fill them." Just today, the aide assigned to my grandmother called me directly from the facility. She explained that no one at Care Advantage had informed her my grandmother was in memory care, and she couldn't handle it and was planning to cancel and leave because she would not have agreed to work with dementia patients. She only called me after unsuccessfully trying multiple times to reach her own company's office. After speaking to me she agreed to bathe my grandmother before leaving. This is not a reflection on the aide herself, she did follow through once I explained the situation. This review is about Care Advantage as a company. The fact that they did not even tell their own employee that my grandmother was in memory care is unacceptable. What would have happened if my grandmother were at home alone with dementia and the aide had decided to leave without care? The company is nearly impossible to reach by phone, unreliable in keeping appointments, and demonstrates extremely poor internal communication. In just two months, they have proven themselves untrustworthy and disorganized. At this point, I would not even trust them to watch my pets, let alone provide essential care for a vulnerable dementia patient. Out of the four caregivers that have visited my grandmother only one of them sat and spoke with her... the others sat on their phone, ignored my grandmother and generally just seemed annoyed to be there. I cannot recommend Care Advantage Inc. to anyone who needs consistent, dependable caregiving. UPDATE: I was just contacted by the facility that my grandmother is living in. If there were zero stars I would give zero. They left us with no one at 7 this morning - we heard this from the on site caregiver when no one showed up - thankfully she agreed to stay on until someone else arrived at 3. Tonight at 10 p.m they called and advised us the caregiver was leaving and could not spend the night. The caregiver informed us she had tried to reach them all day and left messages that she could not spend the night - we find out at 10:00 p.m. Stay away from this company. Do not trust these people to care for your loved ones. The worst experience we have ever had with a home health care agency and during a very trying time with an elderly relative unable to be alone. Sentara SHOULD NOT have them on their recommended home care list!!! read more

All I can say is make sure you are being charged for the actual hours that they have caregivers there. I have paid alot of money, which is no problem, as long as people (that I am being charged for) are there. It is really hard to keep track of who is there and when, because I have a job (and my mother is elder) and am just relying on these people just being honest. I would highly not recommend this company. It has been 4 months after them admitting that they were overcharging me with still no refund. I really don't see how these people sleep at night! My stepfather passed on January 3rd. My mother, who is grieving and having surgery of her own soon, is still receiving correspondence from them either either bills from after he passed or asking her to authorize automatic credit card payments. She has called them four times since his passing to request this stop. I have called twice. The first time I called I requested that they update the address if they could not guarantee she would stop receiving them to my email so that she did not have to continue dealing with it. She received another email. When I called, they had my email address and told me that they had a glitch in the new system that caused it to send to my mother again. This is the third time we have been told that it was due to the new program. The first woman hung up on me after I told her this was the only thing I wanted done. The woman I spoke with today (who was much more compassionate) told me they couldn't correct things until February 9th. Guess when I called the first time - that's right, February 9th. I had requested to speak to a manager or supervisor when I called today and they "couldn't talk to me and wanted my information." I still have not heard from anyone. You would think that a company who is supposed to "be a family of care and compassion" would be more empathetic to grieving families. While we were able to have a fantastic caretaker by the end of my stepfather's life, we had numerous other issues to get to that point. Many times, the bill would reflect fraudulent charges for days/times that no one came. There were plenty of instances when caregivers did not show up and no one ever alerted us that they would not be coming for the day. Luckily, we have enough family in the area to cover these things but anyone who is going to need to solely rely on this company should beware. read more

One of the worst business you could work for or send your love one to. Office is beyond unprofessional. Sits in there talking about everything and everyone rather than doing there job. Makes jokes about patients. I have WITNESSED them rolling their eyes and not answering calls for patients because they don't wanna work. They don't care about patients or workers. Messes checks up all the times. Just unprofessional all around. Sends people out to patients homes knowing they don't need service just to make you think your schedule is filled. If i could leave 0 stars I would because they don't even deserve 1. Save your self your time and your loved ones. read more

NOTE: I'm editing to add one star. See edit below. My mom is a current client; she's in end-of-life care and is nonverbal, so I'm managing her care. Care Advantage came well recommended - but I'm having trouble seeing WHY. After my mom's massive stroke, I contacted CA to arrange 24/7 in-home care for her final weeks. We are 72 hours into the relationship, and already we've had a 3-hour coverage lapse, and, FAR more important, two different caregivers have let my mom sit in a wet diaper overnight!!! I don't care about small coverage lapses. Things happen. Folks get sick, or have other crises, and call out. That's understandable. Sending out folks who don't know how to keep a patient clean and dry is NOT understandable. It's inexcusable. Credit where it's due: Several of the caregivers have been quite good, and the one who is here now is outstanding. I've requested that she be assigned to us for as many shifts as possible. That's why this is a two star review instead of a one-star. The agency has been - let's just say, less than fully responsive to my concerns. They were very apologetic and responsive to the coverage lapse, but that's of far less concern to me than caregivers who either don't know how to do the job, or won't bother! And they haven't so much as apologized for that. I'm paying for a service - and they are NOT reliably providing it. It isn't about the money ... I'd pay far, far more if that's what it took to get decent care. I'm very tempted to change to a different agency, but now that we've found one caregiver that's actually skilled and dedicated, I'm hesitant to start over. Situations like these are so difficult. I will probably never in my life make decisions or take actions where the stakes are any higher - few things could possibly matter more than making sure a loved one is comfortable in their final days! And I fear I've made a dreadful error in working with Care Advantage. EDIT: After a very rocky start, things have improved somewhat. CA has apologized, and has volunteered to not charge us for the two nights of unsatisfactory service. And the person on the day shift, Kasheera(sp?), is absolutely terrific and has mad skills! But I would still never use CA again. So far, most of the caregivers lack even basic skills, like how to maneuver a bedridden patient using a draw sheet, to roll them, turn them, change a diaper, etc. Those are the bare rudimentary skills that anyone doing this work should have. read more

Don't use care advantage you'll be at a disadvantage. There was one girl who was great and the others not so much... related to other peoples post, we experienced similar situations. It seems as if the company doesn't care about their clients and their families with their scheduling model and reaching out to families to let them know someone will not be there or will be late. read more

I give Care Advantage 2 stars because of the VERY FEW caregivers we have had, every single one has been amazing. My mom lives with us and needs care during the day after going through 5 weeks of chemo and radiation daily. She needs very basic things like someone to walk with her, help prepare meals, clean up her room and bathroom, and just stand outside the door while she showers. She has a little bit of "chemo brain", but she was otherwise okay as long as she isn't completely alone for 8-10 hours 3 days per week. Initially, I requested 7:30am -2pm, Monday through Friday. We got our Tuesday/Thursday caregiver (Dayon) right off the bat and she has stayed with us. I truly could not do this whole stressful situation without her. Originally we had someone M/W/F (Leatrice) who was also outstanding but is not available permanently. Now we have been 2 weeks without anyone here M/W/F. Her mobility has declined and she has declined cognitively too. When the initial assessment was done we were told that they were fully staffed, there would be no problem getting someone in-home daily, etc. Turns out, that was not true AT ALL. Not only are we without care, but I frequently find myself fixing our schedule for them. There is a website you can log on to that has the monthly schedule, weekly schedule, caregiver information, etc. I have to log on EVERY SINGLE DAY to check to see if we have someone for M/W/F. My husband and I had a camping trip planned for the Memorial Day weekend, a few months ago we thought we would have no problem getting a caregiver for the extra hours. I don't want to pay any cancelation fees, so we just asked our family to come and stay for the long weekend so we can still go. It has been a NIGHTMARE scheduling and canceling the days for the long weekend. They now have days open for every weekend that I have to cancel. Ultimately, I would like to find a different facility, but I don't want to lose Dayon. My mom and I absolutely love her. I can't chance going back to 5 days a week with nobody. My advice is to start with a different in-home care provider. This has added so much stress to an already stressful situation, it is almost unbearable. I am literally watching my mother's cognitive ability decline because we are at work all day. Now they have suggested I change the hours to 8am-5pm. The thought process is someone might prefer getting more hours. Ummmmmmmmmmmmm DON'T YOU KNOW YOUR STAFF? DON'T YOU TALK TO THEM DAILY? Why TF is it my job to try to figure out what they need? Just skip the stress and check the reviews of the place before making a decision. read more

The aide had very poor personal hygiene. And she watched tv, no making my mother meals, no checking to see if she needed her meds, no cleaning. On her last day she walked out while my mother was having multiple frontal lobe strokes. They are very lucky we did not seek out an attorney. They have some nice personnel but one was over the top rude and discriminatory. read more

Crooked company. They illegally debited billing from my mothers account for services not rendered. Billing has not refunded the money and continues to give excuses as to why the money has not been sent. Fraudulent. Imagine how they would treat your loved ones!!! read more

My mom was given 7 different caregivers.. no communication as to who was coming.. caregiver s had their own schedule . They'll be late 20mi uses, no show., be outside making personal calls while my mom 86 y/o is by herself. My daughter who is also have medical issues was called to feed my mom. Personall hygiene has been ignored . I have to wait til I get home to help bathe her. Light house work? I prepared my mom's breakfast, make sure her meds are given.. My mom's mental health has declined in the month since my mom had services and lost weight . Communication with the staff and scheduler , scheduler was not aware whether the staff was at the clients home or not.. Director never returned call.. read more

Getting aides to show up was a little tricky at first. A few of the aides they initially sent to us were not experienced at all. We were frustrated and about to switch to a different service but after many phone calls from us everything started coming together. We now have regularly scheduled visits every day. My mom is bed bound and has late stage dementia. The aides who come to care for her are very sweet and patient. Sometimes I peek in the room and see them talking and laughing. Makes me feel good. I recommend Care Advantage, Chesapeake, VA. Just stay on top of things from the very beginning. read more

While my mother was under hospice care, we scheduled 12 days of home care with Care Advantage. Of those 12 days, a caregiver only showed up 6 times and one of those six, she was an hour and 20 minutes late and had an attitude so we sent her away. Calling on a weekend was a waste of time. They only returned one of my multiple calls and never found someone to fill in for an aide that failed to show up. The weekend call center personnel were rude telling me they were very busy and I should call during normal business hours. We fired them and moved to Seniorcorp. Seniorcorp was exceptional. On time with well trained personnel and they were $2 an hour less. Only sign up with care advantage if you enjoy the run around and doing all the care yourself. read more

Frequent no shows. Very disruptive Office scheduler frequently does not tell client when aide will be late or not coming. Notice needs to be at least a day in advance to plan for other appointments, order for rx pick up, and grocery pick up. Not able to take a nap when expecting aide, but I couldn't do so because I've been expecting visits from Care Advantage all afternoon. Instead of preventing stress and making life easier, it is disruptive, especially for people with disabilities and in pain. Do not use this company. They do not return phone calls for a starter. My 95 yo father with low vision needed monthly house cleaning. We called Care Advantage and eventually someone returned the call (2+ weeks later) and arranged to come out and visit my father. The woman who arrived said she was the location's manager. She spoke with my father for over an hour - he had a detailed 13 page list of the cleaning needed done in each room. She had him sign a contract arranging to have a team come once a month. Two days later she returned to get his credit card information. The week before the team was to arrived, my father realized the day schedule was not going to work and called the office. It took two days for them to return the call and was told they would come the day after the scheduled day. On the new scheduled day he received a call saying they couldn't make it and would try to come the following day. That is the last he heard from them. He tried to call the manager and calls were not returned. Finally he reached someone about 3 weeks later and was told he was on the schedule for the following week. On the day, a single woman arrived and asked "where's the patient?" Dad explained and she said she was not a house cleaner, she was a care giver. Both made calls to the office with no answer. Messages left by my father were not returned. Eventually someone called saying they just needed his email address to complete his file. My dad asked to speak to that person's manager. He was put through to a gentleman who said he was the husband of the woman who had come to my father's home. He informed my father that they are a home health care company and (despite their website) they do not do house cleaning. (Make sense of that will you?) He was rude and disrespectful. That's the last my father has heard or had any contact with the company. He plans to write to the parent company with cc's to the BBB and the health care licensing company they answer to. read more
