I chose Visiting Angels over Senior Corp because Angels was so much better about staying in touch. I live 430 miles away from my mother, and I needed help that was going to communicate with me in a timely manner. Visiting Angels gets high marks for communication. As it turned out, by the time we got the scheduling worked out, mom was feeling much stronger and did not want the service. Dean Longo at the Norfolk office was incredibly understanding about the change in plans, and just wonderfully professional to work with. I have Visiting Angels in my back pocket and will not hesitate to call them again.

We needed 24/7 caregivers on short notice, and after calling multiple services, only Visiting Angels could provide staffing quickly. All the caregivers that they sent were very nice and professional, though their capabilities varied a great deal. The very first person they sent (who worked a double shift), didn't seem to know how to do anything. My father asked for help getting out of bed, and the caregiver didn't know how to lift him properly. He ended up being unable to stand, and dropped back in the bed at an awkward angle. He was too weak to move, and the caregiver didn't know how to shift him in the bed. She called her supervisor, who didn't provide help, and it took the caregiver, myself and my brother (none of whom had experience) to shift my father to a comfortable position. We got a call from Visiting Angels the next morning apologizing for what happened, but they sent the same person back again less than a week later. By that point my father was comatose and close to death, but she still struggled with simple tasks like changing his diaper. I'm not sure how she would have managed if my brother and I had not been there to help out. None of the other caregivers we got were that bad, though one did fall into a pretty deep sleep (had to be shaken awake). The reason this review is 3 stars instead of 1 is that one caregiver in particular was fantastic. Janet made sure my father was clean, changed his bed, and went well beyond the call of duty on her shifts. She was also there when my father passed, and we really appreciated her comfort and professionalism through a difficult time.

They provided much information that helped me with my healing. They even came out and removed my stitches. What I thought was going to be very painful was actually a very easy process and the fact that they came to do it in my home. Made it even easier. I also had physical therapy through this company and the therapist that they sent out to work with me, Mandy, was amazing. She worked with me and got me to the appropriate range of motion. As a matter fact, I surpassed the range that I needed to be at at my three week post op window. She's very patient and has taught me a lot of exercises that has helped me strengthen my knee and be able to become more independent quickly. I am very happy with this company and look forward to working with them again when I replace my right knee.

My wife finally had to go out and get her. Today she calls me at 9:07 am to say she will be at my home in 15 minutes and for me to call to confirm.. She never came by my house, stopped or came to my door. I was in the bathroom at the time of her call but called her back at 9:23 am. She responded via text at 9:53 am to tell me I didn't respond quick enough that she was in Norfolk and wouldn't be back in Va. Beach today. I responded via text and got no response from her. I called the office and spoke with a supervisor who eventually called an me back an hour or so later to say that someone would be out today but no time frame was given for their arrival. You would think they would call at least the day before to give you an arrival time frame. I don't take my phone into the shower with me or carry it every where I go. They do have some good nurses but the one (Jennifer) I had today is horrible and her supervisor wasn't any better.

While Yelp may not be the ideal place to review a hospice provider, after reading another review of…read moreWings Over Virginia, I felt it was important to share our experience. My wife passed away in May after receiving hospice care from Wings Over Virginia. Throughout her time in hospice, the care, compassion, and support provided by their staff were exceptional. My wife was a nurse, and on many occasions she commented on how pleased she was with the professionalism, kindness, and attentiveness of the nurses, aides, and other staff members who cared for her. Whenever supplies, medications, or medical equipment were needed, they were provided promptly. Medications were delivered directly to our home, and the hospice team worked diligently to keep her comfortable. We also understood the limitations of the Medicare hospice benefit, which does not provide full-time custodial care. Family members and close friends worked together to provide day-to-day care, with valuable support and guidance from the hospice team. I am deeply grateful for the care Wings Over Virginia provided to my wife and our family during one of the most difficult times of our lives. Based on our experience, I would not hesitate to recommend them.

The nurses they send are nice enough, but completely ineffectual and possibly incompetent. They couldn't provide the correct equipment and tortured my dad trying to insert the wrong sized equipment over a period of days before ordering the correct size. He was too sick by the time it finally arrived to use it. They do not provide comfort medications via IVs, nor IMs (intra-muscular). Although they may prescribe oral meds, my father ended up slooooowly drowning to death, painfully, and horribly- all the while conscious and aware- for days. There was no foresight that at some point he would not be able to ingest the medications. In my dad's last hours, my mom begged and pleaded with Wings Over Virginia to help change her dying husband's bedsheets because she could not lift him to do it herself. They flat out told her that was not part of her services and did not come to help her. Most unforgivable, was their inability to provide the comfortable, dignified death they promise. No one's family deserves to be treated like this and NO ONE deserves to die like this.
