I came here yesterday morning for brunch with my mom. We sat down and were greeted by a happy waitress who was so kind with whatever we needed. My mom had an egg and asked specifically that it wasn't runny. She's not a picky eater, but runny eggs are one of the plates she dislikes the most. I had chocolate chip pancakes (because why not?). Breakfast was served promptly and our waitress came back multiple times to see if we needed more coffee or juice, or just anything in general. My pancakes were spot on and delicious. My mother's eggs however... were runny. It may seem strange that she decided to keep them, but we had a day to fill with activities and we both wanted to get on with the day. Mid breakfast, the booths started filling up and the energy kept growing. I knew walking in that this would be a cute family diner. Don't get me wrong, it has a certain welcoming feel to it that you can't get everywhere. However, me and my mom decided to finish brunch early because of the atmosphere created by other patrons. There were kids screaming all around the whole diner, running around, and disrupting our once perfect breakfast. I understand how hard it is to take young kids out. And knowing that, I wouldn't care if a baby started to cry a little bit or if there were some rowdy kids in the corner just trying to keep themselves busy. But this was a whole new level. I could barely think straight. With a family diner, comes families with kids. The food was great and the service was warm and friendly. Just don't expect to have a quiet, peaceful brunch. read more

Stopped here on the way to Montauk Lighthouse during our vacation. The place looked quaint so we decided to grab a bite and check it out. It's small inside, but cozy. Everything is well worn but clean, not a problem at all. We sat at the counter and were taken care of very attentively by the friendly wait staff. As soon as we saw they had home made ice cream we decided to split sandwiches so we'd have room. Sandwiches were good enough, not crazy good or something I'd necessarily recommend to try. Just about what you would make at home. We had egg and bacon sandwich and our son and daughter had grilled cheese and bacon. We split an order of fries (lots of fries!) which were a little well done for our liking but good anyway. Ice cream: I have to say, we were a bit disappointed. It wasn't bad ice cream, very flavorful. But to us it tasted a bit icy like it might have been a bit old and sat awhile. I'd rather say it was average. The flavors we tried were vanilla, mint chocolate chip, and coffee. Hubby had a vanilla shake. I'd recommend this place for ambiance but I would say for ice cream maybe not. For brunch/lunch/breakfast, this is a bad choice - low quality, small servings, slow service. My girlfriend and I came here with her aunt for brunch on a mid-August Saturday around noon. After figuring out how to get a table, we sat down with no wait - there was a 5-10 minute wait or so to get menus though. The aunt and I went with french toast, my girlfriend went with two eggs. The food came out about 25-30 minutes later, expected as it was pretty busy. My french toast was far from the thick-cut french toast we're all used to, it was just three regular slices of bread. It tasted okay, just okay, but not enough food for the money. My girl's eggs with cheese just had a barely-melted piece of American cheese on top of some unseasoned scrambled eggs. The potatoes were kind of crappy too. Cash only, slow service, looks like a cut-rate diner. The ice cream could be good but we didn't try it. But as a diner for brunch, the food just isn't good. Today I went here for breakfast. I'm a regular here so once I walk through the door they already start to make my order. The usual 2 pancakes, hash browns and large chocolate milk. The pancakes are always good, and the hash browns taste amazing and the chocolate milk is surprisingly their own chocolate syrup with milk. Their homemade ice cream is incredible. It's a crime if you go to this place and don't get a milkshake or an ice cream soda. This is one of the Hamptons' only diner, and definitely the best. Their menu is pretty typical, not as extensive as most diners, but if you feel like a burger, a BLT, a really amazing tuna melt or even a gyro, this is definitely the place to go. The prices are awesome, especially for the Hamptons. The service is pretty good, the waitresses are all pretty lax which goes with the atmosphere of the place, but it tends to get really busy on weekends and in the summer (and especially weekends in the summer) and they keep up pretty well. I've been going here for years and it's always been really consistently awesome. If you're in the area, definitely give it a try. read more

I have been going to Candy Kitchen since I was a kid and now I take my kids here and it is always great. I think with any diner you have to order appropriately and you will never be disappointed. The staple of Candy Kitchen has always been their ice cream, especially the milk shakes that can accompany any meal. The milk shakes are just as good as they were twenty years ago, thick and chunky and perfect! I like both breakfast and lunch here. Standard breakfast has been great time after time. Two eggs scrambled, probably some of the best sausage I have ever had, toast and hash browns - great plate. Egg sandwiches are nice too, as well as pancakes. I mean this is a diner and the food is appropriate and very solid. Only drawback is that the OJ is not fresh squeezed, would be nice, but hey. Lunch is a turkey club for twenty straight years, still the same, still very, very good with nice fries. Stick to smart ordering and you will not be disappointed and there is no way someone does not love a milk shake from Candy Kitchen, no chance. read more

I love it here. It's a happy beach diner that keeps the Hamptons humble. It is family run and everyone there is just incredibly nice. The food is nothing to write home about, but it's a diner, so they will prepare anything you want at really reasonable prices (especially for the Hamptons). On the other hand, their ice cream is home-made and incredible. From mint chocolate chip to black raspberry, you just need to try them. Event he cocount one. If you get a milkshake, make sure it is extra extra thick, because it often seems watered down. The iced tea is good and coffee isn't burnt. When you sit, make sure to get a table in the front room since many screaming children inhabit the back. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. My friend and I came in here for food and were waiting next to a table for it to be cleaned. Wow! Who would ever sit down at a table that they were about to eat a meal at?!?!?! What a horrible and completely obscene thing for someone to do. Anyways, we left before we even ordered any food. If you're thinking about coming to this place... do NOT. Unless, of course, you want to be helped by staff that is bitter and disrespectful for absolutley no reason. But then again, if I was 40-years-old wearing bright blue eyeshadow and fake eyelashes waitressing at a shitty restaurant the day after the 4th of July, maybe I would act like a constipated bitch, too. I give this 5 stars because of many factors: service, the fact that the owner is there more often than not making sure everything is perfect, the food, the ambiance, and the fact that it is kid-friendly. So many breakfasts, so many memories. Despite the fact that we seem to order the same thing all the time, it's always superb. Except the coffee. That could use some work. But the food: perfectly poached eggs, every time, on perfectly done hash (crisp on the outside, hot and tasty on the inside)....then a recent lunch with kids and parent/friends....every one of 8 sandwiches was outstanding...the french fries thin and crisp...the kids were delighted with the chicken fingers...all in all a very happy place to count on. We were going to come back for a sundae later but figured since it was tipping toward 11am, we were there and on vacation, we'd just get dessert after breakfast. Don't judge me. This is an example of nostalgia and the yearning to return to childhood, triumphing over common sense and a reasonable expectation of being treated well. Were it not for it's location and the blind devotion of some, it would be boarded up. Now don't get me wrong, I truly mourn the demise of some institutions (like Jon Duck's)but I would not cry to see this place gone. I have been here for breakfast many times in the last 16 years ( often under duress) and it has never impressed or improved. The food is mediocre, the service is awful. People come in from the front door and the backdoor at the same time and the staff is too inept to keep track of who came in first. On many a Sunday morning, there are screaming patrons arguing over who gets the next table. They often drown out the screaming children. Really good homemade ice cream! We're bringing a group out to the Hamptons in early April so I had to do my "homework" ;) and try out the ice cream before the whole gang gets there. My daughter and I bought a single scoop just to try it and the owner was kind enough to let us get several mini scoops so we could try a few of the flavors. My absolute favorite....maple walnut. Huge chunks of walnuts with a sweet (but not TOO sweet) ice cream. We also tried the mint chocolate chip. It had nice mint flavor with large chips. Mocha chip was okay but could have definitely used more coffee flavor in the ice cream. Chocolate chocolate chip was good, also with large chips. I will definitely make this a regular stop anytime I'm out in the Hamptons....and will definitely take our group there in April. read more

I was really craving ice cream when I stopped here. There is plenty of place inside to sit, either at the counter or at tables. After much deliberation, I decided to go with a small cone of coffee chip, and my boyfriend got the mint chip. It was OK. I usually love homemade mom-and-pop shop ice cream, but this place just didn't do it for me. It tasted more like the boxed ice cream you get at the super market. Long time patron of Candy Kitchen. It is a great old-fashioned ice cream shop (shoppe?) and classic soda shop-lunch counter, etc. like something out of Back to the Future. The owner, Gus, has maintained that classic charm and continues to run an efficient operation devoid of corporate influence (this is decidedly NOT a Starbucks or other corporate chain-type establishment). The homemade ice cream flavors are wonderful and traditional and always taste fresh. That means excellent milk shakes too. The food is a typical "diner" menu, though not as extensive as a true Diner, but you'll get whatever breakfast, lunch or dinner staples you are craving. Burgers and salads are excellent and, while I maintain that tuna salad depends very much on an individual diner's personal preference, my kids and I believe that this is the best tuna sandwich around. And the bread is always very soft, adding to our enjoyment. The staff is courteous and friendly even during the summer season when it can be very crowded (no reservations, in case you were wondering). It is a treat every time we visit (or even dining alone at the counter) and we can highly recommend Candy Kitchen (aka Candy Chicken, the mispronunciation that one child made years ago and for us, it stuck!) read more
