I reached out to Brian a few months ago, hoping that he can somehow improve my voice so that birds no longer drop out of the sky whenever I sing. I am an actor and have always shied away from theater auditions because of the singing component, and I was ready to change that. Alas, a few months and 13 sessions with Brian later, I can actually listen to a recording of my own singing voice and think "Hey! That sounded pretty good!" which I never thought would happen. The way Brian explains how the voice works allows you to visualize your own body as an instrument, which makes a world of difference when trying to make adjustments. When he helps you make an adjustment, you can physically feel the difference so that you can recreate it again and again until it becomes second nature. I never felt like I was throwing darts in the dark. Making a change during an exercise then being able to immediately apply it to a song that you're working on feels incredible. His expertise aside, Brian is just an overall very friendly and approachable guy. He balances serious professionalism with a sense of humor that can put anyone at ease. I can't explain the feeling of being able to hit notes that were completely inaccessible to me just a few sessions ago. I love jamming. Whether it's with a friend or by myself, I love singing and playing my guitar. I, however, never got vocal lessons. I found out about Brian's vocal lessons through yelp after searching "free vocal lessons" (l o l I know) on Yelp. Upon reading all the positive reviews, I decided to call the phone number provided on the business page to no avail. I called a second time, and Brian picked up. I had told Brian that I was interested in the "1 Free Introductory Voice Lesson" and he said that he would get back to me as soon as possible as he was in the middle of a session. He also had told me to text him my name so that he could call me back. I ended up booking an appointment with him this past Monday (11/19/17) which changed my life. Unfortunately, I live in Long Beach so the drive to Pasadena was about an hour. I, stupidly, left my house at 12:30 P.M. (when my session was at 1:00 P.M.) and asked Brian if we could reschedule. He, however, said that it was okay that I come at 1:30 P.M. (my eta) because he was available. I called Brian right after I parked (on his side of the street as told to) and he told me to just walk straight to his garage where his mini studio (WOW I know!) was located. He had informed me to 1. prepare a song that I knew well that was mildly challenging for me and 2. bring a phone with a recording app with at least 2GB of free space ("voice memos" that comes standard on the iPhone worked perfect). The session: I was actually told by someone a while back to flex my stomach whenever I sang to properly "sing" from my diaphragm. Brian debunked that myth for me and THOROUGHLY explained to me what singing from your diaphragm actually means through an anatomical picture of a diaphragm. Just throughout the whole session, Brian backed up everything he was saying by showing me the anatomy of the internal organs of the body. In addition to the anatomy, Brian also told me that because he had extensive experience working with different vocal teachers, he had figured out which methods of singing were correct. This also comforted me because I figured that I'm learning from someone who experienced incorrect methods so that I don't have to experience those methods. Brian mentioned at the beginning of the session that he wasn't a naturally gifted singer and that he worked his butt off to hit certain notes. When I heard that, for 1. I immediately grew respect for him and 2. I'm also not a naturally gifted singer so it was encouraging to hear that someone like me could improve my vocal range. I believe I ended up staying past the "free" hour but Brian was very understanding. I'm now scheduled for my next session with Brian this Saturday and will now consider meeting with Brian on a continuous basis. Brian charges $80 which I think is worth what he brings to the table: his energy, his education, and his humor. Brian's the man. I first started lessons with Brian in approximately year 2017-2018 and have been with about 3 vocal coaches/teachers prior to Brian within a span of about 4 years. He definitely tops all of them, as he takes a very technical approach to singing. All the other coaches before did not explain the intricacies of the voice, nor properly diagnose the issues that I was experiencing with my vocal technique. One of the main reasons I appreciate Brian's teaching is that he is able to diagnose you as a singer where you are at in your vocal level/skill and journey, identify the deficiencies, and teach you how to treat them and improve upon them. For the longest time I would use YouTube videos of vocal teachers, in addition to in-person vocal coaches and I could not figure out why I was not improving in the manner I wanted to. Online YouTube videos are great for learning how to sing; however, there is a certain limit you reach when relying solely on them because you need a proper trainer to diagnose where you are at as a vocalist/singer. We are all in different places in our vocal journeys and have very unique voices, therefore requiring someone with the eyes and ears to properly identify what defects that we have in our techniques and apply the right approach to fix them and improve upon them. As an example, I greatly struggle with my mid to low range and singing through initial verses of a song can be very exhausting and difficult. The reason why is because I was applying the techniques and tonalities that I use in my high range to my lower range and now I'm learning how to train my voice to apply the proper techniques and tonalities according to the range I'm in. No vocal coach prior to Brian diagnosed this issue or properly explained it to me. Brian is truly a vocal technician. read more

I have been singing on and off for about 15 years, but I've never gotten serious about singing until 2 years ago when I started to sing in the USC Concert Choir. Since most of my influence on my current singing technique comes from the classical/choir side of things, I thought I needed some help in sounding more "pop" and eliminating some of my choir habits that might not be the best for a solo singer. So I went to visit Brian last Saturday to have him help me out with Maroon 5's Sunday Morning, a song I'm planning to sing in a singing contest. On top of giving you instructions of how does he want you to sing, he also spends time in explaining why he wants you to sing in the way he wants you to sing, which was really helpful to me. Some of his instructions can be a little... unorthodox, such as the "Chinese Stance" and "Snarl", but they always end up in producing a better quality of sound, and of course he explains why he's asking to snarl or stand in an awkward stance.
