I'd always been interested in singing, but after hearing myself attempt to sing in the past, I was convinced I was tone-deaf and felt discouraged. After my acting teacher recommended all actors do vocal training, I took the opportunity to try it. As an adult beginner with no real singing experience, searching for a place to start was intimidating, but I'm so glad I took the leap with this studio. Through the Vocal Foundation program with Stuart Wheeler, I've learned that I'm indeed NOT tone-deaf, and that with the right training and technique, I've been able to unlock a part of my voice that I've not been able to access until now. Stuart is a highly-skilled teacher, singer, and musician, with the ability to articulate complex musical terms in a way that easily clicks in my mind (and I'm not an easy person to teach!). He is a patient, compassionate instructor who provides a safe, fun space to learn and explore. I've enjoyed being able to choose the songs that we work on. My lessons have always been insightful and surprisingly empowering. In just a few months, I've gained much more control and confidence in my own voice, expanded my range, learned to be more mentally focused and present, and have sharpened my listening skills. I can now sing for pleasure without being so self-conscious. My vocal training has even helped improve my piano and guitar practice! The session rates are reasonable and the location/parking are convenient. I haven't had a chance to work directly with Jane but she has been lovely over our communications. I've worked with so many amazing singing teachers in the past. Jane, simply put is the best singing teacher I've ever had. Jane is an incredible combination of thoughtful, intuitive, perceptive, kind and so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so -- inspirational. I've worked with her exclusively online throughout the pandemic. I've gained such a deeper understanding of voice, resonance, mixing, falsetto and chest voice, and learned so many subtleties that I never understood before. For a while I've been having trouble with keeping my larynx low before I started with Jane -- using her techniques I was able to learn to keep it low -- permanently. I kept getting injured trying to sing high or developing tension in my neck -- in just a few months of lessons with Jane this is not an issue at all. I can sing as high as I want -- without fear of injury or strain. Jane is also very adaptable, whatever you want to work on or do -- she supports you throughout. She is also an excellent listener -- an indispensable quality for a teacher. I also love that she lets me pick my own songs -- many in Russian -- every lesson is a perfect combination of VERY challenging, safe, encouraging, and so much fun. I honestly don't want to take lessons with anyone else after this. Jane really cares about her students and it shows. Whatever we are working on, she takes the time to send me extra thoughts and supplementary materials in between classes. She really loves music and what she does and that really shows and makes a tremendous difference in how amazing her teaching is. So, to sum it up -- technically brilliant, intuitive, warm, kind -- always on time. Encourages you to work hard but in a very kind and human way. I also felt like Jane was always so involved and engaged, she was never just going through the motions. She was always very engaged, involved, and focused and in a great mood every lesson -- and would put me in a great mood if I was having not a great day. Finally -- and this is really important -- Jane has the ability to inspire you and to give feedback in the most encouraging way I have ever heard. Singing is very personal and it takes extreme personal talent to be able to not only give feedback but do it in a way that's personal, encouraging, inspirational. I've been given feedback before by other teachers that was not encouraging just by clumsy phrasing or the way something would come across. That never happened with Jane. She has a tremendous ability to be very very encouraging -- and not for the sake of being encouraging -- she means it. She made me realize many unique strengths of my voice -- falsetto being one -- in the most positive way. I think a teacher's ability to inspire and build up their students is one of the key components of a great teacher. Jane is such a teacher. At the end of each lesson I feel like not only that I'm learning technically and becoming a better singer -- but also I feel inspired that I can do anything I want to do when it comes to singing and life in general. I really appreciate the technical skill, insight, and the kindness and encouragement that Jane brings. She is naturally such a positive person, there's so much light in her, after you have as many lessons with her as I've had -- you start to take off some of the same qualities and it's truly truly wonderful. I wish we could clone Jane so that for other subjects there could be an instructor that is as technically sound and thoughtful but also kind, supportive, encouraging, and inspirational. I was a bit strained cardio wise yesterday for my lesson (I'm at high elevation now and overdid some cardo things in the couple of days before that) and I was getting super winded. Jane asked me if I wanted to end the lesson early and refunded me for the extra half an hour, which I really appreciated and was very kind. I've had teachers pressure me to continue with the lessons even when I was injured because (I suspect) THEY needed to keep making money. It's really nice to have a teacher that puts her student's welfare above everything else. Bottom line is -- Jane is awesome, she really has something special and so unique, lesson with Jane is like church for me every week -- I will move around everything else (I have many appointments) but lesson with Jane is like -- not missing that, come hell or high water. Wish I could add more stars! I've been with Jane about a year and a half now, and I find her training to be invaluable. I have learned so much about music, singing, breathing, sound placement, and so much more. In just a few months, my she helped me increase my range through note placement. I can sing things now I never thought I had the voice for. She also helped me develop my chest voice, something I had never sung in prior to her lessons. She is incredibly focused and professional, and her studio is very calming. I'm 54, I've lived a very colorful life, at times, it has served me well and other times, it's been filled with failure and loss. However, those are all the end product of decisions I've made on my own; so I've learned to accept the good with the bad and always try to take the positive out of all my experiences. There has been a times in my life that I've had to turn away from things I wanted to do, things I wanted to have and things I wanted to contribute to. While I tell myself it's ok, I'm not in as desperate of circumstances as some, it can still be a little soul crushing. And then, there are days like today! I was completely happy w/ Jane's instructions and very pleased to have found such an encouraging instructor, however, the disappointment came when I lost my voice due to my own incident and she went ahead and voided my lessons. Her policy stated that 4 pre-paid lessons must be used in 4-5 weeks within that one month. And so at one lesson a week, I still have one lesson left at that last week of the month. However, I lost my voice at that very week...... I recall that is a $85 value per lesson at the time or somewhere around that. I made a complaint about this unavoidable incident and so she gave me one more week to use it or she will void it. Unfortunately I was still without voice at the end of that week, she went ahead & voided the lesson completely. I was very disappointed at her business practice. Of all the lessons I've taken vocally, and pianos and worked w/ multiple instructors privately, no one ever had such policy that dishonors the payment w/ such strict timeline, especially when it's not out of pleasure or irresponsibility. I think she is a great teacher, however, her business practice, to me, is in question. As an instructor myself in performing arts, I never force my students to use up their lessons at per week basis within that one month at non-negociable terms as I understand things come up in life, and I don't want to take advantage of people's incidents. Plus, I don't believe in being greedy in general w/ people's hard earned money by dismissing their lessons. Typically w/ dance lessons, you have to use it up within 3 months or 6 months depending on the packages. There is always lead time. However, I knew of her overly strict policies before I committed, yet I did not predict a vocal loss can ever happen, that was out of my control. So my little sister would sing all the time (super loud) and I could tell she had something there but it wasn't there yet. So for the sake of my eardrums I quickly went on yelp and found Jane. I saw she had great reviews so we tried her out. My sister and I have been taking voice lessons from Jane for 9 months now and she is amazing! Earlier this year, I started writing and recording my first solo album. I was by no means a seasoned singer. In fact, I was very shy about singing in front of people and lacked confidence in my vocal abilities. A few studio sessions in, I decided I desperately needed the help of a vocal coach. Every lesson with her has been valuable. What would normally take months to learn through other coaches, Jane is able to teach me in a few lessons. She just has a knack for pinpointing what has to be improved in order to get a fuller, stronger sound (breathing, pronunciation, mouth shape, abdominal control). She pays attention to the details and takes the time to figure out which techniques work best. Jane has also been very encouraging as my singing career develops. WOW. The reviews are every bit as true as I'd hoped. She is phenomenal. Knows her stuff and articulates things in a way you can understand and get the improvements you're looking for. Such a fine tuned ear, she is really able to pin point what you can tweak to be your best. She is soooo good in fact, that she is difficult to book an apt. with, but it's worth the wait. I had a performance I was preparing for and she was able to get me in on a standby basis. My previous lessons were good but I had kinda stopped growing. They were $25 a lesson cheaper though, so for beginning they were good. Now though, I am very happy to pay the $80 per hour with Jane because she's worth it!!! I started working with Jane in the Bay Area in 2005 and was so happy to re-find her in LA a couple of years ago. She is the most effective voice teacher I have ever encountered. Her method is extremely holistic. I am a Feldenkrais practicioner and find her whole body approach to singing to be totally compatible with my bodywork and bodywork philosophies around using the whole self with ease. She has me start on the floor to help trigger the most efficient airflow and support and then gradually brings me to standing and to working on melody. Although I only worked with Jane for a few months, I have no reservations about recommending her as a teacher. She was patient, thoughtful, resourceful, and most importantly, effective. As a non-traditional performer, my needs were varied (more breath control, better tone, wider range, more confidence, more vocal creativity) and Jane found creative and helpful ways to address them all. We began with breathing exercises which involved using 'scuba weights' to strengthen the muscle groups associated with vocalizing. I also spent a fair amount of time doing breathwork on the floor; the real gift was how holistic the work was; we started with the structural work that makes strong vocal performance possible, and moved up to more specific goals like working on songs. As homework, Jane gave me songs to work on, as well as breathing exercises to do, which were simple and effective. I found myself practicing all the time-- while walking around, on public transit, and at home. After only a few weeks, I could already feel the difference, not only in my singing voice, but my speaking voice, and even in my breath and how I stood, walked, and conversed in daily life. Unfortunately, I ended up relocating, and couldn't continue my lessons with Jane, but I am still reaping the benefits of our short time together. When I came to Jane, I had a little training back home in MO but it had been years since I'd taken lessons. I wanted the lessons to train for an upcoming audition. We went through exercises, I took them home and practiced twice a week. I trained for two months and my voice sort of...unlocked. A sound came out that I'd never heard. It was mature, strong and consistent. I continued to practice and I continue still to improve. My chest voice range has expanded as well as my upper range. Also, my ability to breathe between quick phrases in difficult pieces has significantly improved. Let me paint the picture of how this vocal lesson went... I took a chance and bought the intro lesson for $50 on her website. She gave me a DETAILED email about her new location in Atwater, a picture of her studio, where to park, what to wear (she has specific teaching methods), and the like. Her professionalism is honestly so refreshing. I found her studio easily because of her directions. I went inside and found a spacious, minimalistic studio. She asked me what I wanted to accomplish through vocal lessons (which was a stronger higher register and breath control) and as we went through the vocal exercises, I could tell that she was focusing on these specific areas. Her highly trained ear is no joke. She heard specific strengths and weaknesses in my voice, and gave me the guidance to hear them as well. I went to Jane with no singing experience and just wanting to learn for fun and to not sound so bad while singing in the car! Jane was extremely encouraging and helped me to be less self conscious about my voice and in a few short sessions I felt a big improvement in just understanding the fundamentals of singing. Given I only took lessons for a few months and had no experience before I knew that I wouldn't leave sounding amazing, but Jane provided me with great tips and knowledge to continue improving my voice on my own before I can save up some more money for lessons. We worked on exercises as well as some songs Jane picked and then after a couple months I would be able to choose my own song to work on, which is the fun part! Jane is very nice and listens to what you have to say and adjust to your personal skills and ability. I left actually feeling like I may perform one day for fun and with more confidence in my voice. One warning to new singers is that it is important to take care of your voice and throat as I had a few soar throats while singing and did loose my voice once. Granted I also went to a LA King game and celebrated my birthday that week so I think that had more to do with it, but none the less singing is straining on your voice so be careful. When loosing my voice Jane was more than accommodating in letting me push back my lesson a week even though it was past the expiration policy she has for makeup classes. As far as my singing background, I had a couple years of musical theater training in a conservatory style setting. Since then, I developed many fear-based blocks. I found out about Jane through the powers of Yelp, and I am so happy I did. I had about 6 lessons with her before I had to move out of state, and I have to say, those were the 6 most effective, most productive voice lessons I've ever had in my entire life. During our first lesson, Jane was able to immediately pinpoint certain aspects of my singing style that could use improvement (i.e. mouth shape, breath control, etc). In this aspect, Jane is great at refining your singing technique and helping you achieve greater sound most efficiently. Her approach to singing is unique and clearly very cultivated. Through the use of abdominal weights and hand weights, Jane encourages you to use your whole body to sing, which makes sense since good, stylized singing really takes a lot of ab and diaphragm control. I had never had this type of training before and I could see/hear improvement instantly. Jane herself is an extremely encouraging and thoughtful person. She is always positive and cheerful, and I could tell that she really wanted to help me. She would always ask me how I'm feeling about certain techniques and whether there is anything in particular I would want to focus on. I needed some coaching to improve my range and sustain my voice for a single performance. Jane is fantastic. She has a thorough understanding of the classical technique, having been classically trained herself. She also knows several unconventional techniques to help you get the sound you want. What's best is Jane's attitude toward helping you learn: she is patient, enthusiastic, and encouraging. She really puts in the effort to help you grow; sometimes when I wasn't getting something right, she would demonstrate the technique herself, or think up creative exercises for me to do. You can come from singing any genre of music and learn from Jane. My voice became a lot more resonant and fluid after taking her lessons. I was also really struggling with my vibrato, and Jane is the first teacher I've ever had who's successfully helped me make my vibrato happen. When I sang my songs for her, she gave me really great pieces of advice. She pointed out things I could improve that really made a big difference. All-in-all, Jane is superb. I've been taking lessons with Jane for a while now, and in all honesty, I couldn't be any happier. For starters, I am a inexperienced starting singer. My goal is to get my voice to a professional level, so I can try to make a career in music. Jane is completely understanding, and works with you in all areas of improvement. The lessons are tailored based on your voice, so you're not wasting your time doing exercises that you don't necessarily need to do. She keeps notes on everything, including your lowest and highest note. The lessons are very fun, you spend half of the lesson working on specific exercises that she recommends you to do. After, she (in detail) breaks apart a song you want to work on and you apply the warm ups you just did to the song of your choice. She is super friendly and encouraging - not to mention, she offers you (very delicious) tea and water at every lesson. The only downside to working with Jane is that the hour lessons tend to go by quickly, which is a huge disappointment because it's what I look forward to most every week. Since working with her, my range has grown tremendously. My lowest note so far is a G2, and my highest is not too far from a D6 (which is our goal to get). If you're thinking about getting lessons, but aren't sure in which direction to go for, definitely give Jane a chance. She will be completely honest with you in your introductory lesson, and isn't in it for the money. read more

Jane is a great teacher for multiple reasons: 1. She is able to provide constructive criticism -she knows how to point improvement areas without making you feel bad. If she identifies an opportunity for improvement, she'll give you some specific exercises to help you with the issue you're dealing with (and not all teachers do that) 2. She's a classically trained singer with years of experience, and she knows how to transmit her knowledge in ways that can be applied to different genres of singing -breathing and support, mouth positioning, core-strengthening exercises... 3. She's very professional and organized -she keeps notes on each student, e.g. what's the highest note you'd reached in head and chest voice, what improvement areas were identified, which exercises helped you... This allows her to tailor her approach and work on what matters for you as opposed to applying a standard formula to every student 4. She's generous of her time and energy -I'm working on some music-related projects outside of the class and she helped point me in the right direction and provide me with some contacts to keep things going forward. I began working with Jane a little over a year ago. I had always sung as a young girl, always was involved in acting and singing. I had wanted to find an instructor who could help my voice be in the best state. Jane did exactly that. She educated me about the mouth shape, breathing, and how to relax when singing, and maintain hydration. Jane is an amazing instructor. This has turned out to be one of the best vocal lessons I have ever had and I feel confident that if I continue to practice her methods, I will continue to improve vocally. She really focuses on strengthening your vocals the way you would an instrument. Lots of scale exercises and a few other unconventional methods like using weights around the waist while singing. I'm a stronger, more confident singer thanks to her classes. She truly helped me identify my weaknesses so we could work on strengthening them, like my breathing techniques. I was only able to have a handful of lessons with Jane before I go back to school but boy did she help open my voice up. Her studio is super cute and she always has water or tea available for you and even helps out with parking. She really knows how to care for her students and is very professional. With my lessons she really helped broaden my range and introduced me to genres of singing that I would have never tried. With just the handful of lessons I feel so much more comfortable with my voice. She really works with you until you understand and can do the exercises. I have known Jane for 6 years and was always amazed by her beautiful voice. This was the first year that she gave my daughter (9 yrs) singing lessons. Since this was the first time my daughter had singing lessons, she was a bit nervous. Jane not only quickly calmed every nerve but had my daughter singing beautifully (and loudly) in minutes. Jane is excellent in working with children and taught my daughter many wonderful singing techniques. She also recorded all of the sessions we can go back and listen to the lesson for reference.
