In my personal opinion, I felt the cost for the lessons were a bit high compared to the other classes I've tried in the past but I hoped with the recommendation and reviews I would be paying more for better coaching. In the past I've taken classes as low as half of what Brain charged but I felt no improvements from those lessons. I'm now going a little over 2 months being coached by Brian and have noticed much improvements and an better understanding of my vocal/singing. In conclusion if your looking to improve your voice/singing, Brain is the person to reach out to. Pay for something that will give you results, no matter how cheap the other lessons might be, would be wasted if there is no improvement right? I studied voice "old school" and thought that was it. Brian's "current school" methods go beyond--way beyond. My vocal range increased within a couple of weeks but more importantly the strength of my voice which in turn has tremendously increased my confidence. As a singer that loves to sing in heavier styles, Brian is the only vocal instructor that has been able to guide me in the right direction without compromising my sound. I was unsure about trying out for The Voice/America's Got Talent, but he really built my confidence by helping me out with the technical and physics aspect of singing in general. Words can't fathom what an amazing teacher, vocal coach, and person Brian is, but I'm going to give it a shot! I have no singing experience (other than sounding like a dying cat at karaoke), trauma from when I was a kid (forced to sing in front of a crowd with no preparation and being laughed at for a good solid 7 months), and overall just having a not so confident personality. But I love music and I love to sing. Being immune compromised, I didn't want to live a life full of regrets and a bucket list unchecked, so I decided to invest and take vocal lessons before COVID had a chance to get me. Of course I was hesitant due to many reasons and it took me 4 months of research before I found and contacted Brian. My main priorities were to make sure that the instructor I went with was able to teach me to sing in a safe way but also knew that practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. I'm a kinesthetic and visual learner so singing was definitely a challenge since everything was now virtual. BUT YOU GUYS. I don't think it would've made a difference if the lessons were in person or virtually because regardless, Brian is so good at what he does, he makes it work. There are good teachers and there are great; Brian is great. Brian--like us--loves singing but didn't have a strong voice to begin. He started taking lessons when he was 17. My theory is that because he started when he was older, he knows how to articulate the technique needed to improve the quality of the voice. By the end of the first lesson, my daughter (16) and I witnessed immediate improvement in our voices: amazing. We knew Brian was special, so I brought two other members of our family to him. My son (14) didn't like singing--rarely sang--but now loves it. And my tone-deaf husband even took lessons--mostly to enhance the richness of his speaking voice. He can carry a tune now. read more

Brian has a very complete understanding of how the human voice works and with his direction, he's set me on the correct path to building my voice. He doesn't have you make weird noises without giving you an anatomical reason for why you're doing it. He explains what that noise is enabling you to do which gives you something physical to pay attention to as you're trying to adjust your mouth in all the relevant places to create the sound you're going for. It's like if you're learning an instrument and he teaches you all the finger positions on it to play each note. This is the complete opposite of how I've seen teachers typically try to teach singing. I come from having no real experience in singing. I tried a few lessons years ago with a teacher who took a very classical approach and I understand it's unreasonable to try to see results after like 5 lessons, but what I remembered from those lessons is very abstract ideas to hopefully get me to produce the correct sounds. Stuff like being told to put the note in my chest and push it up or being told that I should loosen up or saying whoo while pointing into the air as if they're guiding the note out of my body or being told that I'm grabbing while trying to sing higher pitches. What was I trying to grab? I don't know. There were a lot of these types of rituals and I feel like I was being sold snake oil. These kinds of abstract instructions are used in place of actual science and come from the same paradigm as bloodletting and ice pick lobotomies. It's as if classical style teachers' curriculums are based on metaphors that try to describe the mechanics of the voice and a students compatibility with a teacher is if they vibe with those metaphors. Brian however is a man of science and his approach made me understand exactly what was causing my shortcomings. He starts you off with making weird noises too, but that's just used as a learning tool for beginners. Once you fully understand his explanations and study the sounds and the mechanics involved from his lessons, he starts treating you like an adult and gives you directions in terms of muscle movements and not abstract noise making that other teachers would base their entire curriculum on. It's almost like a prerequisite for his lessons is an anatomy class, but if you didn't come prepared like me, he gives very easy to understand explanations of everything you need to know. He has a very sensitive ear and it's obvious he's heard many people's voices and can instantly identify why you're making sounds the way you are because of his years of experience. He has the solutions to the problems with your voice and can give you instructions on how to clean up your sound and work your way up to your goals. I've been trained classically to play instruments so I was coming into this expecting to do the same thing. Work on stuff I don't actually want to play for months to build up to what I actually want to do. I was pleasantly surprised that wasn't necessary since my goal is more pop, rock, and r&b, which are the styles that Brian himself is into. His teaching methods focus on getting you to where you want to be as fast as possible without ignoring the fundamentals. It's like he has the fundamentals for the voice that are absolutely nonnegotiable for everyone then builds a unique experience for each student on top of them. His rates are higher than what you might see against other teachers who might even charge $50 for a whole hour, but you will probably end up spending the same amount of money but way more time to get to the point Brian can get you within a couple lessons. Some things are worth paying extra for and correct information from a guy who's pretty laid back is one of them. I'm not wasting time trying to decipher vague and abstract notes from my lessons, it's clear to me after every lesson why I'm struggling and what I need to do to improve. The only shortcomings at this point are the current physical limits of my voice and I will continue with Brian to push those limits to where I want to be. I'm very lucky to have found a teacher who cares about complete comprehension like I do. You can keep asking him "but why" and he'll be able to explain it down to the atom. read more

I had been suffering from chronic, recurrent sore throat and voice hoarseness that made it difficult for me to even have conversations with people. It had gotten so bad that at one point, I could barely speak above a whisper for more than a few sentences at a time. I realized I needed a vocal coach to help me learn how to phonate properly. My wife found Brian's coaching program and referred me to him. Within my first coaching session with Brian, my voice was already sounding better, because I learned within my first session how to recruit different sets of muscles involved in formulating different parts of my voice. This allowed me to redistribute the workload away from the vocal muscles that I had previously been overusing. I've now been training with Brian for about 2 months and my sore throat issues have almost completely resolved. I even recently got a cold, but it didn't cause my voice to become hoarse like it used to in the past, since I'm now utilizing a wider range of vocal muscles to speak. And because the coaching sessions involve singing, which gives me the opportunity to practice how to properly recruit the different vocal muscles for different notes, I've gone from barely being able to talk, to now being able to decently sing different genres of music, which for me is a dramatic improvement. Brian demonstrates an extensive knowledge of not only how to effectively coach people in maximizing the utilization of their voice, but also has an impressive and intricate understanding of the muscular anatomy that is involved in vocalization. Brian is an extremely kind, competent, and personable vocal teacher and I'm SO glad I had the opportunity to learn from him as my first voice teacher. As someone who had grown up primarily singing church choir, I enjoyed singing, but wanted to feel more confident in my ability to develop my voice properly with professional help. My goal with voice lessons was to be able to understand my voice better, sing with better technique, and gain more confidence with singing around other people. I can't say enough good things about my experience with Brian. I've been singing for over 10 years without a hint formal training. I've always just tried to copy my favorite artists and, more recently, looked through YouTube coaching videos. I picked up a few good things from those videos, but I felt I wasn't really getting to where I wanted to be, so I went online and looked for a coach. I was hesitant about getting lessons because of cost and there's no guarantee they'd work. On top of that, I decided to get coaching right as the COVID pandemic hit. As the rest of the previous reviews mentioned, Brian does a great job at explaining how the body works as a musical instrument and that he recommends you to bring a song that you know well but somewhat difficult to sing and 2GB of free space on your phone for recording. However, the one thing that I blew my mind is that the recording is actually to record his lessons with you so that you can go back and review if you choose to do so. The guy straight out told me to pull my phone out and to attach it to his tripod for better sound recording. You get to record as he goes into full science mode on the breakout of how the sound is produced and how the body works. Not to mention sharing of videos and anatomy diagrams to drive the point even further. This is part 1 of the lesson. He lets you know when to stop the recording and when to start recording part 2, which is the practicing and application of the lesson, for easier review and to go over and practice as homework. Never have I met a professional or a teacher that encourages and pushes for voice recording of the lesson which speaks volume for his character as a teacher as one that cares about the development and growth of his students. In addition to just being a cool, likeable guy, Brian is a perfect teacher. I do not give such a high compliment willy-nilly. I used to take voice lessons a long time ago, and I never felt I was improving. The exercises seemed cut and paste. Another teacher I had more recently was a bit... insulting and critical. Lessons with Brian are not like that at all. They are tailored to you, and he helps you grow while simultaneously being encouraging. It is a wonderful blend. I was a terrible student in school, and I appreciate a teacher like him who can adjust his teaching style and explanations for all types of learners. Brian is the perfect teacher for me and I'd guess for almost anyone: he can zero in on your voice immediately, assess your strengths and weaknesses, and pinpoint exactly what can help you grow, while at the same time giving succinct but thought-provoking overviews of the vocal instrument, both in it's mechanics (musculature, organization) and physics, in a way that helps you understand clearly exactly what you need to do and why you might be having issues. Personally he's also very straightforward, neither too easy-going nor too stringent. The lessons go all the way from general to laser-focused in on your and your voice. I must admit that I thought I might not be able to afford more than a lesson or two, but given how much I've been learning and how I can see such a difference immediately I've done three already and plan to do many more. Every lesson builds on the last in tangible ways. Brian is THE vocal teacher, words aren't enough to show how great he is as a person and mentor. He is so knowledgeable and is a master at his craft. I have the ugliest baritone voice and I am a beginner singer. However, I love singing and appreciate music. I took vocal lessons from Brian on-and-off for about two years (Feb 2020 to Mar 2022). I would have taken them more consistently throughout the years if it wasn't for my inconsistent work schedule, and I would take lessons still if it wasn't for a new move and house purchase. At any rate, Brian was AMAZING to work with and very patient and understanding of my goals and in trying to help me reach them. He was accommodating when we did lessons via Skype AND in different time zones since I was living in Japan for a large portion of our lessons. He was still as attentive online as when I had lessons in-person! What I appreciated most about Brian was that he truly cares about his students and tailored his lessons to ensure we (I) got the most out of each class. Even when I kept pushing to try to sing early on, he reiterated his course structure and emphasized to me why building a strong foundation and understanding of the mouth/throat/vocal chords are more important early-on than to immediately jumped into singing a song. I soon appreciated and am grateful to Brian for stressing that foundational build-up since it helped me later on when we progressed to more challenging warm-ups, scales, and intermediate songs. If you're serious about learning how to sing like a professional, do yourself a favor and choose Brian Lin! There are some things about singing and performance that can't be taught. But what CAN be taught--Brian teaches it best. I used to think there were certain vocal techniques that I would never be able to pull off. After a long break from active singing, I was having a hard time with rhythm and wanted other general improvements in pitch and range.
