Brew House is no longer serving food. So sad. It was my go - to spot for a burger for years.

Dive bar, but an awesome one, this was our first stop on black Wednesday, and it didn't disappoint. They had a great selection of local beers, classic beers, and cocktails. We just kept it low key with some pbrs and relaxed and caught up. I definitely get the impression that there are regulars here which is great because they are super friendly and made us feel right at home while they celebrated a birthday. Sometimes, you just want a spot to have a brew or two while your lady gets her hair did. I was in said situation recently, searching for a proverbial watering hole while my lady was at Parlour, when I found this spot thanks to Yelp. Good place for brews? Absolutely! The place has the quintessential feel of a local neighborhood bar and grill, which I always like. They adhered to all the COVID safety protocols for sure. The bartender was super friendly and told me to sit anywhere. I usually like a bar seat, but they weren't allowing bar seating to be safe, which is understandable. Their beer selection wasn't huge but still impressive with great local and regional craft beers. I started with Left Hand peanut butter milk stout on draft, and later, had a can of 50 West Oh You Oh Yeah coffee stout. They also have a pretty big food menu, featuring all sorts of goodies, but I was just there for the brews this visit. Though I have a feeling I'll be back again to try their tacos. Also, if you want a few brews to go, you can take 'em with you. Definitely a great little beer spot and more. When I go for the food, I'll have to add more to this review. read more

What a nice surprise. I went in with low expectations because I though this was just a bar and I'd get typical bar fare. Boy-was-I-wrong! I ordered a burger and it stands up to some of the best places I've had burgers in Cincinnati. Nothing bad to say. I really enjoyed it. Pretty much your everyday run-of-the-mill bar-type place. You know, it's a rectangular shaped room with a bar all along one of the long sides. If you stand at the bar, they will come and take your order. They seem like friendly people. It seems to me to just be a place where folks like to casually hang out and have a drink, but seemingly every time I come here they are half-heartedly attempting to shoehorn a live performance into some odd corner or forgotten back room where some poor schlep must excuse his way into just to get some needed work supplies out of a now conspicuous closet space. I can't blame them for trying to make an extra buck, but I don't think they've fully fleshed out how to hold a live show with their current setup. No real complaints though. I live near Brew House and have driven or walked past it so many times but don't often crave "bar food" so I've generally ignored it until recently. Once, when famished from hours of doing landscape work, entered their doors looking for nourishment in the form of a good burger and unlimited iced tea. I wasn't disappointed. I've been coming in ever since. The food here is quite good - my only wish is that it were consistent. Sometimes, you get the most incredible beer battered, double cooked fries that are full of flavor and the perfect texture (extra crispy outside, fluffy soft inside). Other times, you get a semi-soggy regular french fry that tastes mostly of undercooked potato, as if they shared the same supplier as Wendy's (same color too). There's no rhyme or reason as to why you get one fry or the other, it like a scratch-it ticket: sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It doesn't cost much but it either brings great delight, or a slight let down. The salads are surprisingly fresh with lots of good stuff (especially the chef salad) and served with a pretty health portion, too. The fish & chips are amazing - the fish is perfectly flaky and crispy - especially if you get the good fries. But the real star of the show is the burger. Here's the deal: whatever special burger they have on the board, GET THAT BURGER. The specials are always the best value - you get more stuff, it's tastier and more interesting, and it comes with fries (hopefully the good ones). All of the servers here are super nice. Like salt of the earth, good people nice. The place has a wonderful charm about it - it's full of regulars and there's no pretense at all. It is the perfect neighborhood spot. read more

Brew House is a kitschy little neighborhood dive with home cooked food. Fun fact: They have over 100 different beers here! We stopped in and asked what they were known for, the bartender recommended the burger. What came out was a burger you would make a home. It was fine, and did the job but in my opinion was not a contender in the Cincinnati burger game. HOWEVER everyone in the place seemed to be ordering the fish n' chips which looked fantastic. If we go back I will definitely hit that up. We also got an order of the peirogies and they were solid. Not the best I've ever had but again, did the trick. Overall I would give the food 3-stars. But the bartender was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was very memorable and they had live music on Tuesday which made for a fun night so I am bumping up to 4-stars. I don't say this often, but I feel like nearly everyone should experience Brew House - it is anything but boring/typical. I don't review every restaurant I visit, but within a few minutes of stepping through the doors I knew that I have to share this experience. My wife recently discovered the "Impossible Burger", which admittedly tastes almost exactly like beef, but is not. Through a little research I discovered that several restaurants in the tri-state area offer this burger - one being Brew House. This last Friday we were starved, and my wife was craving an Impossible Burger. I didn't read any of the reviews on Brew House, but saw the 4/5 star Yelp rating, knew they offered the burger, and assumed (oh boy) that Brew House would be the kind of trendy, slightly upscale, restaurant you'd find in OTR. I. Was. Wrong. So very wrong. Within one block of Brew House, we noticed some unsavory looking characters who appeared to be up to no good. Saw one guy pushing a shopping cart that was filled with cans. The side of the street we were on had trash everywhere - have I painted a picture of this Walnut Hills neighborhood? While most Brew House patrons are likely safe, it goes without saying, this is a sketchy area. It was a little difficult finding a parking spot in the private lot even at this early hour of about 5:30 p.m. Once inside, I realized that my assumptions were incorrect, and I had just entered the doors of a dive bar. When you walk in there is no sign telling you to seat yourself, or wait to be seated. There was also no one to greet you and tell you what to do. We seat ourselves and a couple of minutes later were "kind of" greeted by our waitress, Amy. It was quickly apparent that she was not your typical waitress. We ask for a couple of waters, and about ten minutes later I think she realized she had forgotten about us. After receiving our drinks we are ready to order. My wife goes with sweet potato fries and an Impossible Burger. I try the fish and chips (beer battered cod) and, to be a weirdo, also try a BBQ chicken taco. I asked what comes on the taco and am told "whatever you want". I said I would just go with BBQ chicken and cheese. Our food comes out at about the fifteen minute mark and the taco has lettuce on it, as well as the chicken and cheese. The taco goes back for remake and is not to be seen again for another 15 minutes. I start to eat my fish and realize we didn't have silverware. This is quickly addressed and the verdicts are in: my wife's sweet potato fries and Impossible Burger are good - damn good. My wife said the burger was an 8/10. My three large pieces of fish are delicate inside and are fried perfectly. Thankfully the beer batter was not overwhelming, which I appreciated. The fish could really have used some lemon, but for some reason was not served with it. My fries were about average - just your normal frozen fries you'd get anywhere, but weren't bad. My BBQ chicken taco finally makes an appearance sans lettuce, and is not good. It was actually embarrassingly bad. The BBQ sauce did not taste like BBQ at all, but rather tasted like some kind of unidentified red sauce. The chicken appeared to be boiled, cubed, and then the BBQish sauce was added immediately prior to serving. I would pull this item from the menu, or completely revamp the recipe. Upon taking my first bite, I heard the tacos from Bakersfield say "what the hell are you doing?". The food was mostly very good, but the real star of the show was the atmosphere, diversity, and uniqueness of Brew House - a few examples: -Lots of classic rock and alternative music playing just loud enough that you could enjoy it, but could still have a conversation. -A 50ish lady at the bar who probably had one glass of wine too many, was dancing in her seat, and was laughing nearly uncontrollably at times. -People coming in and hugging people at the bar that they knew by name. -Lots of playful banter with the bartender, but unfortunately some F-Bombs being dropped by said bartender with little kids in the restaurant. -A very interesting mix of Brew House patrons. A group of older women who could have been teachers at nearby Saint Ursula. A group of trouble-maker looking twenty somethings. A women sat behind us, by herself, and was likely approaching 90 years of age. -Our waitress stopped by a couple of times and instead of sharing typical waitressy type questions/comments instead talked about whatever song was currently playing. I actually really appreciated having a waitress who was authentic and was just being herself - very refreshing. -Star Wars artwork adorns the walls, nearly everywhere, and is for sale. Some, of which, was very good and very expensive. Price was about $32, which wasn't bad. Brew House is quite an experience. If you are looking for an out of the norm meal, Brew House will not let you down. Will return. read more

Truly an unexpected gem! Came here for a late-night bite with a friend who was also a Brew House newb. Upon entering, I could tell this was a neighborhood fave. It was quiet and yet jumpin at the same time. There's no formal hostess, you just come in and sit where you want. The bartenders double as servers and I was quickly brought a menu. They have a pretty solid menu that goes beyond greasy bar food, but I opted for the day's special which was basically a bacon cheeseburger and fries. My friend and I were so caught up talking that we didn't notice it had taken a while for our food the come out. The bartender ended up alerting us with an apology and offer to take care of our dinner since we had to wait so long. Talk about fantastic customer service! Burgers came out shortly after and they were freakin awesome! Nothing fancy, and yet we probably each mentioned how good everything was 3-4 times while stuffing out faces. Not only is the food good, the service impeccable, but the atmosphere is nice and casual. I will definitely be adding this to my list of bars when I want to have a chill, no frills evening. I like dive bars and this is just that with a restaurant to boot. Here's what made it cool: 1. Parking: the area has been sketchy for years but there's new development up and down the road from the Brew House. Parking is right next to the building. So, you don't have to worry about walking for blocks in a "still scary" part of town. 2. It's divey. It's not pristine. There's all kinds of "artwork" on the walls (i.e., framed postit note sketches...okaaay?). The tables and chairs are jinky and the bar is old. The bathroom has old fixtures but is clean. 3. Menu is burgers, sandwiches, tacos, salads, fries, etc. They have a "special" paper menu. Potpie was on it...it was an actual "slice" of pot pie. Beer selection is fairly big and there's something for everyone. My friend got pumpkin cider. I got the gavel banger. 4. The music. OMG! They played 80's alternative which we loved! It was like being back at Tapp's or Ripley's bar in Clifton (back in the day). We will go back just for the music. 5. Our table sat 3 up front by the corner window. We had sone privacy from the rest of the patrons which included a mom and autistic adult son, people who were grabhing a bite after work, a group of young guys, older couples, older single woman, and others. I'm giving it 4 stars because it is a dive like I remember from to 80's and early 90's before all the stainless, sanitary, cookie-cutter places started cluttering the suburbs and residential areas in the city. i think Brew House is just great. The food is reliable and affordable. I almost always order the pierogis, which come in a personal or family size with bacon and sour cream. I have had a burger here which was pretty standard and last night I enjoyed some tacos - the potato and guacamole and the blackened talapia. I'd definitely get the blackened talapia again. Beers are $6 for a pint, but that is pretty standard. Not a huge selection of beers on taps, but they keep their bottles and cans well stocked with a wider variety. The environment is pretty homey and it certainly looks and plays the part of a local watering house; lived in booths, wood paneling. Very comfortable setting, no pretension. It's also great because there is not television; so you have to speak to one another and perhaps even to a stranger. What a thought! Service is also great, very friendly bartenders and waitresses and quick service with food. They have a patio space that opens onto their parking lot, good for an afternoon lunch. read more

Good place in Cincy for burgers and beers. I'm a TX native and was impressed to see some Latin and South American influences on the menu with chicharrones (Mexican pork rinds) and pao de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread). Tried the chicharrones and was pleased with those though the salsa on the taco burger wasn't great - still good, just not great. Beer selection was good as others have noted and the food is solid. All around a good place for your neighborhood tavern with a few non-traditional items. I'll be back for sure. read more

I used to hit this place up for lunch when I worked a few blocks away but I haven't been here in some time and I've never been for dinner. The bar was hopping, with regular customers bantering back and forth with each other and the staff. Still, it felt welcoming, the way a neighborhood place should. I had the Cameron burger, which is huge, and substituted Swiss cheese. It's juicy, hot, and filling and the fries are the right size, too. I appreciate the copious amounts of napkins on the table and the ketchup being present without needing to be requested. Our server was getting ready to leave (I overheard her coworker offer to take her tables but she stayed a little late) and so I think we might have gotten neglected a bit in terms of refills and I did have to ask for the check. My friend had never been and definitely said he'd come back. I know I will and next time I'll maybe get the Black and Bleu Burger that I used to enjoy so much. read more

For a dive bar/restaurant this place had good food. You could tell their burgers were fresh and not frozen. Prices were very reasonable, but they could have a better selection of beers on draft. This is a total local place and is a great low key bar with good bar food. Their sweet potato fries were paired with an apple butter, which was a nice pairing. Our first time at the Brew House. Service was very good but most of the food was just ok. The wife had the broccoli cheese soup and said it was excellent. I had the French dip panini and it was just ok. The Au Jus was really bland and the beef looked and tasted like sliced deli meat. It came with chips but they were out of a bag. Brew House was recommended to us by a friend (I had never heard of it) so we tried it for the first time today for lunch. We were greeted by Tina who also took care of our table and she was fantastic - super friendly, helpful and welcoming! I ordered the Before the Butcher Burger (vegetarian) and onion rings. My hubby had the day's special which was the tilapia with curried rice and salad. Being a vegetarian I am super picky about my non-meat burgers. The Before the Butcher Burger did not disappoint! It was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly. Onion rings were crispy and light. Hubby said the fish and rice were equally tasty. We were both very happy with our food and the overall experience and we will definitely go back soon. Menu prices were reasonable and portions were adequate. I was so excited to give this place a try. I was prepared for the greasy spoon dive bar type of atmosphere, but I was not prepared for the lackluster meal we had. It wasn't disgusting, just very meh. I've had much better burgers. I ordered the Tally Ho burger and the beer battered bacon. My mouth was watering for that bacon! But alas, while the concept was great, the execution left much to be desired. The batter was really thick and clumpy and pretty greasy tasting and not in a good way but in a "let's deep fry this in old grease" kind of way. My husband had the Cameron burger and he said he's had better burgers from fast food places. One thing that was great was the bartender. We didn't order any drinks, but we were very pleased at how he handled an unruly customer harassing the young women servers. We live pretty close but unfortunately we will not be returning to BrewHouse anytime soon. read more

Attempted to eat here. Table being cleared by hipster dude who did not greet us or give us any indication of how to order. Bartender/server on Monday during happy hour was running around like a madwoman to provide service to people at the bar and take food to tables. Hipster dude disappeared during this busy time. Owner? Manager? We seated ourselves in a booth and chatted for nearly 10 minutes. No greeting. No indication that we would be served. Woman still busting her butt with existing tables and bar service. Then we left and saw hipster dude outside on patio cheerfully smoking with friends. Next time TALK TO US! Tell us you are busy. Bring us water. If you are looking for a unique and quirky atmosphere...look no further! Brew House is located in East Walnut Hills and is brimming with personality. The drinks are reasonably priced with an assortment of local brews on tap. I haven't eaten here yet, but all the food I saw looked tasty. The menu reads like a standard bar menu. Lots of fried goodies. Brew House's decor is what really makes it shine. The front rooms walls are covered in quirky artwork and sayings. There is even a wall dedicated to cat art! If you find yourself in the area Brew House is definitely worth stopping by for a drink or two. The prices are more reasonable than many of the surrounding bars...and cat art! read more

My dude and I recently moved to Walnut Hills and have heard everything about this place from "Super awesome neighborhood dive bar" to "Super scary don't go there dive bar." Having lived the last several years in New Orleans, we know a thing or two (or 50) about dive bars, so we had to check it out. We ended up going here right before Trivia Night (every Monday, I think), which was a little awkward because I felt bad about taking up a table when we weren't really playing. It seems like it might be fun if you have a big group, though. Both of us got burgers. This was the only major food strike - we'd seen some great reviews of the burgers, but they were a little on the raw side for us (I tend to order mine medium, dude orders his medium-raw. His was pretty much rare-rare-rare). On the other hand, the apple crisp was delicious. And the fries that came with Dude's specialty burger were incredible. Really, really good. I don't know if they were beer battered or what, but very tasty. Brewhouse has several (but not a ton) of regional beers on draft. They also had a pretty good bottle list. Service was that appropriate dive bar/diner mix between no-frills and cozy-friendly. Also- free WiFi! I definitely think we'll check it out again, but next time I might go for the BLT or fish and chips. read more

Not the same place I used to hang out. I used to love The Brew House. I thought I would stop in last week since they made a showing at #37 in Cincinnati Magazine's 45 best burgers. Well here's the rub. After making that ranking they changed the name of the burger from the big jack to the Cameron. The price also changed from $6.50 to $11!!! If this were gas it would be called price gouging. At this point I really didn't want the big jack/Cameron anymore but I asked our hostess if it was worth the $11. Her response was you'll have to make that decision...wtf?! I'm not giving $11 for a burger that was just $6.50 2 weeks ago. At this point I was ready to get up and walk out. I ordered the chicken wings with a side of fries. What I received were chicken fingers overcooked with side of fries. The place that I used to love has now become the place that I would never step foot in again. So sad read more

Brew House has great burgers, and used to have a good menu, but the new owners have decided that the food they want on the menu is better than the popular menu items. Some of the most popular items are being phased out, on the premise that they "did not sell well". In reality, they are popular with customers, but not the new owners. All well and good (:-/ ), but there are other issues. We all understand that prices need to go up every so often, but, instead of raising them gradually, some menu items have gone up more than 50%. The "Big Jack" burger (voted one of the best burgers by Cincinnati Magazine, just this month) went from $6.50 to $11.00, and they changed the name. I stopped in the other day for lunch, and witnessed more than one table (more than two...) look at the menu, pay for their drinks, and leave. Oh the Brewhouse. Where to start. First off you would never know this place existed unless you had been there before. Situated on the corner of Park and East McMillan it doesn't jump out at you. I'll guess the exterior hasn't changed in 30 year, nor has the interior. Food here is decent. On par with any other pub food. Prices are reasonable and they always have a daily special on beer and a daily special on food. For a place that seems old and dingy they have a couple of computers to surf the web and if memory serves wifi. What makes this place fantastic (and why I've given it 4 stars) isn't really the food or the drink prices, but the location. About 3 stumbling blocks from University of Cincinnati's College of Applied Science on Victory Parkway, the Brewhouse is oh-so-convenient to walk over and have a good meal and a few pitchers of beer in between classes. In addition the owner is always there and friendly, as are the servers and bartenders. So if you are in the area give it a try, it won't blow your socks off but you'll be pleased and you'll be supporting a great local small business. read more

UPDATED: Been here twice: First time I got the Cajun-style grouper dinner with two sides (I picked cole slaw and baked potato from the sizable list). It was one of those meals I wished would never end -- delicious fish was meaty and nicely spicy; cole slaw and potato were flat-out fantastic. Nothing elaborate, just extremely well-prepared pub grub that's several cuts above average (and at a very reasonable price -- less than $9 for the entree). On my second trip, I opted for the daily burger special (check their website for each day's offering, although you can always pick your own extras from the long list of options). I got a classic -- grilled mushrooms and onions with swiss cheese. It was a great burger, cooked to order (medium) and served on a high-quality bun with potato chips and a few pickle slices. Easy parking, a full bar with some good bourbon options, a small selection of draft beers and a fridge full of wonderful craft brews made this place damn near irresistible. The warm and friendly service pushed it over the top. Can't wait to go back and try a burger (they have daily specials on their website, too). Highly recommended if you don't mind eating in an almost window-less bar while some hot R&B plays in the background. read more

I was a lunch time regular at the Brew House 20 years ago. While I did enjoy it then I was excited to see it come under new younger ownership. They have done a lot to update and improve on this once neighborhood dive. The place still has a selection of interesting locals sitting at the bar but the menu has been improved and the space is much better with new front windows that lighten the place up. The old windowless space used to feel like the type of place where you'd drink yourself to death. Now it has a hipsterish feel with cool decor and a small, but nice selection of craft beers on tap. Ive noticed a nice presence on social media posting a lot of cool events at the BH like trivia nights- so like them on FB. The owner Laura has been very involved in the new renaissance of Walnut Hills so I'm excited to see how the Brew House continues to grow. Check it out. read more

This place has new management and is going through a serious and much needed renovation. Wine selection is ok, beer selection is pretty great, and hello!!! The food is amazing. Sweet potato fries!!! All the time! That had me hooked. Also there are fun things in the menu...like "Fried Stuff" yep that is a menu item! I went tonight for the 1st & last time. I ordered Fish & chips to go. The fries were half done. When we bit into them the fries were still hard in the middle (uncooked). The fish wasn't well seasoned & the total was $19. For the cost..... it should be way better. My 16 year old son can cook better fries than the cook @ Brew House!! They give you 3 big pieces of fish, which is GREAT but, you only get one cup of tartar sauce for all that fishwon't be going back for the food. read more

Went here after work with friends for a couple beers and appetizers. Had no trouble getting parked in the lot. Inside is very retro. Staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. They had a decent draft beer selection, and good bottle choices too. The menu is limited, but solid. We shared nachos (everything came on the side except the meat and cheese, which I like, because I prefer to "build my own"), cheese sticks (okay), and wings (tiniest wings ever, but crisp and good wing sauce). This was a great little bar to hit after work and relax with co-workers. I don't live close enough for it to be *my* neighborhood bar, but if I did, it might just fit the bill. The atmosphere is interesting, a mid century pub feel. I'm a vegetarian and there are plenty of options on their menu that one can use to make a great veggie burger. Pierogies!!!! What?!?! Buffalo chicken dip! Both great! People don't even know what Pierogies are usually. Driving by this place I always have seen it packed, but going inside on A Friday happy hour, it was not. It's more of A diner feel and not a brewery type feel as I took the name to be. My narrow mind had decided what this place was all about before I even walked in the door. But my little brain had no idea what was in store. It's perfect. Everything that I want from a bar like this. Their beer selection is absolutely amazing and covers a way wider variety of beers than I had initially thought! The food--I had the fish and chips--was delicious. My friend had a burger which he really liked, and their menu made it pretty difficult to decide. The service was friendly and prompt with both servers apologizing for our party having to wait a few minutes longer than they thought we should've. The demographic seems to be a great blend of everyone. It was incredibly comfortable to be in the bar. We are going to try and do their trivia nights on Monday also now! read more
